  1. My firepit. About $150 of bricks and liner from Menards. Didn't glue so I can relocate if needed. Super easy.

  2. Looks fantastic. We actually put shiplap behind our vanity. We went with a single bowl vanity. That way when I kick off my young wife won't have to worry about the other bowl.

  3. That is awesome. I know the stress, thinking through how to do something. It's very rewarding in the end but very stressful. Here's my little shiplap wall. Just got the lights and mirror back on the wall and cleaned up.

  5. Mr. Spillman had a joke about toilet paper. Went something like this. Little old woman walks into to the store and asks what kind of toilet paper they have. Clerk says we have top shelf premium and is our most expensive, and we have our store brand which is ok and more affordable. Woman asks what's on the bottom shelf, clerk says that's our cheapest called John Wayne toilet paper, its rough and tough and doesnt take shit off anyone.

  6. I want to give a shout out and a huge thank you to our nation's truck drivers. Both long haul and local. They are keeping on keeping on. Without them our nation's supply chain would be completely broken. I have followed one long haul driver over You Tube for years. He's from Wisconsin. Basically delivers food (refrig trailer) all over the Eastern States. And said the other day that the DOT has shut down their electronic log books for now. Amazing in that the DOT is very strict in the numbers of hours a long haul driver is allowed to drive at one given time. Which means he can run any number of hours, he chooses which is safe. Before... the DOT required truckers to shut down periodically for extended breaks. No longer the case. In the event you know a trucker, man or lady that is continuing to keep on keeping on. Give them a shout out. And let them know our great nation appreciates what they do and are doing for us.

  14. I installed a pocket door to the bathroom in my last house 10+ years ago and last year put in in 3 barn doors in the basement I finished of the house we bought last summer. Love both of them. Barn doors are trendy. Got mine at Costco for $300 a piece. Might depend on the rest of your decor. If you can go rustic, use the barn door. I'd say they are easier as you don't have to open up the wall.

  15. Have to bring this thread back to life, especially for Mile lol. Share pictures, recipes, equipment, etc. Probably one of my favorite things to grill is my take on a Black & Blue Burger. I try to use 80/20 meat, but normally I’m forced with 90/10 because of the wife. Anyway, instead of putting the blue cheese crumbles on top, I mix it in the meat with the bacon bits and seasoning. For seasoning, I really like the Chicago Steak seasoning. Gives the blue cheese and bacon a really nice balance. For smoking, I love doing pork loin and chicken quarter thighs. I like doing my own brines and rubs. I plan on doing a lot more smoking this summer, very excited.

  21. I'm in the same boat. We shop at Costco so usually have a decent supply. With a house of 5 (daughter just returned from college) we go through food fast. Just exacerbated since we are all eating every meal at home. Its easy for a retired couple to stock up since they generally don't eat much. Not so much for bigger families. Wishing we still had the second fridge.

  23. we were in need of some serious groceries. Just getting back from vacation we did not have much and then having my college son move home and all of us being there all the time I had to go. The only place where I found most of what we needed was Aldi. I believe that every item was reduced which was a nice touch. A concern for many people is that we don't stockpile like our grandparents did and having the extra mouths there for all meals will cause a financial burden on many. Where we live many of the kids only get meals from the school which is so sad. OUr school like most are setting up areas to get meals to those families. My wife was asked to work it and get paid but the extra exposure is just not worth it. Thankfully we were able to get what we needed

  24. Yeah I haven't stepped foot in a large store this week. I mainly go to Dollar General or Walgreen's and while they have started getting hit on certain items, they still usually have what I am looking for without huge lines.

  29. OK so to dispel a couple things - banks, by law, cannot simply close. Each state has its own laws for banks and state-chartered credit unions, and those laws must be followed -- for example, in Texas there are regulations for a 3-day emergency closure of a branch or branches, with permission of the state banking commissioner. Your bank will not simply close. Regardless, most banking can be done on line. - life won't continue "as normal." The incredibly stupid, selfish, dimwitted, panicking dipshits will race to your grocery stores and buy up every pack of toilet paper and paper towel that can be found. However, while these stupid, mindless morons apparently haven't gotten the grasp of this yet, there is no shortage, whatsoever, of toilet paper or paper towels, nor will there be -- deliveries to most grocery stores come daily, first thing in the morning. So you can go line up with the idiots, if needed. However, you can often just bypass these freaking stupid cows, and just go to your local CVS - ask them when they get deliveries. This is what we did today, when every single grocery store was completely sold out and where lines, at 6:30 a.m., are 3-4 blocks long. CVS, right in our neighborhood, had plenty of toilet paper this morning. If there is one thing to learn from this virus, it's that the American public at large is a panicked collection of idiots. You can also try ordering off Amazon, etc. -- Amazon is back-ordered for toilet paper into mid-April. But it might make sense to order a couple (AS IN 2, NOT 10) packs of toilet paper in advance so you know it's on the way in. Or you can buy a bidet. But they're selling out. Lol.

  30. I texted the lady who cuts my hair to see if she could fit me in before shutting down, but she decided to shut down her shop early. I get my hair cut every two weeks. It’s going to be driving me nuts soon. I might have to buy my own clippers.

  33. Essential places will still be open, it really shouldn't be any different than what we have already been doing if we were smart. Hopefully the businesses adapt and limit the number of people in the store at one time or impose other guidelines.

  36. New York now has over half of US cases. I don't have to tell the government that containing it there is critical to beating it nationally. Now 157 deaths in New York. Nationally, the death rate sits at 1.19%. It's still comforting to see that 98% of US cases are considered mild.

  37. I read the article Saturday night then went to refresh the page Sunday morning and it was gone. In the comments, there was an epidemiologist who disagreed with the article . There was a long twitter thread by this person, but most of this person's complaints were ad hominem attacks towards the author. I have read other professionals agree with it. I liked the article and I thought he made some good points. I would really like to see data on cases per capita. The John's Hopkins map shows NYC as having 10,665 active cases. NYC's population is ~8.6 million. I would also like to have demographic data (age, Yes/No with pre-existing conditions, etc.) of every case. I keep seeing anecdotal stories, but no hard data. What I'm most excited about is the chloroquine trials that are starting in NYC tomorrow. I think is a real game changer and we should have some good data by the weekend. Here's an article where a Florida man was cured within a couple of days. https://nypost.com/2020/03/22/florida-man-with-coronavirus-says-drug-touted-by-trump-saved-his-life/

  38. Easiest and currently trendiest would be the barn door for sure. If you don't have an existing pocket in the wall in place you will have to tear out and install one. Hindsight I wish I would have had a 3rd put in a certain spot where I didnt have room for a barn door and now it's just a tight area around a tub.

  39. I'm charting various statistics. This far, the U.S. death rate is 1.3%. Italy is 9.26%...oy vey. Here, 2% of cases are serious or critical. In Italy, 6%. New York is going to be key...if we can get it under control there, I think that bodes well for the rest of the country.

  40. I'm officially obsessed with the subject and started tracking active cases globally on a spreadsheet, checking every few hours. Tonight, between 5:43 p.m. and 9:43 p.m., active cases actually dropped slightly. Probably just a reporting delay or glitch, but I'm going to watch the numbers closely since business has pretty much ground to a halt anyway.

  46. I just finish a complete bathroom remodel. The only thing that is original is a couple of walls of drywall. New lights, floor, ceiling, faucets, door and all trim, bath fan, complete tiled shower, vanity, floating shelving and towel and paper holder, robe hook and towel ring. We also put in two pantries and bench seating in the kitchen which allowed us to tear out a built in pantry that extended into the bathroom . Doing this allowed us to increase our vanity size from 42" to 60". It was much tougher than I thought and my patience was totally shot. Hopefully no more waking up in the middle of the night and thinking about what I have to do and how to do it. This is my last major project. I am too old (66) and Susan and I have done everything to this house. New windows, doors, cabinets, doors, trim, lights siding, garage door, floors and carpet. All this was done is less than 3 years Mission Accomplished!

  47. Once I got the house to 90% complete, I needed a change of pace and started a deck with a built in Trampoline for the Grand kids. I currently have this at 98% complete and started a privacy fence that looks like an old west town. I am great at starting projects.

  48. I'm a big fan of gardening. Actually ordered a bunch of seeds this morning, and probably going to start planting inside next week. I have a couple grow lights set up in my basement. At least I live in Illinois, so that isn't as suspicious anymore! I start in the little 1 inch pots that have 6 of them together. Get a handful of them in a large tray, so I can start 30-40 different seeds at a time. What I do is plant 3 seeds per cell, so about 100 seeds total. All kinds of different things. 4-5 kinds of tomatoes, a few different peppers, red cabbage, sauerkraut cabbage, broccoli, some herbs for early cuttings, and a few more things. If it is a seed that I need a lot of, when the plants are about 2 inches tall, I separate them into 4 inch pots. If I only need 1 or 2, I get rid of the worst looking ones. I give some plants to family and friends too, so I end up not throwing away many of the shoots. I set a fan up that blows on them at low speed to help give them stronger stems. A couple weeks before I'm planning on planting them outside, I start setting them outside. I grow them by my egress window in my basement, so it is easy to take them in and out each day. First for a couple hours, then for the whole day. I have a handful of things I only plant outside. Most herbs, lettuce, kale, peas, beans. There is definitely something fulfilling about growing plants from seeds and eating the final product. Looking forward to getting my garden going again this year!

  49. Avid gardener here. Let me start out by saying I am looking forward to my new toy...a 4-cycle Mantis tiller. And I still got my 2-cycle one as well. His and hers tillers. I pretty much just grow the usual. Tomatoes, green peppers, jalapenos, green beans, peas, onions, and cucumbers. Early I will put out radishes and kohl-rabi(sp?). Sweet corn grows great here but I can't keep the 'coons out of it.
