  2. This where I think you and I (and a couple of others) run off the rails. To me, there is no "narrative." I, personally, want to inch forward on this pandemic and get people's lives back to normal. I think I said this earlier in this thread, but posting positive, or any information for that matter, is not, or at least shouldn't be, part of any "narrative." From what I know about you, you and I seem to be somewhat insulated from all this, but many aren't. People are losing their livelihoods over this. Mental health and addiction issues may eventually outweigh everything except the final mortality rate here. I'm not going to speak for anyone else, but when I see or share a shred of good news on this crappy situation, it lets me know there is hope. It makes me believe that we're getting there. That, hopefully, the end to this nightmare is closer. I'll be the first to admit, I am very fortunate in the fact I don't have to sweat money, and my job is good til the day I call it quits. But I know plenty who aren't in that situation. And my heart really goes out to them. It has absolutely nothing to do with anything else.

  3. So, when we got home this morning, my wife said, "so, you wanna barbeque some chicken breasts tonight?" Brined it for 4 hours. Rubbed it up with The Dominant One and cooked em to an internal 165. Mix of Corky's regular and hot sauces. Served with slaw and sweet corn. They were pretty good, plus I have 3 leftover. I know what lunch will be the next 3 days...

  4. Deaths can be measured per total number of cases or per time period (per day, per week, etc.). The stats that are most meaningful to me would be deaths per time period and number of hospitalizations. Deaths as a percentage of cases might be interesting but not as meaningful as deaths per time period and hospitalizations. Deaths and hospitalizations per time period are most important to my way of thinking because they reflect the true effect to the country. For example, if this thing spreads so wildly that a large number are dying every week then it doesn’t really matter what the percentage per case is because the spread is so wild that lots of people die. For example, you could have ten deaths out of 1000 total cases for 1%. You could also have 500 deaths out of 100,000 cases for the same time period for 0.5%. We could be happy that the rate is only 0.5% but it would not take into account that the thing spread so wildly that you had 500 deaths. Hospitalizations could be measured similarly. The more that are hospitalized, even if they live, strains our medical system, including suffering, costs, possibility of further infection, compromising brave workers, etc,

  5. Realistically the Pacers ceiling even with Vic is losing in the second round. When you look at the big picture and realize all players will be at a higher injury risk going from 0-60 with the restart, and Vic is still coming back from an incredibly serious injury heading into a contract year, and just the strangeness of the situation; this is really a no brainier. I'm actually glad he isn't playing; I don't think it changes our ceiling, he will be healthy heading into next year, some promising young guys are going to get a chance to shine. I think this is 100% the best thing for the team long term.

  7. Amen. Born in Chicago and I find our pizza disgusting. If I wanted lasagna I'll make it. Same preference. Thin crust...and plenty of meat and Jack's is eating up one area of my freezer right now. 5 for $10 at Kroger this week.

  8. Simple stuff for a simple guy. Cracker thin crust with extra pepperoni and cheese... To be honest, I like the cheap old Jack's frozen pepperoni pizzas they sell for $2.50 at Walmart just fine. Favorite restaurant pizza is from J Christoper Italian restaurant in Kingwood...

  13. I do not disagree. Just saying the testing per million is not the way I would determine if we are the best or not. As for New York, I think we may be dealing with recency bias. It is premature to say they did a good job at flattening the curve and others are not. They are no longer the hot spot. But when this horrible thing is finally over, I am thinking them and New Jetsey will still lead the pack in cases and deaths in realtion to population. Even with the blow ups in Texas, Florida, California etc, they have a very long way to go to get to New York or New Jersey numbers. I think we do agree, lets hope they do not approach those numbers. It can still be avoided if people start using basic common sense and follow simple protocols.

  14. My air compressor assaulted me today. Was putting it away after doing brakes on my truck. The hose came loose from the chuck on the tank and my berries took a shot of air and got drilled my the end of the hose. Not cool.

  15. Not sure anybody thinks we're going to 'beat' this. Quite the contrary. That said, while we aren't going to beat a hurricane, we can board up windows, build houses on stilts, evacuate population, etc. to minimize the damage.

  16. Jordy was never a PG. I played against him probably 10 times and watched him play 50 times before he got to IU. He was NEVER a PG. Dee Davis was the PG in HShttps://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/players/dee-davis-1.html , Yogi, Verdell, and even Victor were much more PGs than Jordy. AAU.. Colt Ryan was his PG. https://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/players/colt-ryan-1.html

  17. We've finally starting emerging from our Corona-cocoon and venturing here to the Eastern Shore of Maryland, where we normally spend a good chunk of our summers (here for about a week on this trip). I've been impressed for the most part when out and about. People that live here are wearing masks - tourists out on the main drag are clueless. We went to the Farmer's Market on Sat. morning and everything was nicely marked for social distance and everyone was wearing a mask. It felt like a good example of a small town (St. Michaels, MD) trying to do what's best to protect each other. Lots of retirees here. When you go out on the main drag though, the tourists are not wearing masks at all. Not sure where they are coming from, but the sidewalks are very narrow and it just looks they have decided "Welp, we are on vacation, so we will do what we want." They are *carrying* masks, b/c stores are not allowing people in w/o masks. They slip them on to enter stores, which is something I guess. I've went into Harris Teeter once to get food/beer and it was fine. Kind of weird, b/c we are not used to driving places, parking, and then going in. But everyone was wearing masks - employees and customers. I felt safe and it felt like a semblance of life (and jobs) was returning. I've been hopeful watching the death rate, but also realizing there is a typical lag and it could start creeping up. The positive case rate is alarming. There is no way around that. Hoping that mid-late July isn't a disaster, but also know that it might be. The thing that I still can't get over is just how badly we are screwing this up as a country. It's maddening that we are months into this and STILL have such an out-sized number of positive cases and deaths. We represent 4.25% of the worlds population, yet we have almost 26% of the world's positive cases and almost 25% of the world's deaths. Oh, and that's not just b/c we test more. We are 25th in testing per 1M people. Does this not really get in people's craw?? Aren't we supposed to be better than this? I honestly feel like a large part of our governing body has just given up trying to fight it and hoping that we as a nation just become numb to the ever-spiraling caseloads.

  19. As far as ICU capacity, I can only speak from my personal experiences. In 2015, my brother was in ICU for just under 3 weeks until he passed. At no time during those 3 weeks was the ICU not at or very near capacity. If a room opened up to to discharge or death, it was filled within a matter of hours. My mom has been in and out of ICU multiple times in the last half-dozen years. In a couple of those instances, she had to spend time in a regular bed until ICU space opened up. My point is that ICU capacity can be misleading, both ways. If a hospital that typically runs at 90% capacity is now at 95% capacity because of Covid, that's not in and of itself alarming, rather just a slight deviant from the norm. At the same time, if a hospital is at 40% ICU capacity, it's not necessarily a good thing if the hospital normally runs at 20% capacity. The problem with the numbers that are thrown around (from both sides) is that they are meaningful only when taken into context. Even the number of deaths, which is ultimately how this disease should be judged, can be misleading. Even taking away the 'of Covid' and 'with Covid' argument, things like the age of those that die is important. If 60% of the deaths in a community/city/state are people over 80, that is meaningful as it relates to how society should react. By contrast, if 60% of the deaths were school aged children, then you shut down schools. But, if only a fraction of one percent of deaths are school aged children, you leave schools open and take steps to protect those in the community that are at risk.

  20. I haven't either. We of course have some major Pacers fans who are outspoken -- and I'm not bad-mouthing anyone, that goes with the territory of team fans -- but I just don't see the basis to really criticize Vic here. Vic couldn't have done more in his time with the Pacers to demonstrate work ethic, team building / team player, and leadership. And the Pacers are clearly heavily invested in him and his future. Whether this injury will limit his return to true all-star status remains to be seen, but I see that as a different matter.

  21. I think I just said that ^^^ !😁 I like the analogy to war. They reference the "fog" of war. Individuals do not necessarily see the big picture. The fluidity. The interpretations over time. So many points that could be made.

  22. Deaths are at an all time low. (Sorry @mrflynn03- see you posted the same chart) . I acknowledged some places are still hot but that is a LOCAL issue and people are not dying at the rate they previously were. Don't say I disregarded increases, I haven't. I"m saying things - for the vast majority of the country- are clearly improving. There is no National Health Emergency going on around me. You are the one living in a bubble. As lockdowns are relaxed, and mass gatherings (for BLM, Fireworks, etc) pick up, it is logical cases will pick up. That is to be expected. I see it as progress, not an emergency (Not saying that there are not pockets truly facing an emergency before you accuse me of that). Furthermore, the curve hasn't flattened. I was wrong. It is clearly declining (measuring deaths).

  24. I always thought the name "Redskins" was the only one that was obviously a slur...I'm amazed that name made it this long... I know the "Indian" caricature of Chief Wahoo upset some people. 10-1 that name gets changed too... The Braves and Chiefs seem to have the backing of some Native Americans and I personally don't see those names as disparaging in our lexicon... But, I'm constantly surprised by The Church of the Perpetually Offended, so who knows... I do think as historical side-note that this is karma at its best...The Redskins were the last NFL team to integrate, and their owner at that time, George Preston Marshall, was know throughout the league as a bigot. Use of a stadium, ironically later renamed RFK Stadium, forced that issue too...

  25. FWIW, I'm not seeing him get the backlash anywhere except this board.

  26. Agree. As a fan of a different team, I’m a little surprised at the backlash he’s getting.

  27. I think that is pushing the envelope. A few months ago, yes. Today the curve has been flattened, deaths are dropping and it's more of a local health emergency in Select places

  28. Hey you guys just make me jealous, never been a grill chef and never smoked anything! I get so hungry looking at your pictures! That being said I’m only “Only One Guy” (sorry I digress, one of my favorite movie lines from the last Riddick movie) Anyway, it doesn’t make much sense for me to fire everything up for one Brat! Still this pan grilled Reuben Brat turned out pretty darned good!

  30. Couldn't agree more. As you know, I know many people in AZ (including someone who works at the Childrens Hospital) and have been following that state closely. Keep in mind many new cases are from younger, generally healthier, people who may not be too effective in social distancing. They don't require the time and resources of an elderly patient that has other health issues. I think people took the reopening as an "all clear" signal and hopefully others will now learn to reopen and still take precautions.

  31. It is very promising that deaths are down but in many states, including AZ, we are nearing critical levels of ICU capacity. I imagine part of the reason deaths are down is that we did “flatten the curve” for some time and we used that to, at least minimally, expand our hospital capacity. If cases continue to explode, we will again run into the original hospital capacity problem. If we do (and I hope we don’t), deaths will follow. AZ just activated a “crisis of care” model - a literal mathematical formula to determine who gets scarce healthcare resources. Other states with big outbreaks are not far behind. This is a really big and really unknown disease. There is going to continue to be a lot of contradicting information, IMO.

  33. Yes, I think Redtails has a good shot. Ron Rivera grew up in a military household and I think they want to honor the military with the new name. Also, I have family in DC and been there a lot. I’ve seen first hand that they have a huge African American fan base who would be proud of the name. I think the Tuskegee Airmen had a big DC connection in their ranks too. It just makes perfect sense. I was making the point that they are probably double checking it from every angle to be sure that nobody whines about it from some angle they are unaware of since complaining about everything is like the plague now.
    1 point
  34. Based on what Ron Rivera has been saying, I truly think this has a good shot to be the answer. They are probably vetting it from every angle to make sure there’s no way they get backlash since practically everything gets backlash these days, even if the intent is noble.

  36. I posted about a week ago or maybe it was 3 days ago. Who knows anymore. Anyway I've had a huge turnaround in the tomato game. 3 big pots I have at least 18-19 small green tomatoes starting to take off and I can see more on the way.....patience I guess is all I needed. My peppers seem like their growing an inch a day. Have 4 banana peppers filling in, 3 bell peppers and at 4 I think their called sweet heat peppers which for some reason I'm supposed to let them go from green to red.

  37. Agree. Non-revenue generating sports at the bigger schools and all sports at the D2 and D3 levels are in great danger.

  38. This sports stuff is going to get nutty. People point to athletes potentially being put in harms way for our entertainment or a bunch of rich people losing money if sports don’t come back, but it goes so much deeper than that. Of course the health and safety of all should come first, absolutely, but sports not coming back will be crushing. Not necessarily because of our ability to be entertained on our couches, but the millions of people that rely on sports for their livelihood. Not the athletes or rich network execs, but the ushers that work in the stadiums, the crews responsible for setting the courts and fields up. The lower lever media grunts that rely on getting b-roll footage or interview clips for that nights news, the bars and restaurants that surround stadiums, the D2 coach who has made their living coaching soccer, etc., etc. The list of people that rely on major sports to be played is a long, long list. Again, that doesn’t mean we should put D1college football players or NBA players at risk, just pointing out how much deeper the need for sports actually runs.
