  1. His own words.... "The main thing lacking with this study is that it only looked at risk to the person wearing the face mask. It says nothing about the risk that the person wearing the mask will infect another person. That is an equally important parameter, and at present there are no high quality studies looking in to it, so before we can truly say that masks fill no function, we need another large randomized controlled trial that looks at the ability of face masks to prevent the mask wearer infecting other people" Hasn't everybody primarily said the biggest benefit to wearing a mask was to keep you from spreading to others, not so much to protect yourself? This study, and his analysis didn't even test what the main purpose of wearing a mask is. Not sure what point there was in this study. It measured something that isn't really part of the mask wearing debate.

  7. The deal, for me, on masks.... Do they work? Do they help? I say slightly, just my opinion. You can find plenty of studies to argue both sides. So it is what it is. I suspect it helps, but far from eliminates risk. For me, it is more about social responsibility. An overlooked fallout from this pandemic is anxiety, depression, and a myriad of mental well being issues. Wearing a mask gives people a sense of comfort. A sense of community. My wife suffers from major anxiety. It is so hard to watch what this is doing to her. If we go grocery shopping and ONE person is not wearing a mask, she sprints to the car. So, maybe wearing a mask helps reduce the spread. Maybe it gives a little sense of peace to a neighbor. There is zero risk to wearing a mask, beyond pride. There ARE proven benefits to wearing a mask, my wife. So I do not care what any study says in either direction. To me, it is doing the right thing for my small community. (Sorry if typos are abound, typing quickly from my phone)

  8. People must be living in way different places than me. Around me, restaurants are supposed to be carry out only, and 6 out of the 7 in the towns that make up my school district are still open for in person eating. Going into any of the gas stations, you'll be lucky to see anybody else wearing a mask. I'm in a rural area so I get that people might not be as strict about things as in cities, but in public I don't even see 25% of people wearing masks. This idea that everyone is wearing masks isn't even close. Our county is getting close to a 20% positivity rate, and the county health department can't keep up with contact tracing because we're having so many cases. Still very few people wearing masks.

  9. @ReacherI'm not sure how to ask this without your or others deciding I, as a mod, am taking a political side. I'm not. However, I am going to ask that you immediately back off these CLEARLY politically driven posts / articles. Advocating not wearing masks is just flat out ridiculous and frankly dangerous. The whole ignore-Covid-don't-wear-masks has been a highly political BS tool and it clearly, indisputably and stupidly, caused Covid cases to spread including at political rallies where mask--wearing was discouraged. Covid has killed over 1/4 million Americans. Enough of the BS anti-mask crap. No, I'm not trying to get into politics. No, I am not OK'ing anyone to do so regardless whether or not they agree or disagree with this take, but yes, I am asking that you immediately knock off the anti-mask stuff. It is not appropriate for this Board, period, and it is re-spurring the political BS that has no place here. We can just lock this thread, if/as needed.

  10. I expected Pritchard to go in the second but I love the pick. If he proves to be quick enough to defend, I think he will be solid. I saw him play a few games late at night and he was outstanding at that level. I donā€™t have his stats in front of me but I think he really takes care of the ball and can shoot lights out. Heā€™s got an edgy attitude, and I tend to love edgy guys like that. Brown and Smart are my favorite Celtics but Pritchard will be up there for me. Guys that make the tough/clutch, team oriented play. Winners.

  11. This is what some keep on going back to when they criticize the collected data, but the problem is that in order to have a randomized controlled trial, you need to have a maskless control group, which in a pandemic is not a good idea or responsible study to be performing. In the article I posted on the last page a scientists was quoted: ā€œYou canā€™t do randomized trials for everything ā€” and you shouldnā€™t.ā€ As clinical researchers are sometimes fond of saying, parachutes have never been tested in a randomized controlled trial, either.

  12. Heard that yesterday as well. I did not know Edwards had lost his Mom and Grandmother within a year of each other and was homeless prior to Grandma taking him and Mom in. For those reasons alone I will pull for this kid. I did find it interesting when he said I dont love basketball but am just really good at it

  15. No, we lost those games because Painter had his systems in place, what with being a longer term established coach v CAM who was still having to incorporate players from the previous coaching regime.

  17. We don't have an office in the house. I'm working at the kitchen table. My wife at the dining room table. There is a bathroom in between the two rooms. I usually have the courtesy to go to another bathroom. But, my wife likes the easy access. So, if I'm on a Zoom call, I have to be strategic when I take myself on mute or everyone on the call gets to hear the toilet flush.

  20. We think they are from the same litter, but Buffy (the female) is definitely bigger. They do like to cuddle up together and they fight like maniacs. Around here hair ties are like your ice cubes. They will play with them for hours. Will have to see if they like ice cubes, Chloe loves them.

  21. Are they from the same litter? The 2 we have from the same litter are attached at the hip. They do the same as yours. And one goes absolutely nuts over ice cubes. I could go all day and not see it but the second the freezer door opens there she is.

  23. So, Ruthie the foster kitten went to her furever home about two weeks ago. She really captured our heart in the five days she was with us and it felt good to help get a kitten placed into a home. So, we are fostering two 16-week old kittens currently. They are INSANE and so much fun. They can go from being a purr machine in your lap to attacking each other in an instant. Weā€™ve had them since Saturday and not sure how long they will be here. Otis the cat is not amused by their hijinks. Chloe the dachshund loves them and one of the kittens just adores her. Thatā€™s been sweet to see.

  24. I feel sorry for the people who cant actually wear a mask. I used to work with a guy who was so claustrophobic, he couldn't keep a mask on his face. I saw him literally jump off a 20' extension ladder, and flail aound on the ground like he was on fire. All because of a paper mask... dude was white as a sheet and sweeting like crazy.

  25. We'll see. Shooting and defense is what you want around Tatum, Brown and Kemba. This kid is apparently a shooter and Langford showed a lot of defensive potential last year. I would think if Nesmith is even an average defender he would win out over time. My only concern with Nesmith is I saw he only shot 34% from 3 two years ago, then he shot incredibly well last season but in an injury shortened season.

  30. Why are you so pessimistic? From a results standpoint itā€™s pretty hard to argue that we havenā€™t improved each year under CAM. From a recruiting, defensive, and effort standpoint itā€™s not even close to the previous 7-8 years with Crean, and thatā€™s a direct result of CAM. Crean left an awful group of players from a talent standpoint. Hopefully with a team fully built by CAM this year weā€™ll see the offense improve as well which will result in more wins. He absolutely deserves the benefit of the doubt up to this point. You werenā€™t willing to give him a few years to build something? This year and next we need to start seeing better results, no doubt.

  32. Posted this in another thread, but somewhat related to the discussion here. It what is and we need to see continued improvement, but man. Agree, but man that schedule including non-conference is TOUGH. Looking at the pre-season top 25 (AP and Coaches) we have 15 games of 27 against ranked teams (assuming we play Texas and UNC in the Maui). We have an additional 4 games against teams getting votes in Providence, Purdue (2) and Maryland. That is 19 of 27 extremely tough games. This doesnā€™t include Butler or road games at NEB or NWestern. Which leaves us with ONLY 5 games we can look at and saythat should definitely be a W (Tenn Tech, N Alabama, N-western at home, PSU at home and Minny at home). WOW!

  34. It is hard for the pacers because they never pick in the top of the draft. Even this year having a top 5 pick does not even guarantee you getting an elite player. Listening to Fran Fraschilla he doesn't think any of projected top 5 picks will be an elite all star player. He thinks those players will be a third or 4th options on a good NBA team. He likes the players that will be picked in the middle of the draft better but doesn't see any real game changers in this draft.

  36. The retail places around here demand it. At the entrance of the New Caney Walmart, a polite lady checks everybody coming into the store. If you don't have your mask on, she asks you to don one... Doesn't hurt that she's got another Walmart guy standing beside her who looks like the Missing Link...and I don't think he's there for window dressing... Texas does have its charms...

  39. They did, but the people embracing this study arenā€™t reading it critically or even closely.. I really donā€™t mean to be a dick here, but Iā€™m tired of people trying to prove that you (or the ones you love) are better off w/o masks during a worldwide pandemic. It kind of lessens the benefit if you wear a mask, and everyone around you is too stupid, insecure, or proud to get the message. This isnā€™t hard. We all come from different backgrounds and live in different geographical areas, but it seems like we a have all begrudgingly adopted mask wearing to protect those around us. These ā€œstudiesā€ just give selfish people ammunition to be selfish.

  40. While I understand your points itā€™s not just about local market, heck I would say thatā€™s small potatoes. These players will make tons of cash off Instagram and Twitter posts. The way IU has it setup with this company they literally see how much money they will make based on the media platform they post on which is based off followers and over social media score. The UK players will make gobs of cash off things like this.
    1 point
  41. I never said that you said that. I'm saying that is the much more difficult part and those are the players IU has struggled to stack on the roster.
    1 point
  42. That's fine and I completely agree that you need role players, but the role players are the easy piece of the equation. Any Indiana coach can get good, solid role players just recruiting the state. The hard part is getting the game-changer, future pro's, that are the reason you're in a position to win titles. You need at least two of those guys, if not 3-4 to win a title. Just to be clear, I'm not talking about 1 and dones. I'm talking about future NBA players. Those come in a variety of ways, but you typically need 2-3 to be a legit, consistent title contender. The role players are the easier part, and IU seems to have an abundance of those.

  43. You're right, and I'm kinda tilting at windmills here, but... There were 3 very winnable B10 games we lost last year (Maryland and Wisconsin at home, and U of I on the road) that you could attribute to either coaching or player chemistry/leadership. Winning those would have put us at 12-8 tied for 4th with the Whinin Illini. If you choose the latter here, those excuses should be gone. Archie has pretty much his team now, If you choose the former, well I guess we'll see more of that this year... I know it's hypothetical, but something to chew on...

  46. Paulie, I hope your recovery is easy and full. One of our friends was one of the first cases here in Brooklyn (sheā€™s a doctor at a hospital in Long Island). She recovered pretty quickly, but we were really worried b/c we knew so little about it then. My wife talked to her earlier this week and sheā€™s been really struggling with neurological issues since getting COVID. At this point, she sometimes has trouble walking properly and is not back to a full work week.
