Kelvin Sampson created his own downfall. No one to blame but himself. Regardless of how minor the infractions look in retrospect, he knew the rules. He was the head of the rules committee, for God's sake. He had had issues previously, and knew that he was on a short leash. He should have had a mindset of being squeaky clean. Kinda like a guy on probation knows he can't have one slip up lest he lose his freedom.. Even more egregious than the infractions, Sampson made the conscious decision to bring in some kids with more than just sketchy backgrounds. He then did little to nothing to rein those kids in. The inmates were truly running the asylum. I don't care how good Sampson looks now, IU made the correct decision in removing him, and the toxic environment he created, from the program.13 points

It's painful to think what kind of success he could have had here. The man might be one of the Top 5 coaches in the country,9 points

Very painful. I mean in his 2nd year the week leading up to getting his walking papers we were ranked near top 10 and blowing the doors off of Sparty so of course our admin at the time dropped a nuke on a Final 4 team and our program hasn't recovered since. If Sampson stayed I have no doubt on the court the product would deliver F4's and chances at titles. I think that's what drives me crazy. He did that inside of 20 months.8 points

This. Sampson knowingly cheated. Sure, they were stupid rules but Sampson knew them, intentionally broke them, got caught, continued to break the same rules, and then got caught again. Such hubris. He believed (maybe still believes) that the rules don't apply to him and/or that he is way more clever than he actually is. A slippery slope that may have turned into much worse if the administration had looked the other way on the phone calls. During his short time at IU, there were constant rumors of players using drugs. The team's academics did a nose dive. I remember there was a stat being floated around at the time of Sampson's graduation rate going back through his previous stops and his graduation rate was atrocious. Winning is nice but that was really all he cared about. Not rules. Not the character of his players. Not academics.7 points

I am going to be FURIOUS if he doesn't get an offer ASAP. I know for a fact Archie loves the kid. Zero clue what he's waiting for.5 points

Same...Coaches vs Cancer breakfast the morning the news broke later that day. Met him and felt arrogance but he also had a side to him where certain types of kids would be drawn to him. Of course between Senderoff bumbling and stumbling at our table....and Dakich all smiles with the gang he now criticizes so much that day in it's entirety is still one of the worst I can remember. Back to the thread. If a replacement is made I think it needs to be someone with a little more energy in public.4 points

We were talking about this one in the audiophile forum because of how great is sounds. Anybody want to share their favorite ‘best mastered/produced’ albums. Dark Side of the Moon doesn’t count. In no particular order some of mine are: REM - Automatic for the People U2 - Achtung Baby Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream: to this day I’m obsessed with the warmth of the guitar on that album. I think I read Billy layered a lot of the guitar tracks 3 times. Re-listen to ‘Hummer’ because it gives you a little of everything...it’s pretty much just showing off. Spoon - Gimmie Friction (One of @IUFLA’s new favorites) ...and this is a single and a simple song, but for some reason Streets of Philadelphia by Bruce always comes to mind of a perfectly mastered song.3 points

Automatic for the People is really well done, so is Siamese Dream. Great choices! I would have mentioned Rumours and Aja for sure. I have a beat up old copy of Aja that still sounds incredible. I have a super fancy 45rpm double album set of Rumours that’s amazing, but I’m not too keen on the songs being spread over four sides instead of two. When I got the new edition of Rumours I put our old one out on the sidewalk one day with a bunch of aother albums for people to take for free. My wife happened to leave right afterwards before anyone had taken it and she texted me “You can’t get rid of Rumours!” Neil Young’s albums are usually very well recorded and mastered. My own additions that hasn’t been mentioned would be: Cowboy Junkies - The Trinity Sessions Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot And too many jazz albums to list. Nothing sounds like a good jazz quartet or trio that’s well recorded. Something about the all acoustic instruments just creates magic through your speakers.2 points

We are like you guys, pretty strict lockdown for the beginning and then gradual going out, but maintaining precautions. Feel lucky to have never had it during this all this time, especially here in NYC. But we didn’t hesitate to get the vaccine. Main reason is that you can do everything correctly but there’s always those people who just don’t get it. B/c of them we got the vaccine. Now when I see idiots on the sub not wearing a mask I just don’t sweat it. Before I would have had to get up and move away from them. The side effects are thankfully usually minor, though there will always be cases like @NotIThatLives relatives. I know of a co-worker who got bad face sewlling after the first dose. I had a pretty strong reaction to the second shot, but it didn’t last. And I would take that any day over the lingering issues that so many have had - not to mention death. I also think the more people are vaccinated, the quicker we get out of this thing.2 points

Having had the damn thing, I'm still going to get the vaccination after I get my neck procedure done on 3/24... I know it's mild on some people, but I'd take 20 shots not to go through that again...2 points

Was 66 here yesterday. We’ve been enjoying lunch breaks on the terrace lately, but it was too hot and sunny yesterday! I need to start getting all my pots ready for planting and go get some more potting soil. Love the excitement of planting things in the spring.2 points

Ayden had his first golf lesson. We just found out his school won't have a Jr high golf team, so he will have to go practice with rival school and compete as only golfer from his school. His swing is better than Dad's and only going to get better. 20210309_163328.mp42 points

You're not focusing on the actual situation. If I was unemployed and personally offered both jobs today, I would take Arizona. No question. Sign me up. However, if I was currently the coach at Purdue, Purdue was my alma mater, and I had a Final Four quality roster in place for next year, I'm staying at Purdue. You don't simply turn down the chance to go to a Final Four for what may be a complete rebuild with sanctions thrown in, especially when you are having success at your Alma Mater.2 points

That's right! Bloom... He always had some good insight. The Loopers were a piece of work, that's for sure...1 point

Yes. He was Bloom. Omg the Loopers. Blast from the past. I wonder where they ended up? I know he rubbed some people the wrong way but I did like RMKFAN1 though. But then again, I liked GoColts and he rubbed many the wrong way. I value diversity in opinion even if I don’t agree.1 point

Holtman never turned down IU. Problem was IU wasn't interested. Glass went all in on Archie, all in.1 point
-
IU never went after Holtmann so it's easy for him to say that. It's the same as Aaron Henry saying that IU wasn't in his final 4 because they stopped recruiting him after Anderson and Hunter committed. Glass locked in on Archie and that was his guy. He didn't look at anyone else.1 point
-
If he does come back, people should not lose their minds if he gets an extension. One scenario is to throw an extension out there with the buyout dropping really low. It becomes like a non-guaranteed contract in football. That way, he’d be able to recruit and say that he’s under contract and we would be able to get out. 2022 is a key recruiting year. We have Gunn. We are after forward Karaban, guard Brown, some bigs like Phillips. We need to land some talent regardless of who our coach is for the long term. You don’t want the cupboard bare like when Crean got here.1 point
