  1. I massively endorse this hire! Armond Hill was an assistant on Doc Rivers staff with the Celtics when I worked there. Just a tremendous person and a great coach, especially in the area of working with players individually and guiding/mentoring. Love this hire. I'll repeat again, I was extremely discouraged by the Mike Woodson hire and was very vocally against it. But after cooling off and digesting it for a few days after the announcement, I came back to the board and said that what Scott Dolson was doing seemed far more strategic in terms of building a pro-style program that the top players want to be apart of, as opposed to just lazily "hiring an IU guy". What Dolson has done here, and in turn what Mike Woodson is executing is a clear and direct plan for putting IU back on top in college basketball. How can players not be sold on joining a program being led by Mike Woodson, Thad Matta, Armond Hill and Dane Fife, and that's before even getting to the other two assistants who by all accounts are great recruiters, etc.

  2. What I love most about all of this is, they are spending $$$ on coaches. These are guys who are very well connected and respected. To be honest, this situation is as good as hiring Stevens. I too and most people I knew, were not high on hiring Woodson. We were all wrong. What I wanted IU to do was build a foundation for long term success. With who they have brought in, any hand off from Woodson (hopefully after success) to his successor (Fife?) will have been working with experienced guys (Woodson, Matta, Hill, Hunter) and younger "up and comers" and everything in between (Larry Brown, CBK, Isiah, etc.). This is a very, very impressive staff. Compare this to Archie's staff and it's night and day. Any disappointment on my end was erased when they got Matta and Fife, the rest of this is over-the-top. Nothing is certain, but outside of them getting caught cheating, I don't see how this can fail.

  3. My disappoint lasted about 60 minutes, or however long it took for the Matta’s announcement to drop. Of course wins ultimately matter, but from my perspective so far all the right moves seem to have been made. In fact, some of the hires have went above and beyond what my expectations could’ve imagined. Instead of investing money in a big name head coach; we’re investing in personnel to build a strong foundation to the program. The writing is and has been on the wall in CBB....pro style, pro development, pro this, pro that, and now pro marketing and self promotion. In addition to personnel, the program is also making an investment in being the leader in the NIL change. We have the Cuban center, a strong social media team to guide our athletes (programs no longer can say ‘don’t tweet’ to avoid trouble...it’s now engrained in the college athletics), and we are now offering classes to athletes that center specifically around financial management and understanding endorsement contracts. Whether we like or don’t like how college athletics are evolving, it’s better that we embrace the change and become leaders in this area, instead of the followers who initially resist change. This goes beyond Woodson, although everyday it becomes more apparent he’s the right guy to lead this ‘rebirth’.

  4. Based on this post... I can see why we have so many retired mods. @bluegrassIU scares them all away.

  5. Short interview with Jalen talking about IU, what he likes, his relationship with Dane Fife, and apprecIating Woody’s NBA background.

  6. I was not thrilled about Woodson for about 30 seconds, then started reading and hearing more and I thought, yeah, kids are going to eat this guy up. Plus the rolodex has gotten some use. The staff that has assembled is insane. Dane Fife is literally the 3rd or 4th most experienced, known, and maybe valuable asset. The package of staff. Has anything like this been done on this scale in college before? Haven't even mentioned that Coach Woodson says he talks to Larry Brown almost everyday.

  7. I just can’t give Dolson enough credit. I’m not trying to get the cart before the horse, but man, what a great hire that few saw coming. High level ball is all about the NBA. And Woodson is leaving no stone unturned. I am loving the next 10 years. Finally, the admin just may be smarter than the boards!

  9. If Tamar Bates was from Indiana he’d be way more hyped. I think it’ll work to our/his advantage, and I couldn’t be more thrilled that he’s in an Indiana uniform.

  10. Funny enough all the sportswriters and commentators are like so sad this will be the first finals in like forever that Lebron isn't playing in it and I'm like "HECK YEAH!". I'm really starting to like how the playoffs are shaping up. Suns if Paul stays healthy look fabulous...and fun to watch. (That said they got matched up to an LA team without AD and now Denver without Jamal Murray and a couple other key pieces).

  11. Should make Scott happy....I didn't see Tamar lift a thing...just walks through...say's what's up...and walks out...probably to go get shots up lol 🤣

  12. Before y’all go “all in” with your chips, you might want to see the team win some real games and not lose at home to in-state rivals. Thad Matta is still the key ingredient in my opinion.

  13. He is not credible. He is in-credible! (See what I did there? I took the word "credible", that @BobSaccamanno correctly used, added two letters and changed the meaning to illustrate how awesome and handsome @BGleas is. Just explaining my geniusosity to the common folk that may have missed it).

  14. I'm really trying to take my IU blinders off but top to bottom?? Not many staffs have this many angles in college hoops covered in the climate we live in now. Exciting times for sure. Hope it plays on the court as well as I'm envisioning in a couple of years.

  15. No question. You’re classy not to brag but you were one of the first ones on board with Woody (even before the hire, if I recall correctly?).

  16. Wow - I do not see any scenario where we are not a serious player in college basketball in the near future. Just wow!

  17. Hey All, Natty, UpperArlington, and I are going to the Sept 18th game vs Cincy, and would love to get a tailgate/get together with other board members! It’s a 12et/11ct kickoff, and I would get there early to set up shop for everyone to come by. I don’t know if I plan to do much food, but if people want to chip in then we can get people fed and drink the day away. Please let me know if you can make it, because I will at least get snacks and some drinks for everyone. Hope to see a lot of you there, and I will posted this on BTB as well.

  19. Maybe that has been IU's problem....they've been preparing for a chess tournament instead of a basketball?? 😝

  20. Exactly. Is it harder to win a title in Utah, Indiana, Milwaukee, etc., etc., than it is in LA, Miami or other prime markets? Sure it is. But at the same time, the Knicks haven't been a contender since 1999, the Clippers have never been a contender, and if I'm being honest the Celtics have only been a true contender for about a 3-4 year period (2008-2010/12) since about 1987. Those are three of the most prime markets in the league. The bottom line is that you need smart management, an owner willing to go all-in when the opportunity is there, and of course some luck. The Pacers were unlucky with injuries to Granger and PG, but also have not had an owner willing to go all-in. I don't know if I believe this necessarily, but PG's side of the Pacers story is that he wanted to stay but his breaking point was when the top PF in the NBA (PG's words) called him and said he wanted to join him in Indiana and when PG brought this to management they wouldn't pull the trigger. Again, I don't know if that is true, but it does sound like something Pacers management would do. You put PG with say Anthony Davis (assuming that is who PG was referrencing) on that Pacers squad and you're contending during that time period in the East. To win a title in the NBA you have to be smart and lucky, but regardless of the market it also requires an owner willing to spend when the team is close and an opportunity arises.

  23. Actually it did. In 1990 my Senior year I tore my ACL 2 days before our 1st basketball game. So my college plans changed. 4 months later my dad that had been absent in my life due to his alcoholism died of a heart attack. Early in 1990 he got clean started going to church was getting married and completely changed his life and we became pretty close. I struggled with why GOD would bring him back into my life to take him away. So at that point my future waa very unknown. I decided not to go to college and work roofing houses and buildings. Hated it and realized my whole life all I ever wanted was to escape the cycle of poverty and be the first in my family to go to college. After 2 years of roofing I finally went to IU and my junior year I had a bad accident and had to go back home for 8 months. After all that long journey yes from my graduation to graduation was 8 years and I am not even a doctor.

  24. Not only did he graduate from Bloomington North but he was a member of the 1976 Indiana All-Star team with Mike Woodson. He played 4 years at Oklahoma scoring over 1,000 pts. His coach in college? Dave Bliss.

  25. DUDE... that is a great find article! It is bringing back memories of me (Bouchiee) whippin the crap out of my little bro (5 yrs the younger) in our brand new Nerf BBall goal hung from the closet door. To be honest, he was pretty soft competition... Anyway, it also reminds me that Steve is why I wanted a super curly perm. Dad was a total HELL no... No matter how bad I wanted it, looking back now though with my bright orange/ red hair, Dad was 100% TOTALLY FREAKIN WRONG.! ! ! I would have rocked that Bouchiee Carrot top! (at 4'7") .

  26. Great post. Very informative (I frankly hasn’t heard of him until five minutes ago but his resume speaks loudly). Also, I appreciate your honesty and candor regarding your feelings. No revisionism. That is partly why you’re so credible.

  29. Can you imagine being a 5*, out of state recruit on a visit to Indiana and you and your parents are sitting in an office reviewing film and talking about your future with Mike Woodson, Thad Matta and Armond Hill? I don't mean to not include in-state players, but those guys already have a tie to IU and being interested, this is the first time since probably Bob Knight that IU will have a draw to out of state 5* guys beyond just tradition, fanbase or some direct link an assistant had to the player.

  31. Besides winning I wanna see some passion and excitement just like we see with IU football. I feel during CAM’s tenure everything was so boring and robotic.

  32. it would take brogdon, sabonis and at a min two first rd picks and possibly even aaron holiday for Dame

  33. The Pacers #1 need is a top PG so they can move Brogdon off the ball. The Pacers really want to make a huge trade maybe put Brogdon and Turner or Sabonis. I know it wouldn't ever happen but Brogdon, Sabonis and a first round pick for Lillard

  35. Kid just seems to ooze good vibes and lights up the room like a young Victor Oladipo....hope he lights up the floor like him too. I just feel like this kid is a culture builder as much as a championship builder (but I look for that too). Love his energy!

  36. See. That's the stuff this guy was talking about. We all have our talents. I've got a couple but I love learning about other peoples talents. He was discussing where and how and depths....and close to sunken boats for some reason. Anyway. Phenomenal strategy and stories that go into just fishing.

  37. My grandpa probably forgot more about fishing than I ever learned. He grew up in the Ozarks in SW Missouri during the depression. Worked a family farm with about 2 miles of river on the property. Fished there many times. Fast forward, my grandpa, stepdad and I would put out river nets on the White river in the summers. When my Baptist church would have their annual tent revival/vacation bible school lunch would be all the fish we netted. One year we trapped a 54lb flathead. When we weighed fish I would get on a bathroom scale to get my weight, then I would pick up the fish get total weight and calculate. Well I never held a fish that big. My grandpa said to reach in its mouth real quick, wrap my hand around its lower lip and let it bite down on my knuckles. So I did. Ever since then I always grasp them by the lower lip. Other fishermen find this impressive for some reason. Better than being poked the the stingers.

  38. Havent seen much of any cicadas until today. Went to Bloomington earlier and they are absolutely everywhere. Even flying around inside stores. And really loud.

  39. Just wanted to add my two cents in here. I'm absolutely amazed at some of the stuff you fishing guys know. I was playing golf earlier with a guy from down South. Struck up a conversation around hole 5 about Red Snapper fishing. I told him I know nada. I said I'm a let's chart a boat/sun/cold beer,etc...kind of guy. Basically went into all the rules, what bait, where to find....depths, I guess the season only runs 72 hours in SC,etc... Anyway tip of the cap to you fishing guys. So much that goes into it.

  41. Me and my stepdad would spend weekends camping out on sandbars running trotlines and river nets. We caught everything imaginable. But the things I remember most is fishing for perch and crappie in the evening. Yes you can catch panfish in a river or creek. And the 65lb flathead we caught on the trotline.

  42. Good article about us hitting Florida hard this week. One quote I found especially interesting: "Mullen hasn't named an outright leader, but some close to the recruitment would be surprised at this point if he doesn't join his older brother at IU."
