  1. I will just add that the Q&A might understate a bit the extent to which they were impressed.

  2. It is becoming a theme -- Mike Woodson is connecting with recruits by being himself. "It was just crazy talking to him, he’s just like a regular person, super humble, respectful, he’s just like a super cool guy, his relationship with his players, he just seems like a really good person to have as your coach." https://www.thedailyhoosier.com/iu-basketball-recruiting-post-visit-qa-with-2023-top-70-guard-jakai-newton/

  3. Loved these two... "TDH: Is the distance from home going to be a factor for you? Newton: No, not for a school like Indiana." And... "TDH: So did this visit move the needle for you when it comes to Indiana? Newton: Yes, it did."

  4. Waaaay too many Chicken Littles around here tonight. Many thought this year might be a tough one to duplicate last year’s success, given the schedule. No one thought Penix would be as gun shy as he has been. The difference between IU and programs who are consistently good is depth. I think CTA is there with defensive depth, but we have a way to go on offense. Hopefully his last couple of recruiting classes will help rectify that. For all you doom and gloom guys. What has Rutgers, Maryland and Minnesota shown you to believe we can’t beat them? I mean, really. Are you that much of a fair weather fan that you really believe we won’t win another game? Personally, I think we’ll beat all 3, lose to OSU and Michigan, and then fight like hell to beat the Toiletmakers and qualify for a bowl game

  5. All I’m going to say is I trust someone who’s made a career out of training athletes. In all sports, we are just more cautious than ever in preventing injuries from progressing further than necessary. Also, it’s preseason. No need to risk anything at this point. The players and team will be fine.

  6. For me it’s simple: guard play. We have one of the best front court players in the country, with other solid pieces around him. We added veterans on the wing that can put the ball in the bucket in ways we haven’t had in a while. Can XJ, Bates, et al be the kind of bulldogs we need to win tough games? That’s the difference in the middle of the pack and a really special season IMO.

  7. People who think these injury issues are because of Marshall are clueless and just going off the old stupid rumor that lifting and basketball is bad. If anything the injuries would probably be worse without all the training that Marshall does with them.

  8. Just read @The Daily Hoosier Q and A. Sounds like this young man and his mama were thoroughly impressed.

  9. Wentz is on pace for 4600 yards 26TDs and 3INTs. Certainly be nice if TY, Campbell, Nelson, and Smith stayed healthy.

  10. Honestly I don’t think the B1G has looked that great this year. It does look like the traditional powers have found their footing OSU, PSU, Mich, MSU, Iowa….Wisc is the only one really struggling. Iowa just played a terribly flat game. Credit Purdue it was by far their best game this year even with a few missed plays. I’m expecting a snobber knocker for the bucket later this year.

  11. No one cares… You have been absent from here for a while and the Toiletmakers win a game and you feel like you can come over here and spout off on a rivals’ board, when we are struggling. Go away

  12. If you guys get beat by Wisky then you should be banned from ever being ranked the rest of the year.

  16. That and the specializing so early. My buddies and I all played 3 sports and were rarely almost never injured. The few guys I knew that played D1, one in basketball and the other tennis both played at least one other sport. And I don't remember them ever being injured either. To me, multiple sports is cross conditioning. I wonder what the data says on injuries over the last 20 years.

  18. He's training them for a career in the UFC not in basketball. Look at the thighs on Jordan. Like a 1980s Jean-Claude Van Damme.

  19. So my youngest rode in a horse show this morning...here's a pic from that... That Hummer (they were sponsoring the event) was spooking the hell out of a lot of horses. We saw 3 girls get thrown, but thankfully, no one was hurt... So after her 3rd (and last) ride of the day, she tells me and her mother it's her last show for a while...and that she's 7 weeks pregnant... I'm glad she didn't tell us before her ride! So, looking forward to grandchild #2...

  20. While the obvious and correct answers are probably Kopp, XJ and Scoop, I need to be consistent (consistently wrong) and once more go for Rob Phinnesse. I’m not giving up on ROB, damnit! Defensive stopper. Improved confidence. Can play off the ball. Basically, he can concentrate on the things he does best this year.

  22. Stock up on essentials. Water, food, propane, gas, firewood, charcoal..ect First aid supplies. Water purification kits. I was an eagle scout candidate so I can take care of my troop. If you don't have a a supply of guns and ammo you are 10 years too late. Everyone needs to understand what is coming. I really hope I'm wrong.

  25. I'm saying it doesn't make sense to drop a team that much while at the same time rewarding the team that beat them. Eight teams got more votes than Purdue in the Coaches' Poll. That would make Purdue 34th in that poll while being 25th in the AP. You don't usually see that much of a gap between where a team comes in for both polls. This feels like what the SEC does whenever one of its higher-ranked teams loses to an unranked team. Texas A&M and UK both got ranked after beating Alabama and Florida. They want to try and excuse the loss while getting more teams ranked.

  30. You say not as tough, I say not as stupid. Playing through ‘aches and pains’ for a meaningless secret scrimmage, or even a lot of regular season games, doesn’t serve the player or team well long term.

  34. Hope the new coach (voice) helps. He definitely defers too much to the starters on the team. It’s his time to step up…needs to be confident in his game. Make or miss they need that 3rd/4th option and he can be a starter. I know his peers mostly went to bad teams and were given free reign to develop their game guilt free but no excuse you just got to be ready when your number is called.

  35. If we can keep up this level of defensive play I think it wouldn't be too difficult to attract a much better offensive coordinator. Who wouldn't want to have the opportunities on offense the defense provides. Pierre's interception in the end zone being a good example.

  37. It'll be interesting to see what kind of year Jordan has...he's shown (in a small sample size) that he can hit the 3, got a nose for the ball, and has shown some promise on defense... I can see him possibly being a go-to guy in future years, but I'd be surprised if he has advanced that far this year...

  38. The WR are probably the most disappointing for me. I expected them to be a strong point, and they've struggled across the board outside of Matthews before he got hurt. I expected the OL to be bad (not this bad), and I expected Tuttle might struggle, but I thought our WR would help mitigate some of that. I've been really pleased with Warren so far. He obviously inherited a great group, but they've played great. We haven't had enough leads to get the turnovers we got last year. Tough to really go after the QB and force bad throws when they have the lead and don't have to throw.

  39. 50 attempts for 188 yards. That’s under 4 ypa. That’s a special kind of bad. Way too many plays run in front of the sticks. You could bet on it after a couple of drives. The rhythm of the play calling was odd. Then you get the 3rd and 6 plus run calls that led us to 4th and 3. Our receivers are below average across the board. They don’t separate. I have to say I’m surprised by that. Tuttle holds the ball too long at times and he also needs to value the ball more. That’s what you get with an inexperienced QB I guess. Hiller has got to go. I don’t wish anyone ill will with a job, but I think he can land someplace. Other than Hendershot and Bedford, I don’t see any plus players on offense. McFadden and Jones were tremendous. Handy looks skinny but he’s got a knack for pass rushing. Pierre is coming on and can hopefully start next year. Our safeties are first rate. We can harp on the offense but the defense deserves way better. I’m very happy with Warren across the board. Smart guy, great recruiter. Allen needs to take a long look at his offensive coaches. Sometimes the head coach needs to make tough decisions. It’s why they are paid the big bucks.

  41. I think you would be right under Archie's time...too much emphasis on strength, not conditioning (running). Under Woody, I've heard a bunch of players make the comment "we're getting after each other". I think this year, they are practicing harder than ever, and hence the nit-pik injuries. You can bet Woody is getting everything he can out of them in practice. There is still 3 weeks left until the 1st game. We should be fine by then. (I hope)

  45. Yeah, he's had a strong preseason. We'll see if it maintains when everyone comes back, as he still tends to just fade into the background offensively, but he does look much better and more confident this preseason.

  46. Langford with another start in the Celtics final preseason game, granted Jaylen Brown, Al Horford and Marcus Smart are all out. He has a quick 6 points on 3-for-3 shooting, and is playing really well.
