  7. Just saw this stat on twitter. Tony Gwynn could have finished his career 0-1099 and still finished above .300 for his career. Wow.

  9. I agree, but I thought Dakich was better when he first started doing games a decade or so ago. Now he’s trying to be the star of the show like Dickie V. (Archie would never have that problem obviously)

  10. So is will Wade getting off Scott free? Guy just keeps landing 5 stars… Thought Archie was great on the podcast. Would make a better TV analyst than Dakich or Walton.

  15. Eh, there are several factors at work there, starting with Amazon carrying forward a lot of losses before they were profitable. Then, there are research and development credits, solar and wind farm credits and stock options granted to employees that then pay significant income taxes on them. So, if you don't want to encourage research & development, alternative energy investment and paying employees bonuses through stock option programs, we should probably reform the tax code. Then, there is the thorny issue of taxing corporate profits and then taxing the same profits again when those earnings are distributed to shareholders. There is also the issue of U.S. corporate taxes being relatively high even now compared to most developed economies around the globe, incenting numerous U. S. corporations to domicile somewhere outside of the U.S. I know Amazon has played a variation of that game, shifting a lot of it's European profits to Luxembourg to reduce it's tax bill in the Eurozone. As long as there are countries willing to charge corporations less in income taxes to domicile in their country, these games will continue. Raising the U.S. corporate rate will likely cause companies to again resort to shifting corporate offices, profits and/or production to lower tax countries. It's akin to the dynamic between New York, Florida, California and Texas. States, just like countries, form tax policies around a variety of factors. Florida has no income tax, but a healthy sales tax rate, which hits consumers and tourists, rather than high income individuals and corporations. New York and California are high state tax domiciles and are seeing an exodus of companies and general population, at least partially for tax avoidance purposes. Tax policy can have a lot of unintended consequences. I'm not here to defend Amazon, specifically, but I can remember when they were literally bleeding cash losing money while they built their e-commerce market. Seems hardly fair to disregard the losses they took early on and just assess taxes based on the good years. Likewise, the government uses tax policy to reward certain behaviors (paying workers more, spending money for research and development and investing in clean energy among other things). Sure, you can take that away and charge higher tax rates, but you will destroy the incentive for good behavior. I've rambled like I sometimes do, but it's way too simplistic to just say Amazon pays a relatively low tax rate. Unfortunately, that's what are media folks tend to do...focus on one tree and completely ignore the forest. Maybe tax reform is needed, but I'm skeptical when it appears that many of the methods Amazon uses to reduce their tax bill are behaviors that benefit not just Amazon and behaviors that our leaders have attempted to encourage by putting incentives in the tax code. We can debate whether or not the government and it's citizens are getting their money's worth, but it's apparent that Amazon is at least trying to do some things that our government wants them to do for the benefit of society.

  17. I think I have mentioned earlier in this thread that I bought a some land in a golf / lake community in central TN. Plan is to build there in 5 yrs or so and then have that as our centrally located base. I've been looking at travel trailers and could see us going that way. Go a little further south in winter, up north in the summer. See some National Parks. I figure I will continue to work part time as I enjoy what I do and have the flexibility to do so. Staying in IL not a very attractive option. I prefer the mountains over beaches. A Caribbean cruise can fulfill the beach itch just fine. The final part of my plan is a nice a little recession 5 years out where the cost to build drops and I can pick up that travel trailer on the cheap! I'm actually leaving Friday for 9 days of exploring the Smokies and Nashville so probably won't be too active on here for a bit.

  23. If he keeps up and builds upon what he's done early this year, then he's off the a good start of at minimum establishing himself as a legit rotation players at the NBA level. I think finally being healthy and having an entire offseason has been big for him.

  24. He'll get his chance but it will take time. I always go back to the Lickliter route. You want the P5 job and $ so badly....but your career can go sideways real quick. I think Archie will get another chance next year but to me he has to identify a region of the country that jives with his approach on/off the court. No nonsense. Grind it out...defense,etc... I mean if Jeff Capel doesn't do anything this year I could see a school/region like Pitt be very enticing to Archie.

  26. This nugget about Ben Simmons is pretty telling....I don't know if it's just this year and him trying to cause a stink and get traded or if this stuff has been going on for a long time. If it's been a long time then unfortunately these red flags are starting to add up and I'm wondering if maybe I should change my mind on the Pacers being a potential landing spot. Goorjian’s comments come after Aussie basketball icon Andrew Bogut weighed in on the “ugly” stand-off between Simmons and the 76ers. “It’s not good for either party, in my opinion. Ben’s side of things, training with your phone in your pocket, not being glued in to what’s going on,” Bogut told SEN on Wednesday. “Unfortunately, he has form doing these kinds of things; we experienced it with the national team. “There’s not going to be too much sympathy for him, but hopefully they can sort it out and both parties can have something positive to come out of it.” Source: Nic Savage @ FOXSports.com

  27. The bigger issue wasn't the number of shots (though I agree it's high) for Tatum, remember it was a 2OT game, it was his lack of recognition when he wasn't hitting from deep that he should he attacking to basket for easier shots and to get to the foul line. The Celtics were missing Al Horford and Josh Richardson, so getting them back will help a lot. But my two big concerns are the point guard situation and Ime Udoka. It's only one game and it's a marathon not a sprint, but Marcus Smart was awful last night as the starting guard. The Celtics need someone to control the pace and reign in the stars when they're playing like Tatum did. On Udoka, again it's one game, but he preached on several points of emphasis/changes all during training camp and the Celtics sucked at pretty much all of them. The defense was terrible. He preached about Tatum and Brown being playmakers and not just scorers and that didn't happen, and he preached about Tatum playing more inside and getting to the foul line and that didn't happen. Again, it's a marathon, not a sprint, but Udoka's team didn't look much like how he's been describing it.

  29. I would think that the extra 2.3 million in salary cap space the Colts just freed up by restructuring Hilton's contract would be going to a safety that is acquired via FA or a trade now that Blackmon is out and the Colts safety depth isn't good right now.

  30. Levert should be back next week. Warren is TBD. Warren is supposed to have another scan done soon to see how things are healing. Those are taking place about every 3 weeks or so.

  31. Woodley is one of two quarterbacks in NFL history, along with Ken Stabler, to have a career winning percentage above .600 while also throwing at least 10 more interceptions than touchdowns. Woodley's career record was 34–18–1 (.651), despite throwing 63 interceptions against his 48 career touchdown passes.

  32. The Pacers need Levert and Warren. They aren't athletic enough and Turner and Sabonis are still very clunky together. Brogdan, Sabonis, and Duarte were definitely bright spots. Especially if Sabonis can continue to shoot.

  33. The good from the Pacers tonight. Duarte 27 points in his debut. Sabonis 33 points Brogdon 28 points.. They hit 18 3's. The first 28 minutes the Pacers led 82-59. The bad. The last 20 minutes Charlotte won 64-40 with a 24-0 run. The rest of the team combined for 44 points. Only played 3 bench players McConnell, Lamb and Craig. So they did not hav any big guys that came off the bench.

  39. Sounds familiar...my wife is a professional photographer and with the speedy equipment obsolescence, over-populated field (everyone with a digital camera thinks they are a professional) and low barriers to entry, it's a really hard field to make money in unless you are a master marketer, very talented and willing to put in long hours. My wife is talented, but has no interest in marketing or putting in long hours. I'm guessing drone photography would have similar competitive characteristics.

  44. Sacto makes a lot of sense. They've been adamant they want to make a splash deal. Apparent;y they don't want to play Bagley so they have the reverse issue. He hasn't lived up to his potential but it is still there. He is really good offensively in the paint and improved his jump shot to at least respectable. Having doc as a coach might be really good for him. Bagley, hield and future 1.
