  5. So the first thing to come out of the Congressional hearing is an extraterrestrial message we're going to transmit in the clear that any aliens using fossil fuels might get here, but if you're depending on us, you're probably not going to be able to afford the trip back 🙂

  6. ....another topic for the slow, slow off-season: With the UFO hearings starting today I thought why not start a science thread to discuss the unexplained, the theoretical, the mysterious aspects, etc. of science. Some things on my mind...... 1. Regarding the UFO hearings, there's a great Joe Rogan interview with Neil Degrasse Tyson from a few months ago. Tyson is pretty adamant that the UFO are not aliens - he puts an emphasis on 'unexplained'. As in we don't know. And because we don't know, doesn't automatically mean that the UFO's are alien. There have been many other instances where certain UFO's, initially thought to be aliens, have been explained as weather balloons, illusions, etc. He also ponders that IF aliens had the technology to travel to this planet then they most likely wouldn't be 'seen' unless they wanted to be seen. 2. Time dilation/time travel. As a consequence to Einstein's theory of relativity, time is relative and it passes at different rates. So, the faster a person moves, the slower their time moves - relative to a person standing still (or moving at a slower speed). For example. If your walking down the aisle on an airplane to use the bathroom, you think you are walking at a speed of 2 mph, but to a person standing on the ground you are walking 402 mph (assuming the plane is moving at a speed of 400 mph). Anyway, based on that observation it is assumed that if you travel at close to the speed of light your concept of time would almost stand still relative to a person standing on Earth. Hypothetically, If one was traveling on a ship for 5 years at 99 percent the speed of light (2.5 years out and 2.5 years back), that corresponds to roughly 36 years on Earth. When the spaceship returned to Earth, the people onboard would come back 31 years in their future. An interesting fact I learned is that there is a human who has time traveled. A Russian cosmonaut spent 803 days in space, and because he rotated faster than the Earth in orbit he came back to Earth .02 seconds into the future. A question I have - If humans were to travel at a speed so fast that they could go interstellar and back, how do they avoid objects floating in space (giant rocks, meteors, etc.)? Wrapping it up - While I believe that there has to be intelligent life out there somewhere. Can they reach us? It's believed that it's impossible for an object to travel at the speed of light. And if an object (or being) could for observational purposes, taking time dilation into the equation, and assuming they'd be traveling for multiple light years, who would they report their findings back to, unless their species lived for hundreds of years???? If anybody is still reading at this point. Please share in cool facts, theories, etc.

  8. I think it was Stephen Hawking that said that if there is intelligent life out there we are better off if we don't meet them. They may look at us the way we look at bacteria. As for time travel, if it was possible, an older version of me would have already shown up to kick my ass.

  10. I don't know. Haven't thought about it except in the fact that any beings that knows how to travel through the universe at speeds greater than light would obviously have a weapon that would make the Death Star look like a water pistol and could really ruin our day... And they've probably already watched "Independence Day" numerous times and LTFAO... And to be honest, I think Congress really has bigger fish to fry right now...

  11. So this guy threatened to shoot up his school, was "evaluated" and somehow the threat and/or the evaluation never made it into the firearms background check system...The Cruz kid that killed 17 at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland Florida had an even more extensive history of mental/behavioral problems and had made comments about shooting up places before, and he passed a firearms background check as well. I strongly support the 2nd Amendment, but there's a disconnect here. Letting mentally ill people have access to firearms is nuts, and that includes parents/relatives who don't practice proper firearm storage procedures. The people who do the mental evaluations need to look at the history, look at the statements seriously, and communicate issues into the system.

  17. Dodgers and Yankees have met a whopping 11 times in World Series play... They started in 1941, then 47, 49, 52, 53 with the Yankees winning every series... The Dodgers finally beat the Yankees in 1955 winning in 7 games behind Johnny Podres 2-0 shutout... I read a book once that said in the aftermath, 3 Yankees fans in a Cadillac convertible drove around the streets of Brooklyn with a sign that said "Let the F*****s Win One." The Yankees came back and beat the Dodgers in 56, their next to last year in Brooklyn before moving to Los Angeles...

  19. As I get older, I have mellowed when it comes to my dislike of MLB teams. The only team I would actively root against would be the Cardinals. If it was Yankees/Dodgers, i would root for an epic series full of drama and tension that came down to the bottom of the 9th in Game 7. If I get that, it would not matter to me who won.

  21. From The Daily Hoosier today: "5-Star Xavier Booker put on Show for the East Coast. He quickly is becoming one of the top prospects in the Nation. Avg 23.7 pts per game 2022’ Summer Jam at Boo Williams!" Also named Outstanding Player for Jam Fest, hitting at least five 3-pointers in three of his four games (at least 15 3-pointers is how I read that). I encourage people to visit The Daily Hoosier. 22. I took the EV plunge. Traded in my Telluride for the all electric KIA EV6. https://www.kia.com/us/en/ev6 100,000 mile warranty! They compete against the Tesla, Mustang Mach E and others. As I pulled this thread back up, I realized I commented on EVs last year in this thread. So far, so good. Really happy to not be paying $4.89 / gallon (current prices here) for this vehicle. It did cost roughly $1000 to install a home charger. $450 for the GrizzleE charger, $300 for the wire and electrical supplies and $250 for the electrician. I really like the flexibility of having an electric paired with a gas vehicle. Amazed at how far KIA has come with their vehicles. I'd encourage anyone thinking of going electric to do so if they can get a deal / purchase at MSRP or better. Demand looks to keep climbing and some models (Ford Lightning) are sold out for a year or more in advance. Gas prices don't look to be dropping much over the next year either.

  23. I’m more or less neutral on religion nowadays, but my upbringing was Catholic. I was probably 9 or 10 whenever I made a room full of adults, including 2 nuns and a priest, go stone cold silent when I asked “What if God created evolution?” Still one of my proudest moments. Here’s a whole big can of worms to open, but it all depends on which version of “the” Bible, how allegorical vs literal you interpret it to be, and how accurately you believe the texts have been translated over the years. And that doesn’t take into account the acceptance of what is considered canon vs apocrypha, which took place 200-300 years after the death of Christ. I’ve said for years, my entire religious/metaphysical beliefs can be captured in a line from the movie Rudy: “Son, in my 35 years of religious study, I’ve come across only two hard, incontrovertible truths: There is a God and….I’m not him.” I believe that there are things/processes/phenomena out there that the human brain isn’t meant to understand. Whatever it is goes beyond our plane of thinking. And I’m 100% ok with that. To me personally, that’s proof that there are forces at work in the world outside of humanity. Whether one chooses to assign the name “God”, “Allah”, “Jehovah”, “Brahman”, etc is a matter of personal belief and interpretation.

  25. IMO, the Warriors look like the team to beat. I thought they would be favorites to win it if they could be healthy for the playoffs. They handled the regular season perfectly to get everyone on the court for the playoffs. I think all these last 4 teams are very close and I wouldn't be surprised by any outcome. On to the Mavs plug. The Mavs were 16-18 on New Years Eve and finished the season 36-12. They were 3-1 vs GS, 3-1 vs Memphis, 2-0 vs Boston, 1-1 vs Miami with road winning both games. Only the suns final 48 was better at 37-11. Suns were the Mavs kryptonite. They had owned the Mavs for last 3 or 4 years winning like 12 of 15 and something like 10 in row at home over Dallas. Took 7 games but that was fixed in the playoffs. What the Mavs have going for them is this was suppose to be a reset year with new regime so anything they produce after round 1 series win is icing on the cake. I think that was their expectations that Round 1 series win was the bar for a successful season. They are now playing with no pressure plus Luka lives for the pressure moments. They are more than a 1 man show and play as physical as anyone left in the playoffs. Let's go Mavs.

  28. I read it quite differently. It says "schools will share 50% of annual revenue." Not referring to NIL. Referring to TV revenue, ticket prices, concessions, advertising, everything. The Big Ten brought in $770 million in 2021. That means $335 million would be split among all athletes that year alone. That's the "doomsday" the article mentioned. Over 10 years, it will amount to 3.5 to 4 billion dollars going to players. If a conference adopts this, every player in the country will go there.

  31. Perhaps God's construct of time was different. Regarding religion, I think we should just be careful to not fill religion into the gaps of things we can't explain because of what the bible literally says. I'm not saying that your God or other's Gods aren't real or wrong, but filling in those unexplained gaps with something that in itself can't be fully explained, can hypothetically stifle further discovery. After all, the bible does use the term 'four corners of the earth'. Of course this is now taken taken figuratively, but it not too long ago it was taken literally. And those who took it literally were sure not fans of Newton. I'm just saying that there are a TON of things out there that neither the bible or science can explain. I mentioned above that it's 'believed' nobody could travel at the speed of light. But perhaps that is wrong. Perhaps our brain can't comprehend this possibility because our knowledge of physics, at this point in time, is limited. Maybe we aren't seeing a bigger picture that exists. To make this even more trippy, perhaps things we can't explain are themselves a paradox. A paradox like standing on the North Pole and not being able to definitively point to the South, because every direction is South. And East. And West.

  36. https://news.yahoo.com/think-nil-blew-college-sports-110038187.html California is trying to change the model again... "Senate Bill 1401, named the “College Athlete Race and Gender Equity Act,” cuts right to the heart of the collegiate model and the ideals of amateurism. SB 1401 would require California schools to share 50% of annual revenues in football and men’s and women’s basketball with the athletes, initiating a new era of “pay for play” — and what college sports leaders fear would be a doomsday scenario for athletic departments that currently use profits from revenue sports to fund their non-revenue sports programs."

  41. I think Brunson produces more when Luka is out like the 41 vs Utah. I watch all their games and he is just a good consistent offensive player every night whether Luka plays or not. He is also a catalyst in the team culture. Brunson defense is pretty bad but he is probably one highest IQ guys in the league. So he will draw a lot of charges and leanred from the master of filling passing lanes (Kidd) to be pretty good at that in the team defense concept. It took all of 3.5 years for me to warm up to the slow footed PG but I finally bought in to him. This group has a ton of cohesion. Brunson, Dodo, and Luka are all quite close. Dodo (DFS) is maybe the most underrated player in the league. He leads the league in percentage of defending the other teams best players. Let's go Mavs.

  42. Agree on the CP3 angle. He fell off a cliff after Game 2. Have to give a ton of credit to Jason Kidd. Not a big Kidd fan, but I think he made a smart move to become an assistant for a couple of seasons after flopping in Brooklyn and Milwaukee with no experience. For CP3, I think for now we can stop the talk of him making any kind of leap in the PG rankings ahead of Isiah, Oscar, Magic, Steph (gets categorized as PG), etc. But, that was an impressive performance by Dallas, Luka and Kidd. It will be a very interesting WCF. You have the ascending Mavs and Luka going head-to-head with the grizzled veterans. I tend to lean Warriors, but I haven't been overly impressed with them so far in the playoffs. Steph, while still great, almost looks a step slower. Edit: Just looked it up and Steph has his lowest FG% and 3pt% of his career this season by a wide margin. I'm a Steph fan, but we may be seeing his decline starting.

  43. I know this for certain personally. My NBA talent evaluator skills are worthless. Looking at guys like Luka and even Brunson....just never thought it would translate to the NBA or translate to this level of success. I feel like Luka is good for 35 every single night....and because of that Brunson's production has doubled. Happy for the Mavs and Cuban. One other thing. Forgot the Heat were still in playoffs. Been at least a week since they've been on the court.
