I don't like it but outside of nobody showing up I do believe it's the only way to send a message to the athletic department. That and some interesting chants that I think should be directed Buckner and company.

I would love for someone to sit right behind Buckner at a Pacers game with some creative signs.

I am not sure we are disagreeing...? My intended point was HS recruiting is not the be all end all any longer.  I used a crude reference of 50/50 of portal / HS, and sure maybe it's 30/70, but the broader point was that we all need to change our thinking.

and I'm a Woodson out guy, for the record, just saying I think some (not all) are applying a framework of past roster building to current realities, when it just doesn't fit

I know you're not a Woodson guy, but I also don't think we are saying the same thing. I think you have to have the foundation of your team built through high school recruiting. If you look at any of the teams we want to be, that's what they're doing.

Let's be clear. Wheaver his failings at Indiana, Mike Woodson is an accomplished man. He has spent a lifetime playing and coaching the game of basketball, with the relationships and reputation that develop from such a career. That, and his alumni status, are why he was hired at Indiana, not BLM or DEI. The fans using those terms as perjoratives are doing so only because of the color of his skin, and I find that far uglier than any number of basketball games Woodson could ever lose.

While I agree with the second half of your post, there is a lot to debate about how accomplished he is from a basketball coaching standpoint.

I'll just say this, if IU hires an NBA assistant coach, that has a below .500 career record as a head coach and hasn't had a head coaching job in 7 years, hasn't sniffed getting hired as a HC in the NBA since then, and even had a two season stint that they weren't an NBA assistant.... I think we'd all riot.

So we can attribute whatever we want to why Woodson was hired, but let's be crystal clear it was absolutely not what he has accomplished as a basketball coach that was the driving force of that decision.

Not to mention the Cooks and a few others. Truly insane to me (and it's not just this year) for decades we can't get this crap straight.

100%. I was just going the basketball angle, but we have several BILLIONAIRE boosters, and then a ton more 8 and 9 figure millionaire boosters.

To expand on your point, I don't think we all even fully realize what a weapon and difference make Ware is at the 5 spot in college basketball, and IU has completely mismanaged the roster around him.

Oh my goodness, Ware is the ideal modern 5. I would take him over any 5 we've ever had, every single year for the rest of time. His skillset is completely perfect for what you want in a modern big man.

I think they should get some input but they shouldn't be calling the shots on the final decision.

I think we are letting the wrong NBA owner booster have a lot of influence.

Like how crazy is it that we have TWO NBA owners as boosters and can't even consistently compete for top 5 in our conference.

The problem is how hard did he try? He chose a trouble maker in X over a guy who would come in and control everything (who wanted to be here btw) and was the pure scorer we needed in love. He didn’t promise Knecht playing time yet when a guy is in the portal and 20 teams are after him saying I can’t promise you minutes is the most idiotic thing you can say to a kid who is transferring to boost his nba chances. If he would’ve put his ego aside for 1 month during recruiting our team would be wayyyyyy different and Liam wouldn’t have decommited.

I was thinking about that last night. What if we had landed Love, Knecht, and kept Bates....

I'm of course assuming we actually change styles too, but a lineup of Love, Galloway, Bates, Knecht, and Ware would be the most unstoppable offense in the country if we played the right way.

Not sure. I don't want to oversell the significance of the timing, but it also can't be a coincidence.

Sounds like there had been rumblings for awhile on this though.

When I watch our team, I've often been puzzled as to why a player like McNeely would choose IU in the first place.

    Never really made sense.

My theory is he waited this long because he liked the guys, the campus, facilities, NIL, etc so he was holding out hope something would change either stylistically and then eventually just a new coach but keep all the stuff he likes. When that didn't happen his hand was forced.

Again, just a theory but it's the best I can figure.

Can you imagine a front court of Reneau, Mbako and McNeely, with Sparks off the bench with this coaching staff?  They’d give up 85 a night with a ton of foul trouble to boot.   The guards will be better but you would need a new assistant to develop them.  You’d also need both offensive and defensive coordinator types to help fix the schematic problems at both ends.

You also need a director of analytics….badly.   Deal with efficiency on both ends, get rid of long twos, gear toward NET, figure out metrics on where players succeed or need to improve, combinations that work and don't.   The AD can lead on this when coach, BOT and boosters are lost.  When the coach is openly pointing to wins and losses and is befuddled by the way metrics impact the college game, you have to micromanage him.   The horrendous analytics early in the year tended to be money in predicting the problems the team ended up having.  There are some real lessons on getting in front of analytics.

We need some real vision and energy injected into the program.  Only Dolson can do it.

Good news is we don't have to worry about that front court giving up points.

I think the mods should lock this thread and move us to the Woody is returning thread.  Too much too track 😂.

Also I really like what someone said in the transfer thread, extra money doesn’t solve the transfer portal.  It’s a ready, aim, shoot approach.  Other schools have just as much money, the coach and structure are the key.

Still think we should lock this?

The first foul was as cheap as they come.  98.3% of the players in the country do not get called for that.

Yes, but refs study film and when you commit a lot of fouls and then make stupid faces when you do it, they call more fouls.

Malik doesn't do himself or his team any favors the majority of the time.
