Ok, can you tell me what was said or done that drew the first tech? Because no one else has done that. At all. All i have seen is a lot of assumptions based on … well, nothing really. People were making assumptions based on a clip I posted that was before the tech was even called, though. Do you think that makes sense?

I'm really not. I mean, look at these responses, every single one of them. All emotional, cursing, capital letters, and none having any real facts as to what was said or done to cause the tech. None. You've got people making rash conclusions from a clip I posted before the tech was even called. I mean, it's entirely possible that this ref has it out for IU. I grant you that, because I was in school for Ted Valentine in the 92 Final Four against Duke. It's also possible that this stuff seems to come up on this board all the time, and it's extremely rare to see a game where there aren't complaints about the officiating, especially in losses. We lost a difficult game, but we lost that game because we played 20 minutes of terrible basketball, and lost our composure on a call that might not even have been a missed call. I would say that some of you are working really, really hard to excuse that poor play.

Does anyone know what was actually said for the tech to be called? Because if you don't, you're just assuming things. The clip I posted is before the tech was called, so I'm not sure how anyone can conclude it was right or wrong based on that. I do agree that the McCaffrey duo should have both gotten techs in our game, and that there seem to be inconsistencies with these situations.

That's an interesting point. Here's the rule book info on it and link to it. It doesn't seem to specify defensive or offensive in this section, so I'm guessing these are universal. Sorry about the formatting, but I'm lazy. Section 15. Basket Interference and Goaltending Art. 1. It is a violation to commit basket interference or goaltending. Art. 2. Basket interference. a. Basket interference occurs when a player: 1. Touches the ball or any part of the basket while the ball is on or within the basket. If the touching of the basket involves contact with the net only, the official must determine if the touching had any effect on the ball which would rise to the level of basket interference; 2. Touches the ball while any part of it is within the cylinder that has the ring as its lower base; 3. Reaches through the basket from below and touches the ball before it enters the cylinder; 4. Pulls down a movable ring so that it contacts the ball before the ring returns to its original position; and 5. Causes the basket or backboard to vibrate when the ball is on or within the basket or the backboard and/or is on or in the cylinder. b. The cylinder is the imaginary geometric figure that has the ring as its base and is formed by the upward extension of that ring. c. The ball shall be considered to be within the basket when any part of the ball is below the cylinder and the level of the ring. 92 RULE 9 / Violationsand Penalties d. A player may have a hand legally in contact with the ball, when this contact continues after the ball enters the cylinder or when, during such action, the player touches or grabs the basket. Art. 3. Race takes a step before contact. Is that enough? It's a pretty subjective call, and the NU fans didn't like it at all, so I'd say it depends on who you're rooting for.

Clearly? Some of you guys need to strip away emotion and look at these plays objectively. Buie is set defensively, well outside the arc, Race hasn’t left his feet. I get that this is just a snap, and it’s a bang bang play, but it easily could have been called the other way.

Just an FYI for those saying that one play doesn't matter that much, the missed goaltending call was around 15 minutes left in the second half. We had made a small run to start the half, NU had answered back with a 3 to shut it down, their lead was at 17, that bucket would have pushed it to 19. Instead, no call, we get to run out in transition with numbers, JHS hits a 3 to cut it to 14, and the crowd is back into it. C'mon, guys. You know better than to discount momentum in a situation like that. That play was huge for us. As for the first half TOs, first possession, bad pass by TJD, second possession, bad pass by JHS, third possession (I think?) Race gets a block call on what looked like a pretty obvious offensive foul, a few possessions later, JHS loses the dribble with no one around him into the backcourt for a TO, a few possessions later, bad pass by Bates. I mean, I could argue that the phantom foul call on Bates was actually a blessing in disguise because it got him off the court - he was awful in the first half. We had 8 TOs in the first 11 minutes or something like that, and the majority of those weren't from fouls not being called, it was just terrible basketball on our part.

The goaltending was in the second half at a key point in our comeback. I just re-watched the first half, and I’m just not seeing it. One of our early possessions, i thought Race should have been called for an offensive foul and they called it a block. The foul on Bates, admittedly a bad call, was immediately followed by a moving screen call on NU that had to be a make up call. I thought things were called pretty evenly when the infamous travel happened, and we all know what happened after that. I’m not even sure it was a travel - good angle on the replay, his pivot foot didn’t really move, but it tips over on the side of his shoe. Not sure if that’s a travel or not, and then our bench gave away 4 points because they can’t stfu. I did think they missed a couple of fouls on TJD later in the first half, but i also saw a bunch of terrible TOs, bad shot selection, missing multiple wide open 3s (including JHS not even finding rim on one), multiple offensive rebounds given up, and leaving NU absolutely wide open on at least half a dozen 3s that they missed (can anyone explain why we were going under the screens?). IMO, we were very fortunate we weren’t down 30 at the half, and most of that was of our own doing, not the refs. I’m also well aware I’m in the minority with this opinion.

I’m not sure why you think people don’t understand your point. I get what you are saying, i just don’t agree that it was that egregious, especially when people are conveniently leaving out calls that went our way - the missed call on TJD’s clear goaltending was at a big point in our comeback in the second half, for example, and I’m sure there are others. Again, we got two Ts on a missed traveling call in the first half - that’s ridiculous. I’m just not hip on blaming the refs when you play 20 minutes of terrible basketball and can’t keep your composure during it, especially when they missed a pretty blatant one in our favor in a key moment in the second half. And as for the “problem” with officiating being terrible in general, or favoring the home team, this isn’t new. I mean, we play in a place our opponents call the “Hall of Calls.”

Refs miss calls and can struggle to find a balance early in games just like players and coaches. Smart teams don’t get multiple technicals over a missed call, especially in the first half. You actually think the refs were conspiring against us, like there was some nefarious plot to get us off our game early, instead of us constantly being out of position on defense throughout the first half? Yah, I’m going to bed now. Y’all have at it with the victim stuff.

Jeez, enough with the complaints about officiating. Yeah, they missed a travel call, but refs miss calls. Getting multiple Ts and giving up 4 points because of that is just stupid and undisciplined. Also, in the second half they missed a pretty obvious goaltending on TJD, and no ref is going to call an offensive foul on that last possession, especially if he doesn’t extend the arm. We lost because we played like complete garbage in the first half, not because of the refs. I mean, even in the second half, Kopp hit the side of the backboard on an open 3 pointer, and JHS hit the top of the backboard on an easy alley oop in another key situation. Good comeback in the second half, and’s not a big deal losing this game if we take care of business on Saturday

That's interesting. That crowd was morgue-ish for significant time last night - even the announcers were commenting that they felt like they should be whispering. I'd expect a bit more rabid one Saturday, though.

Some guys just lose their minds when they get into any sort of organized competition: Rutgers had two student-athletes earn the Big Ten Outstanding Sportsmanship Award on Wednesday. Men's basketball student-athlete Paul Mulcahy and women's tennis student-athlete Maya Jacobs earned the accolade. Mulcahy recently completed his sophomore season as a point guard on the men's basketball team, leading the Scarlet Knights to the program's first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1991 and first NCAA Tournament victory since 1983. Here's a funny aside for this thread - I've heard some fans calling our duo Miller Kopp and Killer Mopp (Gallo), which I think is pretty hilarious.

Pikiell will likely have to address it in some form - the kid deleted his Twitter, I'm assuming due to a lot of backlash, he's had some issues with anger and some cheap behavior on the court before, and he's one of their best players. Guess it depends on their relationship, but I would imagine a coach would at minimum have a chat with him about it.

Nice W. Some things to clean up, and the second half got a little too close for comfort, but RU is a tough out, especially for us. Lot of good things in that W ... a couple of couch observations: - Man, we all love Race and what he has sacrificed for this program. But, I'm a firm believer in having guys that can shoot the 3 well taking those shots, and he's just plain terrible at it this year. Take out the 4-7 game against Arizona, and he's 4-27 on the season (that's a whopping 15%), and has hit one of his last nine. He's also simply not even coming close to making them at this point, and just doing the defense a favor when he shoots them. Also, late in the game he had a nice mismatch with Mulcahy on him in the post, gets a nice feed where he's fairly low on the block, and he ends up taking a 13-15 foot fadeaway off of one foot? I realize he's still doing a lot of good things, and brings leadership and experience to the court, and he's just a great kid overall so it sucks banging on him, but it's just very difficult watching him play sometimes. - Again IMO from my couch observations, JHS rarely goes straight up for a jumper. I feel like he watched a lot of Kobe, and takes a lot of jumpers that are off balance or where he's kicking a leg out or whatever. We were at the Maryland game, and he was doing it all night, even on shots where he had no defender near him. I'm sure he'll need to do that at the next level, but most times he doesn't need to do it at this one. - Finally, Galloway is awesome, and no real complaints on anything he's doing out there, but how did a coach's son end up with such an awful looking shot technically speaking? He hits them at a really nice clip, but it looks like he's in pain every time he shoots. /ramble

Re: storming the court, I mean, is there ever a time when it is ok to storm if you can’t do it when you knock of your fiercest rival when they are ranked #1?
