Just getting caught up here... The wildings in Chicago have been going on for years. 3 straight nights this past weekend. Seems to be the worst when the weather starts to get nice. Will last all summer. This is the main factor why Walmart closed some of the Chicago stores. Large groups would just walk in a carry out what they could. WMT lost tens, if not hundreds of millions in Chicago as a result. Chicago is (has been) going downhill and I don't see that changing (especially with the new anti police mayor).

https://cwbchicago.com/ is a great website for timely news. They often include videos.

Here's a recap and reactions from the Mayors- https://chicagodefender.com/mayor-elect-brandon-johnson-issues-statement-on-weekend-violence/

Appreciate the context. We have a fair amount of that here. And always worse in the summer.

How about the 16 year old African American boy who was shot by an 80 year old white guy because the kid rang his door bell.  He was sent to pick up his younger brothers but went to the wrong address accidentally.  He's in critical condition in a Kansas City hospital.

Man, the photos of him with his siblings is really heartbreaking. I can’t even imagine what the family is going through.

5 people shot and killed Friday night through early Sunday morning in Louisville.

2 died and several others wounded when someone fired into a crowd in a park.

Another shooting killed two men and injured a woman.

Yet another shooting killed a man in a common bar and restaurant district.

A 17 year old boy was shot while riding a bike, but is expected to survive.

Another man was beaten with a tire iron and is not expected to live.

Louisville has totally gone off the rails from a violence standpoint.

Geez, that’s horrible. I only saw the mention of the two near the previous shooting.

I just looked up the gun homicide rate on the CDC for Kentucky - 20.8!! (Per 100,000). I know some people think NY is dangerous, but we are at 5.3.

Not sure why the race matters. And 16-18 yr old me did a lot of stupid too.

There are black kids in small towns that get away with stuff too, that have rules stretched for them too. I teach one of them. I can't begin to list the amount of things the school corp has done for that student, not stuff they do for other kids, that's for sure.

I also have gobs of white kids, who grow up poor as dirt, or sexually abused, or in and out of foster care, or have parents in prison---THAT DON'T GO AROUND VANDALIZING CARS/PROPERTY.

And there are plenty of black kids that grow up dirt poor, or sexually abused, in and out of foster care, etc WHO DON’T GO AROUND VANDALIZING PROPERTY.

If you think race doesn’t matter, I can’t help you. It absolutely matters.

If you are 16+ and you do the types of things they are doing in Chicago, they should be arrested and tried as adults.

I just had a student sent up for 10 years for 4 arson incident, among other things. You can be young, you can be inexperienced, but at the end of the day.. you are still responsible for your own actions, and imo, these individuals are well old enough to understand the difference in right and wrong.

16-18 year old me did a LOT of stupid stuff. But I was a white kid in a small town, so it all worked out for me.

But yes, your point stands. Some of these kids are not going to make it in society.

I do think it’s funny that these kids are old enough to know right and wrong, but wealthy white collar criminals and politicians (who had EVERY advantage) can claim to not know better and nothing happens.

I’ve got no answers or solutions honestly, and not giving near enough time to kids like people like you. So, I will bow out of this conversation. Appreciate what do, but there are not enough people like you for so many of these kids.

  6. Did I see that there was ANOTHER multiple shooting in Louisville over the weekend? And four teens killed at a birthday party in Alabama?

Barely a blip on the radar, I guess b/c it’s so common.

Saw a REALLY good post over the weekend positing that if politicians were the ones being killed (instead of our children, who are apparently expendable) then there would definitely be change.

Heck, these a$$hole politicians will push for guns everywhere - EXCEPT many of their events where they are not allowed. Hypocrites.

    Chicago seems fun.

"However, it is not constructive to demonize youth who have otherwise been starved of opportunities in their own communities"

but... when your Mayor Elect is willing to say things like the above.... geeeeesh. Where is the accountability? The only thing those children are starved of is mentorship.

I tend to agree with that statement (but don’t know the context, so could be very ignorant), but yes there needs to be some accountability. I’m not okay with writing off kids b/c of their lack of support and opportunity.

There are entire segments of our society that we have decided to write off b/c they don’t look or act like us.

    This is pretty funny..

“The paradox would be that, overcome with panic, we believe we are just America’s followers,” Macron said in the interview. “The question Europeans need to answer … is it in our interest to accelerate [a crisis] on Taiwan? No. The worse thing would be to think that we Europeans must become followers on this topic and take our cue from the U.S. agenda and a Chinese overreaction,” he said."

Maybe the US should have said the same thing in 1940...

Macron has been screwing the pooch on all fronts for a bit. Not a fan of his.

They handed out disposable ponchos. We were in the first row that didn't get one.  I did catch some debris. My wife didn't know who he was. It was fun watching her discover the sledg o matic. 🤣 I  tried to talk her in to going up there when he brought a cake out.

Dying laughing typing this, b/c there’s only a certain subsection of America that will really get this.

Missouri and Georgia are the worst with the billboards. Missouri has so many XXX boards and Georgia is all about the me love you long time "massages".

I don’t know why we allow that BS. Every time I come back here from somewhere else I realize how much of sh#thole country we have allowed ourselves to be at the bosom on advertising and the almighty dollar.

I bet you'd find poverty is directly associated with both of those. It is with unintentional firearm deaths and probably vehicles too. Safety isn't cheap. Old cars and Saturday night specials are though.

I bet you are right. I’ve not posted the death rates USA map. But it is DIRE. Poor states with no investment in health or infrastructure are the early death winners. Ding, ding, ding. But as long as those fat, old men in the statehouses are coddled and cared for, we are all good.

I think this is a good idea

"The 9mm Biofire Smart Gun locks the moment it leaves your hand and cannot be fired unless an authorized user picks it back up."

Maybe eventually retrofit all firearms with the technology...

YES. If we pretend to care about our kids, let’s do this. Let’s also put in speed limiters on automobiles on residential streets. They do it for mopeds here, why not cars (sure, I know ‘Merica and FREEDUMB)?

The two reasons the US life expectancy are plummeting against the rest of the world are mainly for two reasons - guns and cars. Both fixable with some balls.

    Oh, I'm with you there...

I wish they'd just give you a shot that knocks you out, and then stack everybody like cordwood until the trip is over...

Oh god yes. The dumbasses in boarding group 9 who are already standing in line to board when the pre-boarding starts. “Have you people never flown before?” Your anxiety and impatience will not make things go quicker.

I've been thinking about taking a trip using a train.  I can get tickets from Indy to Burlington, VT for cheaper than driving.  I've wanted to see Vermont or New Hampshire for a long time.

I can sleep and read on a train and I've been through PA and Ohio enough times already.

Vermont and New Hampshire are both so nice. Vermont in particular is beautiful country. The first time we drove up into Vermont it took me so long to figure out why it ws so beautiful and calming - they don’t have billboards or huge advertising signs roadside. NONE.

You kind of get numb to just how ugly the US is when you are on the road b/c of the constant barrage of ads and worthless signs, so it took me some time to realize what was different.

  14. I hate flying and the rigamarole around flights so much. I’m not scared of them or anything. I just hate the lining up, the waiting, the people, and getting back and forth from the airport. If I can drive instead or take a train, I will always choose that.

When we flew home from London a couple of weeks ago, we had left our car at JFK. We landed at 2pm and I finally parked our car at home at 7pm. JFK is 10 miles from our house but we had to drive into Manhattan to pick up our dog from the sitter, and then get back to Brooklyn. This ended up being in rush hour and literally every foot of movement was total bumper to bumper with honking. Of course it took over an hour to find a parking place.

Getting home from the airport took exactly one hour less than our flight from London. So, I guess it’s not the actual flying - it’s all the crap that goes with it.

I have to agree with these people killing themselves.  I think they want to die but can't do it so they do something to trigger a police response.  I also think they're in pain and want others to feel the way they do.  My only request is they do it cleanly.

I had an uncle commit suicide. My aunt got past it after a few years.

Had an uncle I really loved commit suicide when I was about twelve. He was a Vietnam Vet and pretty troubled, but really had a good connection with me as a kid. I think he felt safe with me or something.

Anyway, he rigged up a hose to the tailpipe of his car in his garage. That was a very bad scene and was really my first understanding of death.
