  1. No need, have been there a few times myself and have many friends and colleagues who are Russian. I also picked IU Bloomington as a school b/c of their Russian history (my major) and Russian literature (my life long love). I’m pretty comfortable in my Russian knowledge these days, but appreciate the offer. And I’m honestly not trying to be an ass, but you’ve now told me how to read the news and touted your ministry trips to Russia in the last hour. I have no doubt you are very knowledgeable on the subject, but I’m good.
  2. Jesus, dude. It’s the New York Times. If they get it wrong, they will be correcting it in the next day’s paper. It’s not like it’s Tucker Carlson hanging on to Vlad’s jockstrap, and then moving on when the wind changes direction.
  3. The reports have already been confirmed. Are you trying to say that Russia is not hitting civilian targets? The NYT actually reported on the Snake Island thing already - they reported it as a myth. https://www.nytimes.com/2022/03/03/technology/ukraine-war-misinfo.html
  4. As of today yes, but we’ve had others who were still praising him - even recently. It was always disconcerting to me to see that.
  5. Reports in the NYT that they have hit a maternity hospital in the south of Ukraine. What absolute trash. I think as Vlad the Impotent starts to get more desperate, we’ll see more of this kind of stuff. At least it seems like our politicians are mostly falling out of love with Vlad now. Never understood kissing up to a dictator like that.
  6. Exactly, the people that don’t have the luxury of choice.
  7. “Part hippie, a little redneck, I’m always a suspect…” Yep, love it.
  8. Sorry Six, I didn’t mean to overlook your post when I was responding to Flynn. It’s tough. I’m not convinced EV cars are there yet. Charging stations are an issue, like cost that you pointed out. But, a large pickup truck is about the same cost and then you have the INSANE annual fuel costs. Alternative transportation seems key from my perspective, but I’ve always enjoyed the bus, trains, and biking. Even in Bloomington and Indy I used the bus. When I’m in Europe, it always amazes me how happy they seem to get around on trains and bikes. And they seem so healthy and happy compared to us. Am aware that it’s different in every area/community, but we don’t seem to be very smart when it comes to transport.
  9. Ha, if you look, you’ll notice I only took the time to reply to you even though I know we are far apart on this. It’s b/c I respect and enjoy your thoughts on here. I grew up dependent on my car to get me the hour back and forth to work. Gas is freaking important if you need it to get to work. I can’t count the number of times I had to pawn my watch or donate plasma to buy gas when I was a young man. It unfortunately happened a lot back in the day. But, I have spent a lot of time, effort, and money so I don’t have to be reliant on gas now. I know that I’m lucky in that respect, and that it sets me apart from many on here. And I also know that good people like you know that we are different, but also the same.
  10. Sure, it’s in synthetics and many plastics, but roughly 50% of our oil goes to just gasoline in the US. Almost 70% of our usage is the transportation industry. And shocker, the US has a grossly outsized consumption when you compare us to the rest of the world. I would never claim that we can be 100% oil free. But we don’t have to guzzle it like drunken frat boys at their first kegger.
  11. You thinking I’m making a false argument does not make it so. If you think oil is the solution to “so many of our problems,” then you don’t even have an argument.
  12. Great, they will be jacked up having their coach back. So sick of having to “make a run in the B1G tournament” to be considered for the NCAAT. Exhausting.
  13. Probably a lot, but I don’t see us having the will to quit guzzling oil. We are too shortsighted and lazy. I think it’s idiotic to kiss up to these countries, b/c we can’t quit oil. But I’m sure we will continue our dependence.
  14. You definitely don’t want to get me started on the auto industry and how they pulled a fast one on the entire country with politicians happily pocketing the profits. I enjoy walking, riding my bike, and taking the subway while telling the car/gas/oil industry to f*ck off. I also realize that I couldn’t say that if I lived in most places, but our lifestyle is by design. It’s nice not knowing or caring about oil or gas prices. Gas could be a dollar or twenty dollars a gallon and I wouldn’t know or really care. We are lucky enough to only fill our tank when we drive to MD a handful of times each year.
  15. It certainly is a problem with investments and our dependance on their oil. We are so so deep into our addiction that we can’t sanction their oil. I’ve a firm believer in moving manufacturing back to the US. We were once a nation of inventors and makers, we should be able to make and buy things here with less business overseas.
  16. Yep, the tweet and story was updated that they sold their position right before the invasion and only lost $3.2M in the position. Still not great, but way better.
  17. It’s INSANE that a US state’s teachers union was conned into being invested that deep in a Russian bank.
  18. “State of Kentucky's Teachers Retirement System was the second-largest shareholder for Sberbank of Russia (The largest bank in Russia). Their position dropped 95% in value from $13MM to $778K” https://twitter.com/mkt_sentiment/status/1499585220001304576?s=21 Ouch.
  19. Wasn’t clear, but I would hate to have all of our savings in rubles right now.
  20. I know it’s crazy, but I wouldn’t be surprised (at all) if we walked out of there with a win.
  21. I saw a short interview with a Russian stockbroker yesterday on Reddit, and he looked near suicidal. Just dead eyes and flat affect, couldn’t even act like he wasn’t totally drained by this.
  22. We eventually stopped trying, b/c we thought our neighbors would think we were abusing him.
  23. Can’t beat Rutgers at home on Senior Night for a tourney bid. Terrible.
