  1. LSU won a title under both Les Miles & Ed Orgeron. Saban won the won before those two. The SEC is ridiculous. Just ridiculous. I was thinking about this the other day, just consider the coaches in the SEC West. Nick Saban - has won multiple national titles at two different programs Jimbo Fisher - won a title at Florida St. Ed Orgeron - won a title at LSU & remember he was a part of those USC championship teams Mike Leach - considered one of the best football minds Lane Kiffin - has coached USC, Tennessee & the Raiders before learning under Saban. Bryan Harsin - new kid but did really well at Boise St. Sam Pittman - building a lot of momentum down at Arkansas and that's just the SEC West.
  2. This x1000. If this turns out to be true the program is dead. Never would have guessed this in a million years. I guess wait and see, but this is simply jaw dropping.
  3. Yeah I've worked with 100s of these types of guys and that's not the way it works. Getting a bunch of former IU guys to restore the glory of "ol' IU" isn't anything remotely on their minds or is it continuing the legacy of RMK. Would they honor that tradition and speak it with reverence? Absolutely, but any guy worth his salt isn't thinking about any of the things that has happened to Indiana. All he's thinking about is how he could put his stamp on Indiana and take it to heights never seen before. That's the crux in many ways with some of these potential coaches. Can they take Indiana higher? The bar is so high. Duke will face the same issues at some point in time. I'm not saying Duke won't get their choice selection, but whoever comes in next isn't going to recreate Krzyzewski's success (at least it's highly unlikely) and that will be a problem. Ego is the biggest factor here. To me this is why Lewis makes some sense even though I'm still on board thinking it's Stevens. Bruce Pearl comes to mind. He's not going to be hired, but that type of ego is what it takes. Indiana needs to embrace the role of the villain. If the national media these past couple of weeks haven't taught us that then we'll never understand the true rhythms. You'd sell IU a lot better if you proposed that role as well. We'll see......
  4. I don't know. Do the Dolphins fan base really care about what Saban did?
  5. Not that it's worth anything, but I'm hearing Stevens now too from some colleagues well connected to the Butler pipeline. Have also heard it from some other guys through general talk in the sports performance/psychology network. But then again, these were the same things I was hearing from the same people the first time before BS said no. I was loathe to bring it to the board just because we have been down that road before, but......here we are again! The only real concrete info I have is that I've spoken to a couple of ADs and they both feel the Stevens to IU scenario makes so much sense that it's hard to envision him not coming back to Indiana. Then again, they've been pretty consistent with those thoughts for awhile now although neither know Stevens personally. Here's hoping.
  6. I've thought about this too. I'm not saying BS is coming to IU but I'm in the camp that believes there was an awful lot of smoke and things fell apart. But maybe they didn't. Even with all the conspiracy things out of the way, Boston is toast this year and everyone knows it. That's 8 seasons as HC without a title. It's NEVER happened in Celtics history. I don't follow the NBA enough to know but is the trajectory of Boston in the next 2-3 years one in which they win titles? Are they better than Philly? Milwaukee? Brooklyn? Heck KenPom has Indiana & Atlanta as better than Boston as I write this. Then there is the West. Are they going to be better than Denver, LAC, LAL, Utah, Phoenix, Portland or even Dallas. Like I say the leash can't be "Hey, BS is our guy & we'll continue on for 20 years no matter what." His seat is warm (at least by media/fans standards) and it's only going to get hotter. Brad is a smart guy. If he hasn't applied game theory to his own situation then I'd be shocked. Maybe he really does want to be an NBA executive. If so then all this is moot, but if he really does want to be in coaching, then the timing makes sense to jump unless he's 100% invested in being an NBA coach for the rest of his career. I guess it could later too, but right now the timing makes sense. My ultimate nightmare though is BS passes up IU, we move on, and in 2-3 years, the Celtics haven't make a run, BS's seat is ON FIRE and he decides to go back to college when Duke or UNC open up. Yikes.
  7. https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/31109722/marcus-smart-says-boston-celtics-recently-held-team-meeting-spur-turnaround This article struck me as somewhat interesting. I know we've all pretty much moved on from this conversation given what Stevens himself has said, but if he's only told Dolson "no" once.........Still think there was entirely too much smoke to dismiss this outright.
  8. I'm with you. I had quite a few sources with this one through my profession and I'm very curious as to what exactly happened.
  9. Agree 100%. That's what I mean though. Those organizations would love to have him but it's an odd look in that those teams are never necessarily going to be relevant due to market size or whatever or that star players don't want to play there & the NBA is a very players driven league. I'm just saying, Stevens could look back over at a 20-year NBA coaching career and not see very much in regards to legacy.
  10. This speaks to my point as well. Let's say Boston wants Stevens gone & Stevens still is so "I'm all in on the NBA". His "I'm a Masshole and a Patriots fan for life." How does that play when his next job is coaching the Timberwolves, Grizzlies, Magic or Kings? It makes him look....odd?
  11. here is the problem I have with this and i trust your knowledge of the celtics and feel for the NBA, but when does the leash end? Stevens is in his 8th year & the Celtics just lost by double digits at home to the Kings. I know one game in the NBA is virtually meaningless, but it's still a bad look. Boston isn't going to win the NBA championship this season. I guess you can never say never but odds are long. Is that different next year? Maybe maybe not, but then that's Stevens' 9th year with no titles? Each year that passes by, the emphasis on championships gets greater and greater and greater. Not saying I agree with it, but at what point does the Boston media or Boston ownership say, "The results don't exactly match the hype."? Ainge & Co. love the guy that much they are willing to let him go 10-12 years and see what happens?
  12. One thing I learned REALLY fast is that I had to block both Scott & IUFLA. The board has been exceptionally more pleasant.
  13. Scott, i would think this because I do this stuff for a living and like a previous poster wrote, coaches don't think like you. here is why I would think that: When you get to that level, it's 99.9999% ego driven. you want to fire a guy like michael jordan or kobe bryant up, challenge his manhood. challenge his ego. they simply won't back down. and it can be over the smallest of things. if you don't understand this then I don't know what to tell you. if you don't think brad stevens works this way then, well, you just are wrong. bob knight was an egomaniacal narcissist. it's what made him a 3-time national champion and an olympic gold medal winner. stevens comes off corporate. great. he's a good guy. I've spent a decent amount of time with stevens. he's an incredible guy, but to think he's not run by ego is crazy. coaches MUST have that type of swagger to coach the Boston Celtics. It's the Celtics for crying out loud. so you force his hand. you ask him to chase legendary status. you sell him on being the true heir to RMK. You challenge him to chase immortality. if he turns it down then fine. he's not the guy IU wants. maybe he thinks he can chase that in Boston and has a better shot at it. I don't agree. This is why Stevens is in play more than people realize. It's naïve to think Alabama didn't sell Saban on the above and at the end of the day Saban thought he could chase harder at Alabama than he could with the Dolphins. And as far as "looking at this job the way we fans do", man it's Indiana. It's a sleeping giant. Everyone knows that.
  14. Offer Stevens $9.3MM publicly. Tell him it's what Nick Saban makes at Alabama. Force him to admit he doesn't want to chase legendary status. If he says no, he's not the coach we think he is.
  15. I have sources that some would consider fairly deep. This post isn't far off with one caveat. From what I've heard/who I've talked to, IU would be a foregone conclusion if the IU admin made the play and sold Stevens on the job and he was convinced the university/administration was behind him and also paid him accordingly. Again, I keep alluding to the fact the IU basketball/Alabama football comparison isn't that far off. Stevens won't go back to Butler. That's not even in the equation. There is no denying the deep affection Stevens has for Butler, but that has lot to do with what he accomplished, first opportunity to coach and all the stuff that goes on with it. "Coaches don't think like fans or former players" is telling. It's why Stevens is more in play than people realize. I still think it's a long shot, but it's more of a possibility than people usually give it credit for, but the fact that coaches don't think like fans/players is the very reason Stevens is in play even if a long shot.
