Coach Mike Woodson Megathread
unexpectedflash replied to IU247's topic in General Basketball Discussion
Tbf I think Mike has been set up to succeed with Dolson running things. I don't know how things would go if Glass was still in charge. -

I definitely think he should've hired Mike Lewis instead of Roberts two years ago. He might still have a job if he did. Lewis was the offensive coordinator for some of those Nebraska teams that could actually score. He would've been exactly what Archie needed. -

I don't think there's any chance Bennett comes but the offense he runs is different than Archie's. They're consistently a top 15 offensive efficiency team. If you watched them this year, they played a lot of 5 out offenses. They're really slow but it's not the crowded mess that Archie runs. They are always very good shooting teams and a high percentage of their shots come from 3. It's not a modern offense in terms of pace but it is in terms of shot selection. -

No thanks. .500 career record in the MVC and only made the tourney once before this year I think. Plays extremely slow. Teams seem to be like Archie's in that they're all defense and no offense. I want a coach that has shown they coach both sides and has an exciting brand of basketball. -

If we can’t get one of those top candidates Mark Pope at BYU looks really interesting. Won a title in college and even played for the Pacers in the NBA. Only two years at BYU but he had a top 15 team last year and has another top 30 team this year after losing 6 players from last year’s team. His teams play a really fun style. He’s shown the ability to adapt his team’s play based on what personnel they have. He’s had a lot of success in the transfer market which is appealing. Top 10 kenpom offense last year and he has a top 25 kenpom offense and defense this year. I’ve read that he’s someone Arizona could be looking at if they fire Sean. -

The candidates this year compared to four years ago seem so much worse. Maybe I'm imagining it. Feel like there were a couple of really good candidates when we hired Archie but we just made the wrong choice. I like Drew, Oats, and Musselman this year and think they'd have success here for a long time but they're probably unattainable. Looking at people a step below those three all feel like a huge risk and we end up with people like Fife as the best candidate. -

I'm pretty Mike White was on the hot seat and Florida fans would be ecstatic if we hired him away from them. They really underachieved last year. -

Save us Scott Drew -

He took over after one of the biggest scandals in NCAA history at Baylor so he must be pretty confident in his abilities based off that. -

I get frustrated when people say this. Crean got 9 years. Sampson was fired for cheating and all the other things going on. Davis resigned and has even admitted that he wasn't ready at the time to be a coach at a big school. I'm confused what all these outside observers expected from us and how much more patient we should be. If Archie gets fired it's because he has not been able to win enough. Four years should be enough time for a good coach to show they're on the right trajectory which it doesn't look like is the case right now for Archie. -

https://www.si.com/college/2020/02/28/scott-drew-baylor-basketball Another article from last year about Drew. I think the more I read about him the better fit he seems. Sounds like he’s someone that could handle all of the outside of basketball things the coach at IU needs to deal with that it doesn’t seem like Archie necessarily enjoys. -

I’ve read a couple of articles that Drew rubbed some opposing coaches the wrong way and they thought there’s no way he could bring good recruits to Baylor without being dirty. The NCAA spent a year at Baylor and just found the excessive texts and phone calls which he was punished for. He hasn’t had any rumblings of being dirty since 2012 when he was punished for the calls. -

Unless we’re getting Stevens which I think is unrealistic at this point, I think it’s possible to find flaws in all of the possible candidates. But a new hire is as much about projecting what they’ll be in the future as what they’ve done in the past and everyone has their own opinion on who they think will be the best. In my opinion I think it’s easiest to see how a coach that has had a top 5 team with a team full of 4 star recruits and transfers the last two years would be able to have success here. I just hope the people making the hire finally are able to get one of these right. Since all of these candidates have some flaws it’ll take a little luck which we are definitely due for after 25 years of mediocre basketball. -

I’ve watched a good amount of Baylor the last two years and they’re fun to watch on defense. Always high effort and making the other team uncomfortable with their constant pressure. The defensive efficiency numbers backup that it’s an elite defensive system. -

He’s going to win it this year unless they lose out which is unlikely. I think whether or not you like Drew is based on if you think these last two years are sustainable or not.
