DH in NL in 2022. Is that through the end of this bargaining agreement?

That is fantastic. I have no clue why it took so long.

There are a few of us on here that remember fondly when there was no DH at all in MLB.  <sigh>

Why is that better, though?

I realize that I dont speak for everyone, but the concept of 9 players per team always resonated with me.

A triple is more exciting than a home run.

Grass is better than artificial turf.

Baseball played outside is infinitely better than baseball played inside.  If there was a scale for things that went beyond infinite, this would be on it.

A starting pitcher facing a hitter for the 4th time in a game is more riveting than a game where a hitter faces 3-4 different pitchers.

The stolen base needs to make a comeback, and does the hit 'n' run.

Shouldn't a DH give you more of an ability to steal bases and hit n run? More hitters, more guys with the ability to steal a bag 8 vs. 9. Heck yeah these two things need to come back!

Do you guys only watch NL baseball because the AL has used the DH for years?

I more or less tune the TV out if I see a pitcher batting. If it's 2 outs, I'm already in the restroom/kitchen getting ready for the next half inning.

I'm honestly just trying to understand the other viewpoint.

A DH for me is kind of like a punter in football.  He exists due to the rules of the game, and can impact the game if he does his job well, but contributes in no other way.

Now that I think about it, Brownstown football doesnt apply to the 'DH' concept.  It uses its Quarterback (i.e. pitcher) to punt out of a standard formation 90% of the time, thereby ignoring the potential contribution of a 'specialist'.

Not quite seeing the analogy. Not saying you are wrong. I know Tennesse uses their DH as the leadoff hitter, idk that a leadoff hitter could be considered a specialist?

And back to football... showed up my first practice before my FR year and Coach May said, "oh and btw, our QBs are our punters from here on out, so you need to teach yourself" lol That was 2005. QBs have punted since then.

But see, having your QB punt adds an element of strategy.  Is he running or punting, throwing or pooching, etc.  It gives the defense a lot to think about.  Punting, after all, is not the QBs primary role in the game.

I could argue we are taking strategy out of our game plan this way.... because we don't have to prep an entirely new unit/blocking scheme. We also don't have to worry about teaching our kids how to cover because the ball just rolls until we down it. We just use our "punt team" practice time, as essentially another Team O period.

I get that the DH takes strategy out of the game, at least somewhat. Not arguing that. I see the punter comparison more now, for sure.

Yes, I know that. I said "PH" saying... everything that it entails. I understand there is more to it then just switching out the guy headed to the plate.

I can't type all of the nuances that existed pre-DH.  I liken the DH to the 3-pt. shot.  Both have changed their games immensely.  Some good, some bad.

All I know--

I enjoy watching a game more with a DH then not a DH. I don't have all the background and all of that, so I'm not trying to argue which is better. Just for me... I prefer it. I would also prefer most games end up 12-9 lol

But you also didn't grow up when the game was "pure."  It is what it is.  The DH is here to stay.

I can't have an opinion on something I don't know about. I refuse to do that. I can only comment on games I have watched with and without a DH. All I can go off of.

I never played in a game without a DH. Never coached in one either. I have only watched.

Heck when I was coaching baseball we had an "EH"... extra hitter. So you could add someone to your lineup if you wanted. 10 guys in the order. This was a way that more kids got to play. Solid idea for young kids.

I have come to the conclusion that it is dang hard to explain how things were back in the day to people.  I actually have the same problem with my adult children.  They believe that only having 5 TV stations existed when Noah was building the Ark and that 8 track tapes are a figment of my imagination.  I won't be around when you turn 70 but man I am so curious how you are gonna explain how sports were to your kids/grandkids.  LOL

From my 54 year-old pov, MLB is broke.  The DH, once again my pov, just makes it brokener.  MLB has taken something that worked well and f***ed it all up.

Back in the day there were some pitchers who were pretty good hitters. Also back then small ball was more prevalent than it is today so bunting was a bigger part of the game.

How about actually having more day games in the playoffs and the World Series

When I was young I liked the NL a lot better than the AL.  Back when you only had 4 channels and only got one or two national games a week you didn't see that many teams.  Since I am a Reds fan I tended to watch more National League games since there were no inter league games.
