Never understood the concept of the opener

You'd have had a conniption if you'd have watched the Blue Jays-Yankees game...

4 outfielders and the 3 other guys to the right of 2nd base for Joey Gallo. I can't wait til they end this crap next year...gimmick ball...

Jackie Robinson Day today...wore my 1947 Brooklyn Dodgers hat in honor...

One of the 2 most important players in baseball history (Babe Ruth)...

Baseball relies a lot on its history.  I wonder if 100 years from now will Hackie and Babe still be as revered as they are now.

I wonder as well...

At one time, baseball was America's game...

Here's a good graph showing how football supplanted baseball...

The 1958 NFL Championship game (Colts-Giants OT..."The Greatest Game Ever Played") is given a lot of credit in making football "must see TV." But, I also think the "tinkering" people, especially the metric crowd, who changed baseball's rules and the way it's played, have to shoulder some blame...

If some have their way even more rules to "modernize" the game are on the horizon. I appreciate what Theo Epstein did for the Cubs, but I wonder if the changes he proposed in that article will make a difference...

Crash Davis knew back in 1988 😁

I know we love The Natural, Sandlot, Field of Dreams, etc....but still pound for pound the best baseball movie ever.

My buddy never reached his ultimate so he spent a few years in minor leagues. Has always said it's the best reflection ever. New star, aging vet.....some guys just trying to earn beer $.....classic movie.

Mendoza Line Watch (under .200 batting average)

Once I week, I will monitor the Mendoza Line to see who has earned membership into what is normally an exclusive club.  Members will come and go, and by the end of the year, most aspiring members will be on the outside looking in.

Qualifying batters only can apply.

This week the club is 56 members strong.  Notable members include former MVPs Josh Donaldson, Jose Abreu, Joey Votto, Jose Altuve, and Bryce Harper.

The Chairman of the Board for the club this week is Cleveland Catcher Austin Hedges with a batting average of .000 (0-19).

I feel the rise of the NFL and the fall of MLB coincides with the birth of ESPN.

That's 64%.  Wonder what the other 36% watch?  The question was 'sport' specific, so in theory no one should be answering 'The Nightly News' or 'Porn'

But the graph really doesn't bear that out. 1963 or so was when the lines cross. ESPN didn't start until 1979.

Like I said, "The Greatest Game Ever Played" (1958) kicked it off...middle  of the Packer dynasty? Advent of the pass happy AFL? Super Bowl era, particularly Super Bowl III (which in my mind rivals "The Greatest Game Ever Played" for relevance)?

Coupled with the aforementioned "Year of the Pitcher" and the superstars like Aaron, Mays, Mantle and Clemente reaching the end of their careers maybe?

To me, I take Field of Dreams over any other movie of any topic/genre.  That said, i don't really consider it a 'Baseball' film.  Certainly not in the same sense that we look at The Natural, Bull Durham, Major League, etc.  All those movies had peripheral storylines, but 'winning' ballgames was a focus.  With Field of Dreams, there was no emphasis put on team success or individual performances on the field (save for Archie (Doc) Graham's at bat).  Field of Dreams was about redemption, not baseball.

Field of Dreams and Tombstone are the only two movies that I will stop and watch every single time I come across them in the on-screen guide.  Doesn't matter if they are 10 minutes in or only have 10 minutes left.  I'm watching.

Olympics, track and field, tennis, hockey?

They got to add up to 36%.  I'll take out 'Olympics' and break it down into Swimming, Gymnastics, etc.  But, I'm not sure I can cobble together 10-12 other sports that would add up to 36%.  I mean no one is going to put 'Biathalon' down on a list like this.  Golf, I suppose, is out there.  NASCAR.

Could have included "don't watch sports at all" I suppose...but as you said, golf, auto racing, coupled with horse racing, and others that usually have a higher viewership at certain times certainly count...

Obviously a US poll or soccer would be at the top...
