Don't like the Gray trade, got the Twins top pick from last year. Probably be 4 years before he reached the majors if he does at all.

It's the ultimate statement that they are not going to try to compete the next 2-3 years.

Also been reported that the Reds haven't even contacted Costellanos about resigning him.

No it’s not. The Reds were always going to trade Gray and wanted to open a rotation spot for Greene or Lodolo. They got a prospect that has the potential to be special. Yes, he’s a prospect but it’s what the Reds have to do if the want to be able to compete consistently. It’s the same thing the Rays do year in and year out.

Likely because they know what Boras is asking for and they no they aren’t going to offer that.

The Rays trade starting pitchers a month before the season starts?

It’s only a month before because of the lockout. This would’ve been done in January if not for the lockout. The Rays trade players on expiring contracts for prospects to develop in their farm system. It’s the way they’ve been able to stay relevant and Gray only had this year left on his deal. He also wasn’t nearly as good last year and was inconsistent.

Wil they use the $10M they save to upgrade the rest of the roster?  The answer is NO.  Of course, they already jettisoned Barnhart, Miley, and Castellanos with no return, so the salary saved so far is actually significantly more than that.

They need a right-handed bat.  They have to use some of this money to acquire a bat.  Otherwise, I have visions of Kyle Farmer as our DH when Stephenson is behind the plate.

It’s to early to say any of that. They still have more moves to make.

Who are the 5 you see in the rotation at the start of the year?

Castillo, Mahle, Gutierrez are the 3 I’d say are almost locks. Then Sanmartin, Greene, Lodolo, Ashcraft, O’ Brien, Marinan, and Santillan will compete for the last 2 spots. They could still add a veteran to compete as well. I’d guess they are Greene and Lodolo’s spots to lose.

Braves sign 1B Matt Olson, previously of A's.  Noteworthy because that likely means the end of the Line for Freddie Freeman in Atlanta.

That's a sad day for baseball.  Some guys just should never have to change uniforms.

I get if you want to rebuild but if you are trading all star caliber players you should get more in return.  I am tired of seeing other teams trading really good players for at least top prospects. The Reds got nothing for guys like Cueto and Chapman and it appears with these trades it looks the same.

What is bad if they had the new playoff format lady year the Refs would have made the syoffs.  So what do the Refs do they have traded Winker, Suarez, Gray and Barnhart.  They let go Miley and not making any attempt to resign Castellan's.
