Transfer Portal 2022

Didn't he fail to get this same kid while recruiting at Indiana?

Yes.

It got me to wondering if mid-major coaches will start to recruit more players that they probably don't have a chance at right out of HS just to start building a relationship. Then in the future if the players enter the transfer portal they may have a better chance at that time. Miller was at IU at that time but I would be surprised if his previous relationship didn't help.

When is the deadline to get in and avoid sitting out a year?

May 1st...but I think he's a grad transfer so deadline doesn't matter. Grandison seemed like a good kid. I've heard he's not short on the intelligence game either.

I will say that's a lot of roster turnover going on over there past couple of seasons. Not sure if it's just an odd thing with Covid or a signal of something else. Either way doesn't matter much to us. So glad we've got our core coming back, with a very strong core in recruiting....along with more 2023 help on the way.

I would call that a big loss for Illinois.

I don't know big loss per se...because they've brought in multiple transfers. Just getting a team to gel together is so important and if you have to do that every Nov-Jan....sometimes it presents it's problems in March. As we've seen over there last couple seasons.

Shoot Cal has had the same problem for years and the talent he's getting is far greater. Like I said earlier....glad we have a foundation for next and years ahead. Not having to grasp at straws every April/May,etc...

Illinois wasn't expecting him to return. Would love to have him back but I think that ship has now sailed. Will be interesting to see what he does. If he does return to college he'd need a waiver. Also does he look to drop down a level to have a bigger role? Or find a smaller role at a place like Duke or Kentucky?

I can tell how little it matters to you since you keep posting about it over and over... 🤣

I am still amazed at the annual turnover at Illinois for Underwood. It's like every year they lose so many players and then hail Mary at the end of the season to replace them. This has been the way since he first arrived.

They have to replace 66 ppg (between Cockburn, Plummer, Frazier, Grandison, and Curbelo)  from last year. And unless Coleman Hawkins or RJ Melendez have a Keegan Murray type breakout season, I'm just not seeing it.

Don't sell Goode short.

Shhh....don't tell the natives. 2 tourney wins in 5 years with annual roster turnover that only rivals UK and only 1 2nd rounder in the NBA to show for it. Sounds like solid ground over there.

I don't know... He struck me as one dimensional in the few minutes I saw him play last year... A catch and shoot specialist... A Miller Kopp in training if you will... No real dribble drive and a limited mid-range game. And his defense didn't look to be stellar...

The Melendez kid can be special, I think. Coleman Hawkins is the enigma to me. Size, talent, but he seems to lack confidence.

The Illini don't have Kofi making the lane into a KOA anymore, so their perimeter game can be played honestly. And I don't think that bodes well for Goode...

It's the new normal in college hoops. But there wasn't much turnover last year, brought most everyone back including Frazier, Williams, Kofi, etc. Those "super seniors" leaving now make it seem like more change.

Good thing we added Mayer and Shannon then. Illini will look very different for sure.

Hmm...seems like you got your panties all wadded up when I compared Goode to Kopp a few months back. How things have changed! 😂

So Shannon (career 11 ppg) and Mayer (career 7 ppg) are going to make up those 66 ppg you lost?

Ooookay...is that the math they teach in Champaign?

"Miller Kopp in training" is what I said. He's not there yet... I'd be surprised if Goode ever equals Kopp's sophomore or junior numbers...

They will miss the defense & rebounding more than points

Well, probably more likely than the 2 guys you mentioned. But of course it will be more than 2 or 3 to replace the 5 guys you listed. And you're making math jokes? 🤣

re: Kofi that is for sure. But we'll be playing such a different style that it will be hard to compare the numbers. Probably some rough times early in the season.

Hey, you're the one who touted them as offensive dynamos that were going to bridge the void from 66 ppg to what you have coming back...a whole 16 ppg!

Of course I kinda counted on you to figure that out, but I guess I should stop overestimating your intellect...

Looks like Gonzaga got a big transfer in Malachai Smith, who was born in Evansville, btw.

This is from the article:

Widely viewed as one of the best mid-major players in the country last season, Smith averaged 19.9 points, 6.7 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game while shooting 40.7% from 3-point range, which led to him being named the Southern Conference Player of the Year.

Another year of over hyped Gonzaga basketball followed by losing in the tournament when the lack of competition catches up to them

Give them credit for trying to beef up the non-conference schedule but yeah...that weak conference just kills their preparation.
