Kentucky/Gonzaga home and home WTF

Recommended Posts

I think the truth is that Calipari knows 6,000 fans in the PNW probably won't be as much as a factor as 17,000+ who all hate your school. Assembly rattled Anthony Davis and Terrance Jones and it was visible on their faces. There aren't many places in the SEC he has to deal with anything close to that. He lost that game because he couldn't calm his guys down and couldn't communicate with them due to the noise. All calculations to never bring a group of underclassmen to AH again.

This is a compliment to IU.  If he is fine playing a premier team on the road and being afraid of playing Indiana, that's a feather in IU's cap.  That Wat Shot loss obviously traumatized him.

Having said that, Woody and Cal are friendly.  Woody understands the history and tradition of this series.  To Calipari it seems to be meaningless.  But Woody has the type of personality where we might work something out, even if it requires an Indy/Louisville rotation.  Bob Knight accepted that.  We don't need to be afraid of our own shadow thinking Cal will steal Indiana kids by showcasing the games in Indy.  Knight didn't overthink it.  We played it that way and I predict this comes back now that Fred is gone.  Don't let fear of KY recruiting dictate what you do here.

Speaking only for myself, the series means a lot to me and I want it back.  I think the benefit is worth it for a variety of reasons that we have hashed out over the years.

The minute we start fearing PUKe, is the minute we should just shut the program down.

I truly don't get the reluctance to play a true home and home.

A) You get to bring a quality team into your arena. ---> Great for the fans.

B) You set your team up for the possibility of silencing a rowdy, opposing fanbase --> Great for your team.

If you are truly proclaiming your team to be a Blue Blood, Best of the Best, then put them in the position to prove it. Be a competitor and compete.

2 key reasons. He does not want to give any advantage to the other other team. Recruits can play in larger venues. To lose to Indiana in Indy not nearly as big of a deal. He does not want potential guys from Indiana to see how crazy Assembly Hall is and want them to be a part of it. Much harder to poach our talent. Playing in the big venues drives so much revenue and its a great sales pitch for the used car salesman that CAL is

I can agree with your first point. I'm sure most coaches would rather not give an advantage to another team.

In terms of the venues, bigger doesn't always equate to better. Any Indiana player worth being recruited by either IU or UK will understand how crazy Assembly Hall is regardless if the IU-UK game is played there. I doubt their decision is based on games played on site vs off site.

As for revenue, I can't speak to that, as I don't know what the split/shares are when divided for a neutral site, vs the take when playing at home.

I think its more about exposure with Cal. Cal feels that on a neutral court UK wins 9 or 10 out of 10. Play in Lucas oil beat IU and the top Indy kids might be influenced. Lose in Bloomington and they might be influenced in the wrong way. I think he is just being a coward but everything he does is so calculated to keep getting the 5 star kids

If I'm Gonzaga, I tell them they agreed to this, they need to play the game at Gonzaga. Let Calipari squirm and try to talk his way out of it. It's honestly amazing what this guy gets away with.

I may be wrong with this but I think Gonzaga plays all non conference home games there and only conference games on campus. I might be wrong I thought I heard that on the radio the other day

Sounds like this is more of a ‘home’ and home since I’m sure the other game will be played in Rupp.

There is a word that immediately came to mind that I can't say here.  It refers to a kitty cat.  And I am 100% serious.  It's the perfect characterization and word for it.

You think Bob Knight ever thought that way (refusing to play at an opponent's venue)?

It just blows my mind that coaches are still letting him do this after a whole decade. I know Gonzaga really needs the non-con schedule boost, but seriously.

When Utah did this "home and not your home" shindig with them several years ago, Utah's coach acted like he was completely at Calipari's mercy when it came to deciding where the games would be played. When are coaches finally going to grow a backbone and stop letting him throw his weight around?

Didn't Alford's UCLA Bruins beat UK at Rupp?

John Calipari is the epitome of everything that is wrong with college athletics. He has no concern if his players get an education. He really doesn’t even care about UK. He cares about himself, his image and his wallet.

John Calipari holds too much power in the world of college basketball. When ESPN fawns over him and CBS devotes headlines on him, it’s just disgusting.

I would rather no high level program agree to play against his team. Obviously the conference schedule is what it is. The best way to bring down ol’ Teflon John is to make him a pariah. Don’t cave.

Other, more worthy opponents out there.
