Where Is the Best Pizza in Indiana?

Grew up eating Flamingo Pizza, in the Miller (on the Lake) section of Gary. Traditional thin crust.... cut into squares, without asking to be cut into squares.

Loved the Cafe Pizzeria too.  As a student.... in the late '60's Nick's Old English Hut did not make their own pizza.  When you ordered a pizza at Nick's they had it made at the Cafe Pizzeria, and it was walked down to Nick's.  I think at that time, both places were owned by the same owner.

Anyone who enjoys a good pie should check out Tomato Pie in Paragon.  It’s a small town about 10 min south of Martinsville off of 67.  There’s nothing in the town besides this gem.  One of the best pizza joints I’ve ever been to, and their breadsticks are the best I’ve ever had.

Bringing the Pizza King conversation here where it makes more sense...

I suspected that not all these Pizza Kings you all are talking about are really the same brand and may not be remotely similar.  A quick search on Google turned up the following:

The Muncie area Pizza Kings: http://pizzaking.com/

Warsaw area: http://www.pizza-king.com/

The ORIGINAL Pizza King in Lafayette: https://theoriginalpizzaking.com/

Rockville: http://www.amorepizzaking.com/

Kokomo: http://www.kokomopizzaking.com/

Terre Haute: http://ballyhoopizzakingterrehaute.com/29320

Jeffersonville & New Albany: https://soinpizzaking.com/

Alexandrian & Tipton: http://www.cardinpizzaking.com/

Winimac: http://pizzakingwinamac.com/index2.htm

Rushville: http://pizzakingofrushville.com/

Evansville: http://www.pizzakingevansville.com/

...and there were a bunch more.  It took awhile, but I finally figured out that the site listed as the ORIGINAL Pizza King, really IS the original and lists a whole bunch of Indiana locations: https://theoriginalpizzaking.com/locations .  If your Pizza King is not listed here, it's not a true Pizza King.

...and here is the original story of Pizza King:

Pizza King Inc., originated in 1956 in the heart of Lafayette, Indiana. Owner Wendell Swartz from Lafayette had an idea to open a pizza restaurant. Wendell’s vision and passion for culinary expertise created the perfect ingredients of Pizza King’s “secret recipe.” Come 1966, when Wendell was ready to sell, whom better to buy the business from him, then his trusted employee who managed his books, Don Schutz. 5 stores were now established when Don bought the business, and he knew he could grow it even more, and he did. Providing customers a fun, relaxed, entertaining experience. Pizza King Inc., is now a family treasured business throughout over 70 plus locations in Indiana. Continually bringing you our delicious, customer satisfaction, fresh wholesome ingredients. We pride ourselves on our specially made ingredients just for us! Fresh ground pepperoni, pure pork, specially made sausage, and our special blend cheese. Where ever you travel and see our Pizza King logo, rest assured you will experience that same great “secret recipe” taste and value you have come to trust and love. Thank you for letting us be a part of your family tradition for over 60 plus years. The Proof Is In The Taste, ~ The Schutz Family ~

All these years, you all had no idea you were eating Purdue pizza, did you?

Great read and research.  BTW, ate at a Pizza King in Lafayette.......it sucked!

When I see such a wide divergence of opinion, I have to question the overall management of the franchise.  McDonald's does a great job of maintaining uniformity.  Obviously, that is not the case with Pizza King.  So I did some research.  And found out that there are actually two chains, using the name of Pizza King, in Indiana.

One of my favorite sandwiches in my neck of the woods is called "The Big Sir".

Am I bad person if I say that I am not all that into pizza anymore?  I ate alot of it as a kid and into college.  But, it's kind of boring now.  If I do get it, one of my favorites is adding giardiniera to give it some taste and kick.  If my family, especially kids, didn't like it, I wouldn't get it more than a couple of times per year.

One of my least favorite is deep dish.  Giordano's is so overrated to me.  It's a tourist place but a whoop de doo otherwise, IMO.  Thin crust with some kick and taste is the way to go IMO.

I agree man. I used to eat it five days a week in college but now only when my family wants it.

A good pizza starts with a crispy, thin crust.  I never understood the attraction to a thick, chewy crust.

Referring to thick chewy crust.  In Colorado, we have Beau Jo's which offers up what they call a Mountain Pie.  They serve thin crust too.

The Mountain Pie is nothing like a Chicago Style Deep Dish.  The crust is rolled, and they serve it with honey, to eat as a dessert. BeauJo.jpg

Same franchise as Pizza King in Indiana.  Just named Sir Pizza in Florida

Sir Pizza - Wikipedia

Yup, was informed of that by my NA friend down here in florida. "best pizza ever" in his opinion, but, I prefer a crispy thin crust pizza myself.

Bobe's pizza in Vincennes has my favorite Pizza, Stromboli's and breadsticks hands down. If any of you are in the Vincennes area and have an appetite and some free time, check out Bobe's Pizza on 6th street, you should at least try it once.

Chanello's out east was always one of my favorites.

Oley's is a favorite too.  Admittedly, I never knowingly had Pizza King.

Noble Roman's was decent when it existed on S Anthony in Ft Wayne.  Sadly, I can no longer remember any of the menu items.

Still a Noble Roman's in Columbus. It's very solid.

I'm equally comfotable with thin, pan, or stuffed. Nice to rotate styles!

Me as well.  Guess it just suits my fancy at the time, as to what I order.  Love 'em all.

For years, I stayed away from a Margarita pizza, as it did not have the traditional pizza sauce.  Just Olive Oil, instead. However, once I tried one, I just fell in love.   Lot's of different variations.  Best is with the sliced tomatoes and full leaves of basil on top. Along with Mazzarella cheese on top.

My wife makes a great Margarita pizza.

Keeping on the food theme.  But changing subjects.  If you haven't had a Georgia peach in it's prime, from a roadside stand in Gay, Georgia.... you haven't had the best peach of your life.  But don't go too fast, as there are less than 100 residents in Gay.  But if you do stop... the peach is the size of a small cantaloupe.  It will be washed roadside for you and chilled if you like.  Spend a dollar, and get change back for the best peach you have ever eaten.
