It would be massively, unbelievably stupid for him to knowingly allow his wife to do that — I can’t imagine any professional in his position allowing that. The three accounts that were tweeting were all linked to her cell phone number. I think it makes sense that his wife would be one of the first to know of the initial inquiry into the accounts, and that she immediately shut them down. He’ll go down as a legend and who’s gotten pretty deep into machine learning AFAIK and seems to be enjoying it. But it just makes logical sense that the first thing he would do after hearing about this is ask his wife if she knew what was going on. Then when she admitted it was her, they shut down the accounts. I don’t think it follows at all that he had to have known she was doing this all along.
