ATH DaShaun Brown to IU

This would be a great pick up.  You can't teach athleticism.  He'd be our 3rd highest rated guy on 247 if we can get him.

I also find it interesting that the two people who show up on his 247 profile as recruiting him are Teegardin (safeties coach), and Heard (wide receivers coach).  Might be a good enough athlete to have the option of playing on either side of the ball, kind of like Taylor coming into this year.

Just some recruiting numbers I threw together quick to see where we stand.  Hopefully we can add a few more and keep most of them committed.  Could be one of our best classes ever.  2013 was obviously good, but the depth of that year is nowhere near as good as the depth we're getting now.  Comparing two similar rated guys from each year, in 2013 we had a commitment from Anthony Young (170th best WR).  We had 8 position guys ranked lower than him.  Some panned out, but quite a few didn't.  This year we have a commitment from Jordan Jakes (130th best WR), and we only have 2 position players rated lower than him.  All of our guys this year would rated quite a bit higher than Young from 2013.  We really are building some darn good depth.

Current ranks

Current 247 B1G rank = 10

Average player rank = 11th place at an 85.75 average (counting Illinois' 7 commit class)

National rank = 41

If we sign Brown

247 B1G rank = 10

Average player rank = 10th place at an 85.88 average

National rank = 39 (with at least 5 less commits than 6 of the 8 teams in the 31-38 range)

If we sign Brown and don't count our long snapper commit

I love that we signed a long snapper, but a specialist like that definitely drags down our average player ranking

247 B1G rank = 10

Average player rank = 9th place at an 86.4 average (less than .3 behind Illinois and Iowa)

National rank = 39

How many more scholarships/spots do you have for the class?

Somebody smarter than me could probably give a better answer, but I'm guessing we'll be around 21.  The roster shows only 18 in the senior class, so I'd guess there will be a few more than that.  I'm too lazy to look to see if all 18 are scholarship players, but I don't think it will be a real big class for us.

  • KDB changed the title to ATH DaShaun Brown to IU

I’ve seen this kid play, he has so much athleticism it’s insane. At 6’1 it’s not too crazy to think he might be a QB or HB. His hands need work if they’re expecting him to play WR. I see him personally as a HB because of his speed and ability to make people miss. QB would be second best option, has an accurate arm and can throw the ball pretty well.

Thanks for the first hand info!  You can never have too many play making athletes.

Just based on our team's needs, I could see him being somewhat like Reese Taylor.  One of my complaints with our offense was that I think we held Taylor back because we didn't want him to get hurt.  If we had somebody else like him, we would have a comparable backup if one gets hurt.  Play both of them as much as we want because there wouldn't be a huge drop off from one to the other.

The only negative thing I have to say about this kid is that he has to work on his Awareness if he’s going to be a QB. He wouldn’t be a bad Safety in all respects either. I could see him taking Kick Returns as a Freshman next fall. Good kid. I’ve known this kid since he was in 2nd grade(I helped coach his youth teams for a few years.) There’s another Racine kid that Indiana might want to have a look at in Tyler Tenner of Racine Lutheran. I won’t talk too much about Tenner as this thread is about Brown. Let me know if you guys want to hear me talk about some under the radar kids from the SE part of Wisconsin.

He would have decent size (height) to play safety.  I love kids who played QB growing up.  They usually have a better awareness of the other positions on the field and can adapt to other positions.

I really hope he can return kicks.  Our kickoff returns were a joke.  I think our returners had to have rotator cuff surgery in the offseason due to waiving their arms above their head so much.

I'd love to hear about some of the other guys in your area and what you know about them.  Might be a good idea for a new thread if you're interested.

That would be a thread to work on as I have a list of at least 10-15 guys I could name. For Brown’s HS he played QB/SS and did KR/PR so he did a lot for a team that just won a state championship. It makes me wonder if the coaching staff actually looks at these posts. They could find some guys that not many know about. I’ll get working on that thread about some kids in my area.

I've heard people talk on message boards about sending info about recruits to the athletic department.  @milehiiu is a pretty smart guy, he would probably know if people care about that kind of thing our not.

I don't like that DeBord is "#LEO"ing these commitments on twitter. He obviously thinks he's sticking around.

Curious, we haven't heard anything re: CTA evaluation of his staff.  If CTA keeps himself chained to DeBord for the upcoming year, I think they both go down with the ship next year!

I would guess a lot of coordinator changes around the country won't happen until after the early signing period.
