5'11 - 6'0 NY point guard who can shoot, recruiting history is mixed, showing in the 3- to 4- star range, but some interesting articles reflecting he has gotten some big school and mid-tier attention, based on his play in tourneys etc. --

So offers I can find from Pitt, MD, Illinois, Cinci, St. Johns,  UMass, and a few others, so far. Rated 20th at his position and 5th in state by espn recruiters.

Wouldn't just look at the stars the recruiting services have given him on scouting so far, take a look at Zagoria's comment:

2020 ⁦@ariidavis_⁩ had 30 on 12 shots for ⁦@NYRhoops⁩. Kid is one of the top available PGs in 2020. Plays for ⁦@step_basketball

Posted this back on April 30, re-posting it just for Zagoria's comments then, which seem to have borne out well.

For those who don't know him, Zagoria is an East Coast / NY recruiting writer / author who has ZagsBlog for years (https://www.zagsblog.com/). When he compliments a player like this, it's worth noting. He's a bball insider on SNY and espn radio, along with covering hoops as a contributor for NBA.com, etc. He knows his territory.

You forgot doesn't think highly of IU and often leaves IU out of his articles when writing about a recruit IU is in on with other schools.

Nice article on how RJ Davis is playing on the EYBL circuit.  From Inside the Hall.

https://www.insidethehall.com/2019/05/15/an-in-depth-look-at-how-iu-targets-are-performing-on-the-eybl-circuit/

RJ Davis – New York Renaissance

It’s not hyperbole to suggest that Davis has been one of the best players on the EYBL circuit this spring. The numbers back it up.

Over eight games on the circuit, he’s averaging 21.2 points, 4.1, assists, 3.4 rebounds and 2.5 steals.

But the advanced statistics are even more impressive. According to Open Look Analytics, Davis has an offensive rating of 134.5 and an effective field goal percentage of 60.9. His free throw rate (FTA/FGA) of 57.4 is very good and he’s knocking down 81 percent of his attempts at the line.

Davis is shooting 53.8 percent on 3s in EYBL play and 48.4 percent on 2s.

By comparison, his teammate Ethan Morton, a former IU target who recently committed to Purdue, is shooting just 40 percent on 2s and 13.3 percent on 3s.

Found the link thanks to our good HSN poster @The Daily Hoosier

Wow!! That is some really good shooting! Not many players period shooting better than that...much less point guards.

Honestly he is probably 5-11 too, so he is making those shots over guys much bigger than him.

Yeah that’s my biggest concern is his size...he and Pack are on the smaller side...I honestly prefer 6’1 at minimum but well there are room for exceptions.

Like Yogi.

I said there are exceptions. Lol I just stated my preferences...but I really like the Davis kid. I prefer bigger pgs in having size to get to the rim and helping with defending. That said special kids are special lol. Also Yogi was pretty well put together too. Not exactly a “little”. He was strong enough to take the contact. Good point about Yogi though!

He just got a Crystal Ball pick to Marquette from Dain Ervin, although it's only 1 pick.  I imagine that recruiting pitch of be like Markus Howard and shoot whenever and wherever you want will work for some kids.

I don't put much into that one.  He's on an OV at Georgetown right now, who some are saying is the team to beat including one of the national guys at Rivals.

Georgetown and Marquette, two Jesuit schools as competition. He currently attends a Catholic HS, so that could be a big hurdle.

Archie and assistants to watch this kid again this weekend. Kid is definitely a player. Another 2020 recruit. Can't imagine Archie going in person unless the interest is very real. What's that say to the other 2020 recruits?

I would guess he will be watching multiple guys this weekend so not much.

Video of Davis from Peach Jam here.  What makes him elite?  IMO, it is ability to create space, and then know precisely when to get up a shot once that space is created.  No small thing for someone that is probably not really even 6-foot.  He averaged 8 FTA per game in AAU because of that ability to get a step on people.

The question is do we actually have a chance with this guy?
