I mentioned this in the happy birthday coach thread but thinks it needs to be said here because it's directly related. The culture that was allowed to fester around Devonte green and Justin Smith cost this recruit. This kid is Indiana basketball through and through. Listen to what he said about the way Purdue plays offense and defense. Their mantra is play hard. IU basketball is trending in the right direction but allowing those two and those attitudes to stay on the team probably set the program back a year or two.

Thankfully I think there's enough key and core pieces on this team to start revealing the culture that Archie Miller wants to display here as Indiana basketball.  Smart,tough-minded, team first players.  I think this team is going to surprise.

Are THD and Lander etc not Indiana Basketball?
This is one kid. And yes the team is very much trending in the right direction. We just finished as a top 25 D. Is that playing hard?

i think his decision fit your narrative. I don’t say that to be rude, but it just ignores all the hard playing kids picking iu right now. Every one of the incoming commits is a hard playing kid. They’re all good. Not getting one kid is not some testament to IU not playing hard.. btw, his questions to the team and the discussions with the coaches has a lot to do with how he would be featured. Maybe his stated reasons are not everything? Then there’s the simple fact that we just haven’t been very good for a while and yes that has a lot to do with Crean’s last recruits, but don’t buy everything a HS kid says when picking a team.

Has known PU for 2 weeks

Yeah and he strung it out for 2 weeks so he could put on this silly show.  2 weeks of time wasted by the Indiana staff so he could have his big announcement.  Listen, everyone here, the Indiana kids are great when we get them, but some of them really use the Indiana fanbase to salt their ego.  Again, no one on the national stage is acting like OMG Purdue got a big 4* recruit.  We need to stop acting this way for the in state kids.  We will cheer you along through your career and all of that, but these silly, over the top announcements suck in general, and they really suck if they are for a kid that could not just walk into the NBA if it were not for rules.  They are vanity projects for teenagers and we seem to be one of the few big programs that I am aware of where this kind of stupidity happens.

I am going to drop some heresy here, but the Indiana kids have been a giant mixed bag for us.  We need to stop demanding that the coaching staff put them on a higher pedestal than anyone else.  Poo or get off the pot...we're done with this primadonna show.

Just want to add, I don't mean to dog Indiana state players too bad, they are still going to be our life blood, but for me, I am not going to pay a kid that would not be in my rooting interest any attention until they are an IU Hoosier going forward.

Plenty of truth in here and probably something myself or most haven't paid enough attention on. Maybe TJD, Lander, and others chose to overlook but when a kid first starts visiting (2 years ago) that initial impression lasts.

The shot was taken at the 2 guys that I think hurt the culture.  To quote myself.  "Thankfully I think there's enough key and core pieces on this team to start revealing the culture that Archie Miller wants to display here as Indiana basketball.  Smart,tough-minded, team first players.  I think this team is going to surprise"

Agreed. And recruits watch tv just like us. If it is evident to us that there are selfish and problem kids in the program to us...you KNOW recruits can see that too. I gave Smith the benefit of the doubt because he took so much criticism and yet he played hard and was a big difference in our success when he played well. Devonte I’ve wanted gone from the beginning. Crean recruit through and through. No doubt kids watch closely and see this. No doubt Trey watched us play a combo 3/4 Justin Smith and saw he didn’t get better, he couldn’t hit shots, couldn’t handle the Ball, and thus our offense bogged down when he got the Ball. Thus we hid him. Hard to sell a kid on filling a position we just spent two years trying to hide the current kids weaknesses not showing how the recruits could excel in the system.

Complete scams just like the insiders here that thought it was IU up until the last day right?

I get it. Everyone was wrong. But to defend our insiders they give the info freely and are very clear that they are just passing along the general feeling of the staff. They don’t try to pretend to have an inside track to the recruit.

And the 247 guys are clear that they were providing their feelings/best guesses too. Nobody claimed to know for sure. Everyone happened to be guessing wrong across the IU media landscape. it happens in recruiting.

Yep this recruitment was pretty unique. Trey did hold it much closer to his vest then most. Clearly he feared reprocussions of not choosing the hometown team. Most of the time these recruiting specialist though ask for money and then give you little to no actual intel.

The money is for in-depth coverage, not access to Ms. Cleo. People have paid for media since the dawn of the industry. Just don't understand the constant bashing that occurs on here.

I know everyone says Trey is a good kid and all, and my heart says I should believe 5fouls due to his proximity to the situation, but my head looks at the evidence, and there are a lot of bad optics here.

  • Trey won't play with Furst
  • Trey won't play with Lander (Maybe that was true)
  • All of our insiders feeling strong.  Assuming the staff feels strong.  Where were those feelings coming from?  Who led them in that direction?
  • Saying that you've been committed for two weeks and still having other schools use time and resources to recruit you?
  • Leaking the info early then trying to deny it's accuracy, and shaming others in the process?
  • Committing to Archie's biggest rival on his birthday?  That just smacks of mean spiritedness.

Maybe he's a good kid, but the optics just don't look good.  People said he played this close to the vest ala Cody Zeller, but this seems to me to be 180 degrees out from how the Zellers handled it, at least at the end.

I don’t understand a lot of things...but usually there is a reason. I can only go by my feelings. Their info is generic, non-informative, and many times purposefully misleading. Their monetary model is outdated...they could stand to change things up. I get as good if not better info from other sources. I don’t hate them....just have no use for them.

Make sure you let everyone know as often as possible chief.

A lot of truth in that. In retrospect, telling a few players Tom Cream recruited to look elsewhere might have helped our overall progression.

Wonder what CAM would say if asked directly?

Welp, water under the bridge I guess.

He couldn't let anyone go at the time due to the APR or whatever the grade thing is called. Crean had so much turnover, not only did he leave the talent bare, Crean also left the next coach with little to no room to make changes. Then you have IU's transfer rules that are like no other, its hard for a coach to bring in players. With the new NCAA transfer rule starting, i hope IU changes their rules or we are screwed there to.

To play devils advocate...his mom came out and denied the radio announcement...likely because she knew and everyone else he was doing a recorded interview. But she probably thought it was a rumor just like us that it actually played out on the internet. She was probably just as confused as anyone. She also said tune in for the whole story...meaning not just the little snippet that leaked. I have no problem trying to do damage control of a situation that caught everyone by surprise and trying to protect her son and his happiness. The Trey won’t play with others is just BS to me...on all accounts. People trying to justify why he didn’t play AAU ball with them and extrapolate that to college ball. I’m sure he likely did feel strongly about IU. Purdue was recruiting a 5* kid at his position in Ingram. When that situation played itself out his path to minutes and position on the team became clear. That was a month ago. Two weeks later he made his decision. I think letting coaches make their last pitch was normal and I’d be shocked if he didn’t let Archie know personally the other day he was going to Purdue. Archie isn’t going to leak that. His birthday fell on a Friday. I don’t think that was considered one way or the other. That’s when it fit Treys schedule.

Sure...and you let us know your opinion. It is a message board encouraging us to express our opinion. I don’t think anyone is upset you get value from them..why you upset many don’t care for them?

One of the more strange endings to a recruitment I can remember for sure. Lying to the media and still talking to IU up until the day before just so you can post a video on the date you wanted, not a good look for sure. I guess thats the day we live in now. I almost miss the days of picking up a news paper and seeing so in so committed to wherever, knowing nothing leading up to that.

Boiler's been on our site forever. He's a good guy, even if his school of choice is that awful place (lol). He didn't post last night in this thread, isn't that kind of guy.

Also, if he is lurking and not commenting, that is kind of what you want out of a "guest" of the forum.  He takes a bunch of crap for being a PU fan, if ever he had a chance to puff his chest out, now is it.  And he isn't, so that says something.

Seems like an ok guy, he just was dropped on his head as a child...only explanation for the Purdue fan stance. ;)

I understand wishing to miss out on the drama...I’d love kids to be less theatrical but it isn’t like you HAVE to follow these recruitments so closely. You could avoid all the sites and this side of the forum. We come here because we care so much lol. It’s like crack to an addict lol. My brother loves IU basketball too but he has never got  on the internet once to find out what is going on. He says I’ll know who we get when you tell me lol. So I kinda mean you can live without knowing until you pick up the media guide still if you really want to....but I know you are just like me...you don’t REALLY want to. We just want decisions mad me the way we want for the team we want. I admit it! Won’t happen that way but sure that’s what I want to hear. I loved the Geronimo recruitment...but that’s the exception not the rule lol.
