#11 INDIANA vs #8 MARYLAND

Currently on ESPN classic. Part of the ACC/BIG challenge in 2002. This was the rematch of the title game. Great game. We won it OT. It’s airing from 3pm -5pm. Hearing the names of Newton, Coverdale, Leach, Wright, Hornsby, Moye etc...bring back some memories

It was a fantastic game. Forgot that Steve Blake hit a half court shot that did not count at the end of regulation. Coverdale looked like an All American - dropped 30 points. Unfortunately - like we’ve seen with so many teams the past 18 or so years - that season started off with such promise (final four aspirations) but ended in disappointment with a blow out loss to Pitt in the Rd of 32 of the tournament

fun fact - this was the year after we switched our colors from red to crimson...as a result, 1/2 the arena was wearing red and the other crimson.

Yeah just got done watching two IU games on YouTube with the 92 IU against FSU in the sweet 16 and the 87 final four game against UNLV.

Two great games. Personally loved the UNLV game.  Everyone said IU could not run with the Rebels.  And Knight would be crazy if he chose to do so.  So what did Knight do.  He ran the Rebels into the ground.  That was the genius of Knight in his prime.

The 1987 IU - UNLV game:

Knight later said he game planned for Indiana to shoot early and often.  He didn't feel IU could win with defense.  UNLV was a 37-1 monster ranked #1 in the country, losing their one game by one point.

UNLV averaged 92.6 points per game that season.  Knight wanted to hold them to that, but score a few more.

IU won 97 - 93.

Now that is a master strategist.

Fun fact:  Steve Eyl and Joe Hillman shot a combined 6 for 7 off the bench.

Yep.  The Hurryin Hoosiers ran circles around the Runnin Rebels.
