It was the toughest loss I’ve had in a pretty long life with plenty of bumps and hardships. My wife and I were both just devastated as she’s been our baby for 14 years - got her when she was 8 weeks old. We waited a month to start looking for another dog and we finally found another long-haired dachshund from a rescue organization in Brewster, NY. She was a breeder surrender from Texas, who wasn’t producing enough puppies. She’s five years old and just a sweetheart. Super cuddly and loving and really eager to please. She seems to be great with other dogs and kids, and that’s a plus as our building has plenty of both. One of the best dogs we ever had was a female boxer that was a former show dog. Might have only been 20 lbs or so, but didn't have "little dog syndrome". She knew how big she was, but didn't care. She was in charge. Fortunately, she never had to put it to use, but I have zero doubts that if someone ever broke in, they'd wind up with more than one chunk of flesh missing. The boxer we had, Bre' would strike the "show pose" once in a while, I guess out of habit...she was a striking brindle... She had 3 levels for human/other animals...love (she absolutely loved our family...my youngest was a baby, and she lorded over her like it was her pup), toleration, or intense hatred (which unfortunately included all cats)... Wouldn’t be asleep, but sitting in what we called her “Sphinx” pose: belly on the floor, paws flat, head straight up. Steubenhoosier Posted August 12, 2021 Author Report Share Posted August 12, 2021 Two years ago, I started this thread with a picture of our beloved golden retriever, Dexter. This morning, he took his final breath and we had to say good-bye. We couldn't have asked for a more loving, fun, loyal or protective dog in the nearly 12 years we were blessed to call him ours. We are empty nesters, and Dexter was our boy. We are heartbroken as although the condition that caused his passing had to have been developing over time, it only showed itself yesterday morning. My wife and I feel like we been hit by a mack truck. We are thankful that he went quickly and his suffering was minimal. We are thankful that we were able to be there when he passed. We are extremely grateful for the compassion and care provided by our veterinarian, his wife and his staff. What I have learned throughout this thread is that there are some wonderful pet and animal lovers here at HSN.
