They have no idea what the coach has asked them to do on any particular play. You'd need the coach's own evaluation based on what he called. I am sure they are susceptible to tons of confirmation bias. Having said that, it's fine to look at their assessments. It's a data point. That's all. I just don't view them as determinative by any stretch. PS I have heard this view attributed to NFL coaches too so I am hardly alone on this.
