Troy Game Thread

Didn't get to watch the game live, but watched the recording this morning.

Our defense, while better, isn't quite where I'd like to see it. We had a solid defensive effort for about the first 12 minutes of the 1st half, but let down a bit before halftime. Same thing in the 2nd, but the good effort was only for about 10 minutes. We got hung up on a lot of screens, particularly Armaan (not rare for a freshman). Troy was well coached and their player and ball movement were excellent, they were just physically overmatched.

Loved seeing Damezi employ his mid-range game and he was effective at it too. I think he's going to contribute more than we expected.

I thought Brunk played a solid floor game.  Someone said over in the "Depth" thread how our inside depth with a lot of guys who can get physical will help in B10 play, and I think Joey will be a big part of that.

Lastly, I love Al, and I know he's improved his outside shot, and I know he's a leader, but to me he's still the third best guard on this team behind Rob and Devonte, and he still has some flaws in his game...dribbles into traffic...headlong drives to the basket, and a slightly above average on the ball defender. Not picking on the guy...like I said, love him and his attitude, just an observation.

I'm really anxious to see what this team will do against better competition.

So far......I think so.  That is what I was alluding to.  No slight on Langford, he was injured.  However, I think TJD's skill set will be more "impactful" at this level.

Not to slight Langford.  It just seems to me that TJD has a unique ability to get all of his teammates involved, when he is on the court. With Romeo, I think his teammates held back for Romeo to do his thing.

One more thing. And this included not only TJD, but others.  I was totally impressed with our ability to pass out of the post to the open man.

I agree. Add to this the fact that TJD has much more size and doesn't have to be a play-maker or create his own offense.  I don't know what makes a player a OAD, but TJD is clearly a player that won't come close to using up all of his eligibility. Selfishly, I hope we get two years with him.

Watching the replay and holy %^#$!$%!...saw the ghost of Bobby Knight at 12:42 in the first half...man, was Archie pissed!  Love his (controlled) intensity.

Archie is a defensive minded coach. Much in the likes of Coach Knight.  Albeit different approaches.  However D comes first.  Just as it did with the General.

I think the expectations for Romeo were unreasonable from the start. TJD has some pretty lofty expectations too, but nothing like Langford had.

And I think Romeo's year at IU was exciting. Didn't exactly pan out like I wanted it to (I'm with BGleas...injuries killed us last year), but he was everything I'd hoped for.

It wouldn't be the first time that NBA GM's have disagreed with me in their draft picks, but I don't see TJD as being on the fast track to the NBA. He doesn't have elite size and he can't jump through the roof. Guys like Oladipo and OG are better NBA players than they were college players, and predictably so - I think the opposite will be true for TJD. That's not to say he won't make it in the league, but he doesn't have that upside that makes NBA teams draft guys early.

The thing I probably will remember most about Romeo. Is that even though he finished out the year injured.  He never complained about it. Never used it as an excuse. And never shut himself down because of the injury.... knowing his next stop was going to be on the next level.

Yes, I think this is right. I thought he was going to be a once in a generation player.....this was unfair on my part.

Two years is reasonable. 3 and he'd be an absolute beast.

Some of you may have caught it, but #1for Troy got into foul trouble in the first minute of the game. He was one of their bigs. 2 fouls in less than minute.

Sat down for most of the 1st half, but came back in near the end of the first half, and picked up #3 in 30 seconds.,

Start of the second half...picks up number 4 on the FIRST play of the second have. Sits again.

Exactly 9:00 mark, he comes back in, and picks up #5 in 19 seconds.

He played 2:42 seconds and fouled out. We laughed for 10 minutes. And then the student section did their verbal escort off the floor with "Left, right, left". The guy had never heard it before. You should have seen the look on his face when he finally sat....priceless!

That's great stuff...I'm laughing as I read it and wondering how often he'll hear "left, right, left, right..." this year.😂
