You might not love this as much.  After today's loss PU is #17 in Kenpom rankings with a 10-8 record.  OSU is #13 after today's loss with a 12-6 record. As of 6pm today.

We’re honestly like the Illini fans at this point if our joy comes from seeing others programs lose.  Sad.  Go over to Rupp Rafters sometimes. As crazy as they are their happiness doesn’t depend on someone else’s misery.  We really need to start winning big.

Rupp Rafters literally has 2 threads about the Duke loss on the 1st page

I get what your saying but actually Rupp Rafters has a crazy eleventytwo page thread about the relevancy of IUBB. They whine about Duke, UNC, Louisville, who got who’s cousin pregnant etc. Its like Springer blog over there.

IU win = ice cream sundae

PU loss = cherry on top

Some of you people find something to bitch about no matter what

Hey, why not let people enjoy what they enjoy and lighten up on the judgment.

Hoosiers went from 41 to 40 in kenpom ratings after tonight's game.  We now stand 12 in the B1G ahead of Neb and NW!  Movin on down as Illinois jumped ahead of us.  Say it ain't so!

If only KenPom meant anything to the NCAA selection committee....

Purdue needs 9 wins in their next 13 to get on the bubble. That’s not going to be easy.

Texas was 25th in KenPom last year and ended up a 2 seed.....in the NIT

Seton Hall was 60th in KenPom last year....was a 10 seed in the NCAA

Yep. I've never seen an actual analysis of it, but I seem to remember tourney seeds deviating from KenPom by a LOT.

I think you're 9 of 13 is a little unfair to them. ESPN has them getting one of the last 4 byes - that seems roughly right.

Probably right being too tough with 9-4 to get on bubble.

8-5 would put them 18-13 (11-9)....that would be bubble.

7-6 would put them 17-14 (10-10)....I just don’t think that’s gonna cut it.

People forget that wins/losses are not used by KenPom. Purdue killed MSU and Virgina which really skews their KenPom rating.

I suppose that's because we played cupcakes like Louisiana Tech in the non-conference season.  :coffee:

And, for those too lazy to think through what I just said, Louisiana Tech is #64 in the KenPom.

Can somebody explain what goes into the kenpom rankings? Is it just strength of schedule with wins and losses?

The basic goal of KenPom is to measure efficiency. It does this through a massive formula that takes how a team played vs other teams and where. Wins and Losses are not used in anyway.

So, a team could have a really bad record but was extremely efficient against a couple high level teams and be ranked fairly high. For example, Purdue has 8 losses but completely destroyed MSU and Virgina. The 8 losses doesn’t hurt them and because of how badly they beat MSU and Virgina, they get a high KenPom rating. Purdue also hung in there @Michigan and @Maryland. They lost but played well. The loss means nothing.

IU beat Nebraska and Northwestern at home....but barely. That’s when a team wins but drops in KenPom. The wins means nothing. IU also beat OSU and FSU but again, the margin wasn’t that big. IU also got smoked by Wisconsin and Maryland...those games killed their KenPom rating.

Thats why IU is 40 and Purdue is way higher. IU can beat MSU next week by 1 point in a 41-40 game and could drop in KenPom.

Excellent!  How does NET ranking work.  We barely held top 50.

NET has some KenPom parts to it but it relies on the “quadrant” system. And that takes into account who you play.....but more importantly....where. Wins and losses are weighed heavily.

IU has one “road” win that isn’t even considered a quad 2 win. Because of that, and really having one quad one win (FSU), IU is fighting to get into the top 50.

The difference between NET and KenPom is that NET can change drastically from one game to another. Illinois was struggling to get top 50 and pulled off a win at Wisconsin and home Michigan and jumped them 20 spots. IU could be low 30s or even high 20s with wins vs MSU and Maryland. Why? They are both quad one.

Because of IU’s tough schedule ahead, they get to 20 wins, they are locks. All of the games coming up are quad 1 or 2.

The thing that separates Purdue and IU is that Purdue has some bad losses. IU has none. Purdue has more quad 1 wins right now, but if IU gets a couple of their own, they will pass Purdue in NET ratings.

Now I understand why Duke only went to #2 in Kenpom with 2 loses.  Overall a pretty good rating system but in some cases far from perfect.   Thx.

Teams like Wisconsin totally distort KenPom.

Wisconsin is extremely efficient on both ends of the floor but that doesn’t necessarily translate to wins. They just got smoked last game and is currently 23rd in KenPom with 7 losses.

Its a nice tool to have for fans and has its merit, but can’t rely solely on it.
