So an update on my BIL. He was able to eat breakfast on his own today and kept his oxygen up while doing PT.

For context they are about 30 yrs old.

My sister and BIL live in Salt Lake City. So really far from family.  I was worried about my sister dealing with this alone, but as of now things are looking positive.

Appreciate the prayers and support.  Prognosis right now is looking good but probably going to be a long recovery.

China just won the first battle of Biological warfare. If anyone trusts our government or any communist crapholes they need a mental evaluation.

Why the hell are we turning away Cubans but bussing covid infected Hispanics all over the US?

Cuban food is way way better than Mexican food. Getting a phenomenal Cubano sandwich for lunch tomorrow.

That's a great question.  If anyone is eligible for asylum, the Cubans surely are.

...and it's amazing it took this long for the lab leak theory to gain traction.  As a citizen with no inside information, I was confident it leaked from the Wuhan virology lab within a few weeks of the news initially getting out.

Guys,

Be careful. We (mods) are being flexible as possible in this thread.

There is no clear answer on what is political, and what isn't here.

But it is kinda like porn. You know it when you see it. And a few times we are going beyond SI swimsuit issue to front cover of a Larry Flint publication.

OK. Dropping out. Sorry. I guess what I consider current events insults others sensibilities.

Nobody is having their sensibilities insulted.

Thus is an Indiana Hoosiers/University fan message board.

I am trying to keep that clear, with as much wiggle room as I can have in this topic.

We are HSN first and foremost. I do not want views outside of Iu/sports to impact our family dynamics as IU fans.

This has been discussed before but now seems to be resurfacing with new mask mandates.

We just saw the mayor of Chicago out with 400,000 people at LaLaPalooza without a mask- the day before she imposed new mask rules. Common sense says she would be wearing one if they worked.

Only a N95 mask or greater can stop virus particles- and that is when worn correctly. In general, masks are unsanitary and do little to stop COVID. Fauci has said masks are ineffective. Now come this-

"A top COVID adviser for Joe Biden has admitted face masks were not very effective against COVID-19 and said they only served a political purpose. In an interview on Monday, Michael Osterholm said if particles of smoke could get through a mask, so could the virus.

“Many of the face cloth coverings that people wear are not very effective in reducing any of the virus movement in or out,” he explained. “Either you’re breathing out or you’re breathing in.”"

Is there any scientifically proven reason for keeping up the mask charade?

Don't know about COVID, but it definitely worked against the flu:

“There’s just no flu circulating,” says Greg Poland, who has studied the disease at the Mayo Clinic for decades. The U.S. saw about 700 deaths from influenza during the 2020–2021 season. In comparison, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates there were approximately 22,000 U.S. deaths in the prior season and 34,000 deaths two seasons ago.

I disagree with the premise that masks do not work.  Are they 100% effective?  No, of course not.  But, if you put an unmasked infected person on an elevator with ten unmasked people for 2 minutes, and then put that same infected person, but now masked, on a different elevator with 10 masked people for 2 minutes, do you truly believe the INITIAL spread will be the same.

Here is how masks can get a bad rap.  A family if 5 wears masks everywhere they go, but one of those is a 5 year old who is constantly tinkering with his mask.

The 5 year old is exposed, catches Covid, but because of his age, shows little in the way of symptoms.  Meanwhile, at home, the family does not wear their masks, and the asymptomatic 5 year old spreads it to the rest of the family, even though they were diligent about wearing their mask in public.

This type of scenario gives the false impression that masking does not work.  When, in reality, it's the complete opposite.

The question still remains, where is the actual data? Not anecdotal "well it only makes sense" data. Now if what I am about to say is out there, I have missed it for what, 1 1/2 years? It seems simple to me, take an infected person, in different stages of infection, measure particulate viral load coming out of their mouth while breathing. Then follow that with the same person, same conditions with a mask and measure the viral load.

This seems a very easy test procedure to me. I want to see 1) the data 2) a reason why this isn't as simple as I make it sound 3) if it's already been published, where? This would seem a good way to spread TRUTH, but I'll be darned I've never heard anyone pump it.

The challenge with validating that 'Subject X' spread it to 'Subject 'Y' is that a week from now, when Subject Y tests positive, there is no way to validate with 100% certainty that Subject X caused Subject Y's infection.  Subject Y could have been exposed by someone totally different after, or even before, their encounter with Subject X

I always thought that 'tracing it back' to a specific event, like a wedding or the Sturgis biker rally was a fool's exercise.

I think you are trying to answer a question I didn't ask for. Does "the" mask, or different masks... Slow down the viral load dispersement through the mask material, and to what level. actuall measured values. If I was wanting the world to wear a mask, I would show them this data and dang quickly......... UNLESS of course the data doesn't show what I wanted it to.... Then I would just say, awe shucks, it only makes sense just put it on.

This for sure. Are they foolproof? Nope. Do they help? Absolutely.

Thankfully, NYC has finally decided that vaccination is the way out of this and had now required proven vaccination for indoor dining and events.

You want to take advantage of everything NYC has to offer? Fine, then prove you are vaccinated. No more honor code bullshit.

So far, the people crying on Twitter about it are people that don’t actually live here and didn’t go through what we did in the early days. Don’t care what those people think and don’t need them in my city.

It may be different in less populated areas where such a policy is not needed, but there are too many tourists and people coming here that don’t care about anyone but themselves.

Tough one for sure. In a city where 70M visitors per year generate almost $50B a year in much needed revenue after so many businesses have gone under and many have left....it's tough to make that call. Wish you guys well there.

Yeah, I guess we don’t tend to care about the tourist dollars in Brooklyn as much as Manhattan. They need it much more than we do. Neighborhoods are bouncing back here locally quite well. Even the rents are creeping back up as more people return to the city.

Lost an unvaccinated former coworker today. He went from sick and posting about it on Facebook last Thursday to testing positive in the hospital Saturday and pronounced dead this morning. Wife and 3 kids. 34 years old. Wife briefly hospitalized but apparently doing a bit better now. She is 29 almost 30. Be smart everyone.
