FiveThirtyEight NCAA Basketball Tournament Simulation

Recommended Posts

I know how much everyone is disappointed that the NCAA Basketball Tournament wasn't played this year.  I came across a simulation that was done by the website FiveThirtyEight for both the men's and women's tournaments.  It isn't quite as good as the real thing, but in the men's tournament they simulated Indiana as an 11 seed beating BYU as a 6 seed in the first round.  You can check out the first round here https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/what-might-have-happened-in-the-first-round-of-the-ncaa-tournament/

They have only simulated the first two rounds but in the second round Indiana scores another upset against Seton Hall as the 3 seed.  You can check out the second round here https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/what-might-have-happened-in-the-second-round-of-the-ncaa-tournament/

Again, not as fun as the real tournament but kinda cool to see what could have been.  What are your thoughts on this simulation?  What are the biggest surprises?

I was really surprised that three 11 seeds made it through to the Sweet 16.  I know there were three sub-10 seeds that made it to the Sweet 16 in 2013 (Oregon #12, La Salle #13, Florida Gulf Coast #15), does anyone know of any other year that has happened?

Guess we're one and done in the tourney. It's arguable but Seton Hall's resume seems to be a bit better than ours.

We made the tournament and won 1 game. This team has met my expectation. Looking forward to the next season!

IU beat Seton Hall in the simulation. Sweet Sixteen! 😄
