Bob Knight’s 2nd year, 1st Final Four, 3rd place 1973 Hoosiers take on his 10th year, 3rd Final Four, 2nd NCAA Champion 1981 team. FR Quinn Buckner vs. SO Isiah Thomas highlights the matchup.

Fresh off of dispatching 1992, 1976 looks to move on to the Final Four by beating their successors, the 1993 Hoosiers. Calbert Cheaney, Damon Bailey, and Alan Henderson have an additional year of experience and add future Big Ten POY FR Brian Evans to the team. Will it be enough to upend Scott May, Kent Benson, Quinn Buckner and the undefeated 1976 NCAA Champs?

I'll keep it simple in terms of your question.   NOPE ! Not only some of the greatest IU players of all time.  But '76  team had a coach, who at the time was fully engaged. None of the hunting, and fishing BS during the season. There's a reason why that team went undefeated.  Not dissing the other guys. But simply, the '76 team was the best.  Go on line. Many lists of the all time greatest teams in history have the 76 team at the top.

Did you know that Chuck Franz averaged more points per minute played than Randy Wittman did on the '81 team?  That's what Chuck's buddy reminded Knight of after this game after Chuck failed to get off the bench.  Knight shoved the man into a trash can.

The game itself was tight for the first half, but '81 pulled away after Q. Buckner went to the bench with his 4th foul at the 13:51 mark of the second half.  I' Thomas was just too much for the frosh Buckner to handle.

As far as the second game is concerned.  Man, I hate that this matchup has to occur before the Final 4.

The game itself is what you would have expected.  A tie game took a turn when Bobby Wilkerson was undercut on a breakaway, fell and hit his head on Alan Henderson's knee.  Wilkerson had to sit out the remainder of the game due to a concussion.  Meanwhile, Henderson's game and season ended with a serious knee injury.

'76 was able to overcome Wilkerson's injury, while '93 just wasn't the same without Henderson.  The perfect season continues.

I felt the same way about this match up occurring a round too soon. If I/we ever do this again in the future, I'll "seed" based on how far they made it this time around. I really wanted to vote for 93 since it may be my favorite team and I wasn't born for 76, but I just couldn't find a way to do it.

I was 10 ywars old in 76, and do remember the team.  But, like you, '93 may just be my favorite IU team.  Cheaney, G.Graham, Bailey, Henderson, and Evans are all players I really liked individually.  Throw in Pat Graham, who was injured much of the year, but a kid from my neck of the woods, and I don't think there has ever been a group of players I liked more.

The 93 team is by far my favorite. I was just old enough to really take it in.  And after the season most of the team, cant remember all of them, went on a barnstorming tour.

They played a game at the Hatchet house against a team of Hatchet alumni.  My dad was one of the officials and got me and a friend a seat under the baskets to be towel boys for my birthday that year. They let us hang out with them in the locker room at halftime.
