General Music Thread

IUFLA

Recommended Posts

@tdhoosier made an astute observation on the Movie Recommendation thread citing lack of a general Music thread, so I thought I'd start this...

My musical taste was shaped in the 60s and 70s by 3 radio stations... WNAP and WFBQ in Indy, and WLS out of Chicago. I listened to mainly rock...Zeppelin, The Beatles, Stones et al, probably like many of you. Over the years I've come to appreciate other genres...country, classical, jazz...but my roots are in rock...still my favorite...

About 3 years ago, I started a family subscription to Google Play Music streaming service...$15 a month for 6 family members. Stream as much as you want, when you want. So I started going down through The Rolling Stones 500 Greatest Albs of All Time

Found I had missed quite a bit of good music growing up...

Got to like Bowie, particularly "Hunky Dory" and "Ziggy Stardust."

Steve Earle's "Guitartown" is a great country/rock album.

Gained a better appreciation of Bob Dylan, especially " Blonde on Blonde" and "Nashville Skyline."

And discovered The Velvet Underground who were waaay before their time.

So, HSN, whatcha got for me to listen to?

I’m not sure where to start. Asking me what my favorite band is like asking Shawn Kemp who his favorite child is.

I grew up in the 90s, but love so many things that came out before that. I’ll listen to anything except that pop country stuff. I like a lot of current music and believe there’s a misconception that there isn’t good music out there any more. There is a ton of great music, it’s just harder to find because there’s so many outlets. Some of my favorite bands/artists of the last decade:

The War on Drugs - it’s like Springsteen meets Pink Floyd ethereal-ness
Father John Misty - Best lyricist out there right now, but the lyrics lyrics are oozed in sarcasm. Folky vibe (used to be the drummer in Fleet Foxes)
Jason Isbell - 2nd best lyricist out there right now. Americana country vibe. If you want to cry, listen to ‘Elephant’.
My Morning Jacket - My favorite live band. Dig their earlier stuff more though.
Whitney - 70s groove vibe. The guitarist is just insanely good - so clean and precise.
Khrungbin - Ambeint guitar music. The trio is just ridiculous. Great for background music that has a Latin feel; I’m obsessed with his guitar tone right now, it’s like a reverb drenched surf tone, but rich instead of twangy.
White Denim - Guitar rock at it’s finest .
White Reeper - If you just want some 70’s era riff driven rock.
Lord Huron - Not quite sure how to explain their sound because it’s pretty unique.

I’m forgetting so many others, but those are probably my most played.

OH - best album ever is Girl Talk - All Day. I’m pretty sure everybody I’ve introduced this to became obsessed; it’s like a journey through the history of rock, rap and pop. *free DL on illegalart.net

I'm all over the place music wise. I can go straight Metallica for a long time. I can switch to Shania or Rem....and everyone in between. Of course Mellencamp...but I'll also slide  into some Motley Crue/Poison/Dixie Chicks,etc....

If it's good. I'll listen to anything whether it's rock, country, rap,etc.....and for whatever reason I can tell whether a song is good within about 20 seconds.

I’m with you, my favorite radio station right now touts itself as 80’s, 90’s, and now. That’s a lot of music to cover.

Also like IUFLA came of age late 60’s early 70’s WLS all day long! That’s were my roots are. Particularly the blues rock genre! TJHoosier love you, but I have to say I have too much going on in my head, music is to help turn my brain off. Trying to understand the lyrics is the furthest thing for me. I guess that’s why I’m partial to blues rock and even straight up blues, it’s the emotion in the music that helps shut my brain down!

Good music is good music, regardless of the genre.

Bad music is bad music, regardless of the genre.

Some of my favorite songs are by artists I don't otherwise like,  For example, I don't like Guns N Roses, but Sweet Child O' Mine is my favorite rock song.

Some of the artists that I enjoy the most are:

  • The Beatles
  • Johnny Cash
  • Rihanna
  • Train
  • The Drifters
  • Marc Cohn
  • Merle Haggard

Grew up on rock, country, and psychedelic music as a child of the 1970s. As a teenager, I turned to heavy metal and punk.

As an adult I listen to everything under the sun, including pop and rap, but spend the most time listening to jazz albums on our turntable. I've come to like classical a great deal, especially string quartets and solo piano.

Have recently been obsessed with the newish Tool album. That got me back into a lot of stoner rock.

Couldn't agree more. I learned how to read and play music before I could read words. Played a few instruments all the way into college before giving it up. But music has had a life long,  impact on me. And,  good music can be found in virtually any genre. (except rap....that is not music)

To name a few without thinking too much and a good album to start with

Johnny Cash - live from folsom prison, american:IV

Eric Church - chief

Gary Allan - tough all over

Dwight Yoakam - guitars and cadillacs

Reo speedwagon  - hi infidelity

Matchbox 20 - yourself or someone like you

And if you've never listened to Rolling Stones exile on main street from beginning to end should give it a shot.

I listen to a alot of stuff mostly rock of all kinds and country (very little new stuff), just depends on my mood.

Give this a try. Jazzy at times. Psychedelic at times.

Yep, both of them! Especially the Iron Butterfly. My parents were hippies. 😛

Well then. Your parents most likely were Jimi fans

The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Purple Haze

And there still is a true Hippie community living in the mountains of Colorado. Drove through there a couple of years ago.

Yes, yes, yes...lots of "not so well known" Stones tunes on "Exile on Main St" starting with " Rocks Off" " Casino Boogie" "Sweet Virginia" and "Ventilator." Great all the way through...

My favorite Stones album  is "Let it Bleed" but EOMS and "Beggars Banquet" ("Prodigal Son" and " Stray Cat Blues" are great unknown Stones songs) are both great LPs.

Psychedelic, huh ?

These two had to be national anthems for you :

The Byrds- Eight Miles High

And the long version :

IRON BUTTERFLY - IN A GADDA DA VIDA

Nice Mile!

The Byrd's did an album after David Crosby left called "Sweetheart of the Rodeo" which is excellent, and deemed by many as the beginnings of Country Rock.

And legend has it the Iron Butterfly lead singer, Doug Ingle, was trying to say "In the Garden of Eden" but was too toasted to pronounce it...

IUFLA mentioned WLS out of Chicago.  When I was in high school. There was no hotter DJ in the country than Dick Biondi.

Dick Biondi

Documentary on legendary DJ Dick Biondi

Biodi, John "Records" Landecker, Bob Sirrot, Larry Lujack, Tommy Edwards...

And WNAPs Buster Bodine and Cris Connor...

ah, the memories...

Whew! I was afraid you were gonna try to get me to listen to Rap, against a jazz background. (can't even imagine that. Would be a good waste of jazz)

That wasn't bad. Thanx for posting.
