Open scholarship

Recommended Posts

Not sure if a thread has been made about this but now that Damezi is gone and we have open scholly thought it would be nice to track more efficiently what the staff does.

Just my two cents but I think if Justin and Race can’t develop an outside shot in the offseason I’d like for us to get a grad transfer stretch 4. I haven’t been a big fan of Trayce and Brunk playing together at the same time because it clogs the lane and unfortunately it’s not like watching Wendel Carter and Marvin Bagley together. I’m hoping Trayce bulks up because even though he’s only 6’9 I’d prefer to see him play center. Love what I saw from Brunk last year but unless there’s a bruiser down low he’s just a little too slow for what we’re trying to do on offense.

Idk, for every Evan Fitzner there’s a Max Bielfeldt. I definitely would like for it to be a grad transfer so we do have an extra scholarship for the 2021 class.

I just don’t see a harm in filling it with a grad transfer in general. Doesn’t hurt to have an extra practice player at the very least, especially with how injury plagued we constantly find this roster in

I don't think that's true. I think it's more of for every Max Bielfedt there are 5 Evan Fitzner (or maybe even 10). I think most grad transfers really don't work out the way everyone wants them to. Between what is usually an upgrade in competition and having a short time to learn to play with new teammates in a new system for new coaches, it's often too steep a curve for the player to be truly effective. I think the biggest thing that hurts them is the jump in competition so guys like Bielfedt and Brunk adjust better to the new team.

I'm guessing Fitz has made Archie a little more cautious about grad transfers. A scholarship or two in your pocket becomes very valuable and opens the door to a lot of options going forward.

Cautious, yes, but he did pick up Brunk after the Fitz mistake.

Proctor at PU good example. Averaged 19 at High Pt. 9 at PU despite padding avg in non-con and PU being desperate for scoring

Ryan Taylor it's another. Averaged 21 his final season at Evansville but only 9.8 for Northwestern and 8.1 in conference play. His numbers got worse the longer the season went on. Not only were his shooting stats down, but so were his rebounds and shooting percentage. He had the highest FT shooting percentage of his career but had only about 1/3 of the attempts from the year before.

I don't know Proctor and Taylor well enough to comment on what they brought to their teams, but you both seem to be describing exactly what should be hoped for from a grad transfer: a solid rotation player. Unless he's coming from a power conference it seems foolish to expect more than that, but if that rotation player fills a need, that is incredibly valuable.

Part of it is expectations. These guys come in with big numbers against lesser competition then get exposed in the B1G. I know the G&B crew were really disappointed with Proctor. Bielfeldt was the rare exception who had B1G experience and was very well coached

Archie tried the stretch 4 grad transfer route with Fitzner and it did not work.  I've got a feeling that Archie will more likely save that scholly for the 2021 class.

You could use it on a grad transfer SR and still have it for 2021

I agree. If a situational player wants to come here that won’t take away from the culture and understands his role then why not? If he doesn’t produce then he doesn’t produce; no harm no foul. At the very least more depth will be added for practices.

Maybe it’s just a matter of finding a grad transfer who will be fine with not getting a lot of minutes. 🤷‍♂️

This past year our rotation was 10 players (after CAM shortened the rotation by benching Damezi) and that felt about right to me. Trying to find minutes for three more guys who expect to play is very challenging. I understand you don't want to limit your team to 10 scholarship players because injuries happen - but 11 or 12 seems right to me. A happy locker room matters.

Agree! While there is a scholarship there, I think the only way to fill it and keep everyone happy would be to get a grad transfer specialist where the expectation amongst both parties is that they would be used situationally. There really isn't room on the roster for someone coming in expecting to play 15-20+ minutes per game.

There are 13 allowed scholarship players.  Here's my thinking.  Use them all.  Heaven only knows how many injuries we will suffer in any given year.  We have seen that already in recent years, way too many injuries.  Look at De'Ron and others who have missed games due to injury. Use a scholarship on a one year grad transfer.  Who can sit on the end of the bench, for goodness. Until and at least needed in game time.   And helps fill out during practice. Heck, Coach Crean had to use baseball players at one time to help out in practice. And even was forced to suit up a team manager for some games.  We get 13. Don't waist one.

Good on theory but how many grad transfers will want to come and sit on the bench.

Love ya Scott.  However back at you.  What grad transfer would not want to get a grad degree from Indiana University, while wearing Candy Stripes ?

Hey... man.  Hope you are still staying safe, and doing well.   Continue to take care.

To me there is no reason to have 13 scholarship players on your roster.  There is no way to keep everyone happy and that is why we see so many transfers.  I would think most players are competitive and won't be happy sitting the bench.

For me I think a rotation of 8 players is the ideal situation so that leaves5 players nothing playing big minutes if you have 13 players.  Watching a lot of old IU games there were times RMK only had 10 or 12 players on his roster.

Unless there’s a three point shooting stud of a player out there, just hold the scholly imo.

I love you both. PW and Scott.  However, got to disagree.  If not for having an experienced grad player on the roster for practice purposes.  And to fill in, if we ever have an overabundance of injuries, as we have suffered through in the past.  IMHO. There is no good reason to waist a scholarship if there is a  one year grad transfer, regardless of shooting ability.

I would happily take a Nick Zeisloft for one year.  But he has to shoot 40% minimum from the arc.

LOL...don't take this the wrong way.  Your ask for a stretch 4 makes it sound like they're easy to find.  😁
