Justin Smith transferring

I really hate to say this, but I'm actually kind of excited about this news. It sounds awful, and again I really don't want to come off as bashing Smith, but I'm excited by the prospects of more time for guys like Race Thompson, Jerome Hunter and Geronimo. I realize they don't all play the same position, but there will be a trickle down effect of minutes and times where IU plays a little smaller with Hunter, etc.

Again, you hate to lose an experienced senior, but I'm excited by the prospects of some of these guys playing more. I think there's more grit, more focus and more upside with these other guys.

this is where i am.  i think it may hurt just a little, but i'm not sure it doesn't help in more ways.  probably better chemistry.  he will be looking to prove he can shoot outside and he can't.  plus his dad causes drama at the very least.  i still find it hard to believe he wasn't some drama himself.  we are not thin roster wise.  we still have 8 solid guys who can play major minutes.  you really only need 9 in a close game.  1 of the other 3 freshmen could definitely surprise.  this news doesn't make me change my expectations for next year at all.

I'll just leave it like this (until I jump back in again 😀)...

It's never ideal to lose a senior who would be a 3-year starter and averaged 30 mpg, and was one of, if not your best, defenders. No, that's not ideal or good to have happen.

With that said, Justin Smith is a solid, serviceable player, but unlike in years past IU has the roster pieces to replace him without missing too much of a beat. While being a +defender, Smith had some pretty big deficiencies in his game. What he adds on one end, he tends to takeaway on the other end and there's an argument to made that replacing him with guys that maybe are a little weaker defensively but much better offensively is a win or at worst a push.

I'd prefer he was staying, but I think the opportunity this opens for guys like Hunter, Franklin, Thompson, Geronimo, etc. make this a wash at worst for this coming season and it's probably best for those guys to get more playing time now for future seasons.

I think they told him he's a bad shooter, dribbler and ball handler.

Undoubtedly...

We agree on Justin's skillet, but apparently don't see eye to eye on A) How he was going to be used this year, and B) What prompted him to leave.

So your thought is, he was going to be replaced in the lineup by...Hunter or Lander? Or Joey was going to be replaced by one of those 2, and Justin would be relegated to the 4 along side TJD playing (out if position, I'd say) the 5?

I agree with your assessment of Justin's defense, but it's still not even close between him and Jerome.

Like I said, I don't know if I believe CAM, after watching him for 3 years, would replace either player in the starting lineup. You seem to want to anoint Jerome Hunter (and believe me, I'd like nothing more than seeing him make huge strides this year) or a kid who's not as yet played a minute of college basketball.

As I said, I'm very skeptical of that.

I guess bottom line is, again, the NBA told him what he needed to do to make it to the next level. And he wasn't going to get the chance to do that in practice or in games at Indiana...

With everything we’ve seen over the last three years, are we really still this concerned about the defense?  Improving the offense has to be the number one goal, and Smith transferring does that.

Amen. I said this in my post too before catching up and reading. We've had so many stretches of no FG's. Hate to see Justin leave but man this helps on other end.

I don’t get why Justin is transferring. He averaged 30 minutes per game last year, which is the most on the team. He would’ve averaged the 2nd or 3rd most minutes on the team IMO. He has bad people in his ear.

Or maybe he just wants to move on and play in a different part of the country...different conference and coach.  I can see some Peyton Ramsey in this.  OK...It might be a stretch, but it could be seen as similar.

I see essentially zero similarities lol

Leaving now when we're on the verge says more about Smith (and his Dad) than anything else. Actually to me gives more weight to the idea there were a few problems on the team that we as fans have witnessed and of course Odle echoed during last year. Again...I'm not going to say this won't hurt on defense but both sides met, spoke their sides and sounds like Archie basically said this is how we're going to use you this year....and Justin had other ideas. If he wants to head to Depaul or Georgia or another Big 10 school to showcase his inner George Gervin he believes he has......he's welcome to try.

Certainly sounds reasonable.  I'm just not upset about the move.  He got his degree and has an idea of what comes next for him.  That's fine.

Honestly, I'm really confused at where you stand here. I'm not trying to be glib, I really just am not following you. You think Archie was going to be unwilling to change the lineup, meaning Smith was going to continue to start and play big minutes on the perimeter. But you also think Smith is transferring because of lack of opportunity on the perimeter?

My opinion is Justin Smith is transferring because for some reason he thinks he needs to be a pure perimeter player and he wasn't going to be able to do that at IU next season, and rightfully so. Why wasn't he going to be able to do that? Because he was given the chance by Archie last season and it was a huge disaster.

As far as the starting lineup, none of us knows what would have happened. My opinion is Smith was going to move the 4 and Brunk was going to come off the bench, which happened in game (not to the starting lineup) much more towards the end of last season as Hunter emerged.

Not sure where you're getting that I'm "anointing" Hunter. You must have missed my posts either eariler today or yesterday where I agree with 5fouls (i think it was him) that Hunter hasn't show much more than being a 3pt specialist at this point and that he's going to have to expand his game offensively.

Edit: Completely agree on the bolded. I think we're sort of saying the same thing, other than the starting lineup thing, just coming at it from a different angle.

Coach Miller's public statement aside.  I am sure he is not upset about Justin's decision to transfer, either.

He honestly should go to GA.  He's already good defensively and he won't have to do any of that there.  He'll be free to run and gun and jack 3s all game which is apparently what he wants.

Didn't Ramsey quit on his team as well

Sure. He's a stud though. Like as in tough, smart, physical. Be like the opposite of what the basketball team got from Smith lol

But if you cant differinate thats on you.

Agreed. Hate to see him go, but I think IU will be just fine. I do feel like IU will be just fine without him, and that Jerome and Race will take his minutes and then some with their constant development.
