IU Players in the Pros

Recommended Posts

Thought it would be nice to have a thread devoted to IU players in the Pros.  We can track their seasons here.

This first post will highlight those at the MLB level.  I'll try to capture all the minor leaguers in a different post below.

Using baseball reference as a resource, there are 4 former IU position players and 1 pitcher that played in the majors last year.

  • Alex Dickerson (Giants) - Had somewhat of a breakthrough performance after being traded from Padres during the season
  • Josh Phegley - (Cubs) - Non roster invitee for Cubs after spending least several seasons with A's.  Senior member of the IU contingent.
  • Kyle Schwarber (Cubs) - DH in NL for 2020 may increase his at bats.  Swatted 38 bombs last year.
  • Sam Travis (Rangers) - Non roster invitee for Texas after spending parts of last 3 seasons with Red Sox.  Was batting .467 this spring before play was suspended.
  • Aaron Slegers - (Rays) - Non roster invitee for Tampa Bay.  Has pitched in 9 big league games over last 3 seasons with a 1-2 career record.

Not sure about the accuracy of this list, so if anyone has updates or corrections, please feel free to share.  I've only listed players that saw action in 2019.  So, if they were drafted and did not play last year, they are not listed.

  • Matt Gorski (2019) - Pirates organization
  • Andrew Saalfrank (2019) - Diamondbacks organization
  • Tanner Gordon (2019) - Braves organization
  • Matt Lloyd (2019) - Reds organization
  • Paul Milto (2019) - White Sox organization
  • Cam Beauchamp (2019) - Phillies organization
  • Cade Bunnell (2019) - Braves organization
  • Jonathan Stiever (2018) - White Sox organization
  • Luke Miller (2018) - Phillies organization
  • Logan Sowers (2018) - White Sox organization
  • Tim Herrin (2018) - Indians organization
  • Craig Dedelow (2017) - White Sox organization
  • Caleb Baragar (2016) - Giants organization
  • Kyle Hart (2016) - Red Sox organization
  • Scott Effross (2015) - Cubs organization
  • Ryan Halstead (2015) - Giants organization

I was surprised that Joey DeNato from the 2014 CWS team is no longer active.  His minor league stats were very solid as a left handed relief specialist.  I guess he just didn't throw hard enough.

@5fouls this is awesome!! Great job!

Schwarber had a big time year. 38R 92RBIs .250avg .340obp. That's big time.

Gorski is a game changer athletically.

Stiever is well on his way to getting a call up.

White Sox seem to think highly of IU products.  Anyone have any insight as to why they draft so many Hoosiers?  If I recall correctly, Phegley came up through their organization as well.

Travis? Hart? Slegers? Could we have 7 guys in the bigs?

Looks like Hart/Slegers didn't make it, but are close. Travis wasn't on the 60 man.

Just noticed that Phegley is with Cubs organization as a non-roster invitee.  Did not realize the A's had let him go.  Updated the original post.

Appears Cubs going with 3 catchers although I'm sure Phegley will also be a DH guy as well. Glad to have another Hoosier with the Cubs!
