August 16th, 1946 Babe Ruth, "The Sultan of Swat", "The Bambino", dies at 53 from  throat cancer...

And 1977 Elvis Pressley dies...

A couple of American icons...

I was watching the death of Elvis in the very house I live in now.

I never knew Babe died so young. Maybe it's because of who he is or his legend.....but 53? Wow.

My grandma was at Elvis's last concert in Indy.

My best friend from high school was a HUGE Elvis fan. We went to Graceland on a spring break and visited Sun Studios. TCB

We also drove down to Tupelo, MS to see the house he grew up in.

One of the things that made The Babe so mythical the was that in 1920, he hit 54 homes runs, which broke the previous record (29 set by Ruth the year before...the modern day (after 1904) record before that was Gabby Cravath with 24) which were more home runs than any other team in the American League! And only one team in the NL (Philles with 64) hit more...

"Some twenty years ago I stopped talking about the Babe (Ruth) for the simple reason that I realized that those who had never seen him didn't believe me." - Tommy Holmes

Elvis would fly to Denver for peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.  And when ever he came to Denver, the then head of the Denver police department would assign a contingent of officers to protect him.  Elvis was so great full of that...... that he bought a brand new Cadillac for the then head of the Denver police department.

Elvis Presley’s “Fool’s Gold” sandwich was born in Denver – The Denver Post

At that time, I had been friends of the owner of the Cadillac dealership that Elvis bought the Cadillac from.  The stories..... Elvis would meet my friend in the middle of the night.. at the dealership....to purchase more cars for more police officers.  Always wrote a check.  Checks always cleared.  Then my friend got a call from Elvis.  Just before Elvis died.  Said he would coming to Denver to buy 32 more Cadillacs for more Denver police officers,  in two weeks.  Elvis died.  And when my friend told me that story.... and excuse my language.... said... "the SOB died on me."

I never met Elvis.  But I once did shake the hand of an Elvis impersonator in the Flamingo casino in Las Vegas.

One of my favorite Elvis songs :

Let It Be Me
