The Derby

Recommended Posts

Trying to cancel our reservations at Sam Houston Race Track for today. Supposed to rain all day, and it'll probably cancel some of the live racing. We had a reservation at the Winner's Circle restaurant for the buffet, which is usually pretty good, but trying to move rose to Mother's Day at my wife's request.

Always stinks when Mother Nature hits. Only about 3-4 days a year I pray for good weather. Derby Day, Carb Day, Race Day, and 4th of July. The rest I can handle but those 4 need to be blue skies.

Make the most of it. Create a TVG account. Bet some ponies and watch 9 hours of prerace coverage??? Haha.

Sipping on a julep and I think Midnight Bourbon is only appropriate

My pick as well! Only I'm forgoing the julep for some Mellow Corn, neat. I've never tried it, and at $20 for 750 ml, it ain't half bad.

Big trouble brewing for Mr. Baffert.  Banned from Churchill Downs for now...his horses, that is.  Derby winner failed post race drug test and faces DQ.

Just seen this in the news...big trouble indeed.

I likes Soup & Sandwich because, well..... the wifey liked the name!!

I just know that for next years' Derby, I'll pick the horse that is trained by Bob Baffert, the guy must have some kind of magic.

YIKES!!

Looks like there was more than magic involved??? Seems like people look for an advantage to win, no matter what the sport is.

A major drug scandal in horse racing could be even more destructive to the sport than the one in baseball.  To have the winning horse in the biggest race of the year be under scrutiny for doping will be a stain that will take years to overcome.

Honestly, I hope Churchill Downs never lets Baffert back.  The Derby means everything to the Louisville community.  This makes 3 straight years where the race has been tainted.  In 2019, the winner got disqualified for interference.  Last year, the race may have eventually been ran, but Covid ruined it nonetheless.    This year was supposed to be a celebration of new hope.  The race itself was memorable, one of the best in recent memory, with so many horses right there until the end.  Baffert's actions stole that moment from the fans and the community

Seems to me some are really wanting to get out the "we have to protect the sport" angle on Baffert. The Derby will be just fine. Just as it has been for 100+ years. To me I feel like this is more personal to Baffert. Envious of success, etc...time will tell for sure but when the media has their narrative and all are running with it? Tells me they want Baffert to go down....and go down hard. It's strangely feeling like an NFL vs Al Davis thing here.

I knew a small time horse trainer.  He was a high level athletic trainer just breaking into horse training.  Humongous money.

He said he knew historically horse racing was basically athlete slavery and experimentation.  Steroids and amphetamines were very standard practice.  If there are no stories or documentaries on it I would be shocked.  I grew up near Louisville and I always was understanding it was common knowledge there was drugs, doping, etc in horse racing.

This article even mentions frog venom and Viagra.

Yeah, we knew that.  That's why she's so pissed.  Her friend's father is close to the guy who vet checks derby horses and he said before the race that Mandaloun was the best built horse in the Derby.

Wonder if there can be a class action against Baffert if this holds for a DQ?
