Galloway a starter ..

I mentioned him as a possible, surprise starter in a past post. Could be a good defensive role to allow less pressure on Rob/Al/Lander so that they focus more on shooting

Tell me who's minutes he will take at the start of the season out of Rob, Al, Lander, Hunter, TJD, Race, or Brunk. I don't see it. You also have Franklin right behind them. I'm a fan of Galloway and think he'll get some playing time but I still think it's a stretch for him to be a starter at the start of the season.

Realistically, he is not going to start. Barring a real injury to a key player or players, starters will be TJD, Lander, Rob, Al and probably Race (maybe Hunter). That's leaving aside that it's unlikely to see 2 frosh starters under CAM and with this returning group of vets. There's also Geronimo, who has gotten a significant amount of pub over the summer including comments from CAM, and considering his D, ridiculous athleticism and college - ready build, he seems likely to be worked in to pretty decent minutes. But it is great to hear such good things about Galloway, and if these hold up he should work his way into minutes as well, a very good thing.

~ was just a "surprise" hypothetical (for fun). However, him getting playtime at the 3 does make some sort of sense. There's a chance we will be more perimeter-oriented this year and he 'might' be able to play better D, take care of the ball, pass, and shoot better than Al or Jerome. It's all about the right combination on the perimeter, let alone everyone on the floor... just fun and games

I don't think we can totally dismiss the concept of him starting.  The returning backcourt players may have more experience, but they are all flawed.  If Galloway is consistently out-performing those guys in practice, it is something Archie would have to consider.

Wait who said he is consistently out-performing the vet starters? Not yanking you’re chain but that’s not the dialogue

Hence the word 'if'.  No, the OP did not specifically say it.  But, if there is at least dialogue that he could start, then he's outperforming someone.  Otherwise, as a freshman, the subject of possibly starting would not even be discussed.

Reports from practice are that Galloway is tearing it up. He is obv a coaches kid and just a straight killer. Seems like Archie's type of player. A lot of people over the past week are indicating that it seems like he very well may end up starting. Makes for a few interesting lineup options.

Rob

Al

Galloway

Hunter

TJD

Rob

Al

Lander

Galloway

TJD

The Archie Special

Rob

Al

Galloway

Brunk

TJD

I had a ref who saw him play A LOT tell me he will have a bigger impact in year 1 than Romeo.... I chuckled a bit, and he said he was dead serious. Not necessarily PPG, but he's going to fill the stat sheet.

If, at 54, I could outplay Hunter, and have Yogi make me a fake ID, I might start on the wing at IU.

Everyone assumes that Rob will start.  With Lander being the defacto PG, you have to determine who is the better player to put at the 2?  Al or Rob.  I personally don;t think robs is as advertised.  His growth has been flat year to year and it seems Al get better, so i could see maybe Al being the 2, Hunter the 3, and Race and TJD as the 4 and 5.  With Rob first off the bench to spell Al or Lander

Rob will start if healthy, that’s been the issue for him, though also with high TO’s last season - probably partly related to the abdominal health issues he went through. He finished the year strong.

The team is looking to play a 3-guard look, with multiple ball handlers. That’s Lander, Rob, Al.
Al has improved every year, started every year, and been the most consistent outside shooter. He’ll start.

Now that I've had a cup of coffee I realize I misread half of your post, lol. Somehow first read it as you're picking between Hunter and Al at the 2. So editing my original post. I think rob is as  advertised, but has been repeatedly injured or not healthy, concussion protocol, abdominal, etc. He's strong on ball generally (but had high TO's last season, probably in part because he wasn't fully healthy until the end of the season), and he finished the year strong, and is one of the best defenders on the team.

I can see the lineups changing during the season and for certain games, but do think, assuming Rob's health, we'll see first Lander, Rob, Al, Race and TJD, then Lander, Rob, Al, Hunter, TJD, and other sets with a small ball / get out and run look. And the more Hunter plays the better he will shoot, in the rhythm of the game, and the better we’ll be from deep -- but I hope CAM is ready to allow more outside shooting and not just rely on a more mobile unit and limiting TO's to spread the floor.

Rob has had a series of misfortunes in his first 2 years. Every time he begins to get healthy we get glimpses of how good he can be. The problem is that it’s been a series of “1 step forward and 2 steps back”. I think the only way Rob doesn’t see the starting line up will be due to health reasons. And I think he’s the most important player on this team......not the best, but the most important. When healthy he’s show that he is our strongest and best ball defender (possibly one of the best in the B1G). Also, when healthy the team looks to be the most in control when he’s at the point.

Now, if he can just shake off the ‘when healthy’ caveat.

Man I'd love for Rob to take a leap like it seems Michigan guards always do.

If he can shoot better than Al or Jerome he will play a lot. It's pretty easy to envision Al and Jerome both shooting north of 40% from three this season.

Let's put it this way.  In a 3 guard lineup of Rob, Lander, and Al, my opinion is that Rob is the most vulnerable if someone else would step up and take a starting spot.

I think if all you're looking at is outside shooting, and even then I'm hesitant to say Al is a better 3 point shooter than Rob considering the injury factor, you may be right...But I think Rob is better in other facets of the game. As I said, I think he's the best on the ball defender we have...In my opinion he's better at going to the hoop (and with the emphasis on opening up the lane, that could pay big dividends) his assist to turnover ratio is better. Rob is a better rebounder and ball handler than Al, and if we want to get out and run more, those are all points in Rob's favor...

But, I think both Al and Rob, along with Kristian, will be starting...at least at the beginning of the season...

I'm a pretty big believer in analytics (sorry @IU Scott) and, among rotation guys last season,  Rob ranked 8th in both PER and W/S per 40 minutes (ahead of only Jerome and Armaan in both).  Al was 6th in PER and 3rd in W/S per 40.

The problem, among other things, with just pulling up season analytics is, again, Rob was not healthy for much of the year. Looking at PER, and over the year, gets you only so far. How was Rob's D? How did Rob run the team down the stretch? Were we winning down the stretch? (Yes, we were). Etc.

Here's the same stats for conference only.  Rob positioned similarly, actually ranks a couple spots lower in W/S per 40.

Interesting that De'Ron was the only player to have an 'analytically' better conference season than non-conference.

Interesting is right, and reflective of how limited this kind of analysis is. How many minutes did De'Ron play? How much impact did he actually have on our conference games? What was his role? Or Green has a PER of 14.2. You want Green running the point for IU? Is Green better on point than Rob? You want to break down Green's contributions and deficiencies over the season? There's a place for analytics, I'm not an analytics hater but I don't buy, at all, just pulling up analytics stats and saying see, Rob had a lower PER. That's really limited.

Cooper Bybee should be starting! :D

I don't know how they figure stats like PER and WS, so I'll reserve comment by pleading ignorance (won't be the first time)...

But just using your own observations and supporting that with individual stats, what phases of the game do you think Al is better at than Rob?

Ball handling?

Passing?

Defense?

Rebounding?

Initially I'd say at driving the ball since Al seemed to be the only one who was being aggressive at times, but again when healthy, Rob's bread an butter was driving the ball. And if my memory serves me right, Rob was starting to do that again in the final 5 or 6 games last season. Plus with all that muscle he put on, he should be able to bully most guards in the conference.

I hope they both are aggressive in that area along with Lander. Difference between the 2 is that Al always ends up on his a$$.....he's like a pinball. Rob looks like he's going to be a bulldozer.

Just based on my own observation, I always thought Rob, when healthy, was superior at getting to the rim...Strong, and can jump pretty well too...I thought when he was a freshman, one of the upper classmen said Rob was the strongest freshmen he'd ever seen even then...

I always thought Al was more looking for the foul call when he took it in...Hence the "ends up on his a$$" you mentioned...
