Coach Mike Woodson Megathread

Also, old-timers like Jack Keefer at Lawrence North will approve of this hire, and other long-time coaches of influence in State.  Big key is running an offense today’s player is excited to join.

I think that he will entice a lot of high profile players to come, considering his NBA schematics.

What do you want to see in assistants/staff?

A big time recruiter with relevant connections today, someone with recent success.

Someone younger would be nice but it is not the most important factor. I've seem others mention Michael Lewis. I read Kenya Hunter may stay on. I'd still like to see Dane Fife brought in as the lead/heir apparent.

An Xs and Os guy or a specialist on shooting. Again, someone with recent success.

Maybe another NBA coach/former player to appeal to recruits. This only works if they can truly coach or recruit.

I like that Matta is on board to help Woodson navigate the college game.

Keith Smart on the bench would be interesting, if he would be open to it.

It's wide open but will be crucial to have the right coaching staff surrounding MW.

I really hope this works I love Indiana Basketball so much it has been hard to watch us slide for so many years. Not the coach I was hoping for Matta makes it a little easier but I was thinking of 5 or 6 others I would rather see lead the Hoosiers. Go Hoosiers

I’ll start by saying I share the disappointment in the hire. I think we could have found a way to land a more proven coach in the CBB realm. But for all I know, Dolson tried his best to land a Stevens/Drew/Beard/Muss like we all wanted but they all said thanks no thanks. Let’s keep it real, the IU job is not for everyone and unless you’re offering Cal/Coach K $, probably weren’t going to land a coach we’d consider a “home run.”

We will likely never know how high/low on that list Woodson was. But what I do know is that it wasn’t my $10 mill being spent and I didn’t have to waste time/energy doing the search.

What needs to be addressed though, is that some of you really need to take some time away from IU basketball. There’s as many reasons to get behind Woodson as there are reasons to ridicule, and it’s your choice on which path you take. For all the love and passion you have towards IU basketball, maybe use that in a healthy manner by supporting a man who not only helped build IU to what it is today but also WANTS THIS JOB (which isn’t easy to come by, clearly).

What’s done is done my friends. If you don’t want to support IU basketball because you aren’t emotionally mature enough to handle patience and inconsistencies, please feel free to spend your time and money on a BTN Plus subscription and you can watch all the 76’ Hoosier games on a loop.

i'm just trying to figure out if Dolson did this solely to make the former IU players happy?  did we strike out on that many other candidates?  does he really think Woodson is the guy?  just wondering what the real reason behind this is.  i love Matta coming on, but if this is the best we could do, and we can get Matta in this role, why not Lewis or Fife?  i guess we should start talking about the buyout?

Everyone keeps forgetting the two big donors.  One to buyout, one to pay the new coach. I would bet my house, the only options were Stevens or an IU guy. I think they got the coach who fell into their requirements

We have an actual IU AD, being funded by two actual IU donors. This hire makes complete sense

It was done to please the people with the most influence on the basketball program. Big donors and former players are the driving force behind this hire. Money talks and let’s hope it brings success

If he wins, all these people complaining will be silent, simple as that.  Can’t wait to see him prove the naysayers wrong.

I agree but that can be said for any coach at any program in the country. I hope he does prove people wrong and  I feel luckily we have Matta and I wish he was the head coach

Agree..don't forget I believe Woodson is a co-investor with  Steve Ferguson at Cook Group and Scott May in IU housing.  Woodie has pushed for the job before.  I am sure that influence was "part" of this deal getting done.  If NOT Stevens, then going to be "my" IU guy.

Why Fife?  Just curious. People suggest the other guys on the MSU staff are considered better than he is.

Lewis intrigues me more personally.
