Assistant Coaches??

If I were guessing....it's similar to what Glass did to Wilson. AD hired a law firm to get the goods (be able to fire for cause) because so many players were having issues.

Probably right, and he doesn’t have to take any ownership either. UC people can’t stand their AD. That speaks volumes.

I fully expect Lewis to join the IU staff.

If Lewis is the guy they want to be coach in waiting we can pay him what he would make as a kid major head coach and tell him every couple years we will give you a raise to make sure you’re happy. Especially since we aren’t paying Woodson nearly what we would’ve paid top coaches so we can absolutely get donors to chip in if they believe Lewis is the guy in waiting and Lewis wants to be the guy in waiting to where he won’t bounce after 4-5 years.

No inside info, but I see another assistant hire in a couple of days

Now this might be a bad side of the brain working here but once we name an assistant....that assistant has to follow all of the rules immediately. If he's not an employee I'm assuming they can contact recruits as much as they want, right?

Just thinking this out. I remember when Urban took time off from Florida. Coaches said Urban had been recruiting for 2 years....just not for the NCAA and their rulebook. Unlimited access to players/programs without any restrictions.

I'm not saying we should do that....but there are some pros to delaying.

I like the move for Fife, if true.  He’s been in the league and he knows the coaches and teams.  That can be a huge asset for Woody who obviously has not been in the league.  He’s also recruited in the area.  He’s learned from Izzo and can bring that perspective.

Most importantly, I like developing an in house coaching candidate. This is the path that UNC seems to be on and it’d be nice if we had an in-house candidate on the rise too.  Maybe we can avoid being rudderless in a future coaching search.

From Dane’s point of view, he’s learned what he could from Izzo.  He’s also obviously been coached by Knight. By coming here, he can get exposure to an NBA coach and his approach but also get around Thad Matta and possibly others.  It can make him more well rounded in his experience. Plus it is his alma mater and he’s an IU guy.  I see a win-win.

I was thinking same, from a professional point of view, Fife’s resume would look much better if it showed time at multiple places from well respected coaches instead of all his experience being with one coach. Different styles and methods.

Great points. Plus Fife is just a funny guy and great story-teller. He could host his own assistant coaching show; I’d definitely tune in!

Either Fife or Lewis would be great. I'm more familiar with Fife with him being in the Big Ten, but understand both has a certain skill set which would be helpful to Woody. It will probably just boil down to which one Woody thinks will blend into his staff best, and/or which skill set is needed more. I think both can do well and it will be interesting to see how this shakes out. I'm assuming we will hear something in next couple days regarding the staff choices.

From reading various articles, it seems Fife is more of a defensive specialist, and Lewis is an offensive specialist.  If we're running the program like Bama football now, bring them both and let them each focus on their specialty. Let Hunter lead recruiting with Lewis and Fife assisting based on relationships and area. Love it.

At first I did not think we would have Fife and Lewis both but could we end up Hunter, Turner, Lewis and Fife with Roberts as DOBO. thinking it could happen

That would be amazing if it happens. 2 options for next HC some day.

Edit: Wouldn't that be a demotion for Roberts?

Are you thinking or hearing they could create a position (non assistant for one of Turner/Lewis/Fife) since only 3 assistants are allowed per NCAA?

Yes, however he is unlikely to keep his assistant position from what I have heard. DOBO would allow him to stay in Bloomington if that’s what he wants/may be his best current offer (if it’s even on the table).

Great question.  I did not think of that maybe I misunderstood what I heard maybe it's either Fife or Lewis . That's what I heard on Friday over the weekend was hearing both with Hunter and Turner. Not sure
