Assistant Coaches??

Very good interview. Dane is smart, insightful, and is great with the English language.  Few things I recall:

  • IU hasn’t gotten it right the past 20 years because they’ve tried to re-brand. It hasn’t worked.  Woody is going to reconnect us with our brand.
  • Woody and Matta called him last week.  Great call. Goals lined up.  Fife had never been offered a job at IU before.
  • Izzo was classy in letting him go.  He totally understood that Dane is an IU guy.  Izzo said maybe you can take over when Woody leaves.  Fife said that is not necessarily why he took the job (obviously would be open to it).
  • Woody will have to learn the college game. It was interesting that his tone was he’d have to tell Woody some stuff.  Parents are a big difference between college and pros.  Told a story about his own dad being upset when he didn’t play at Purdue his freshman year.  IU won but Mr Fife, himself a coach, wanted to blame the staff.  Dane stood up to his dad and told him he had been sucking at practice.  Dane says this kind of thing gives him insight into the players’ thought process.
  • This is Indiana. We are esteemed and aren’t going to beg any players to come back or to be recruited.
  • In recruiting you have to be honest.  Tell the player the truth and what they need to work on.  Gave an example of Xavier Tillman. Tillman didn’t like their honesty but his mom loved it.
  • Next assistant coach might have IU ties.  Fife seemed to like that idea but it was vague.
  • Told some stories about being recruited by Knight.  Fife was also a top QB in high school so Knight tried to convince him he had a better shot in basketball.  Dakich said Knight tried to say at 6’5 he wasn’t big enough to play QB in the NFL which didn’t make sense.  Fife said Knight showed him his calf and told Fife he would get broken in half because he didn’t have calves like that.  Fife said Knight compared him to Randy Wittmann.   Fife talked to Randy today and told him be thinks Knight meant as a coach.

What i also found interesting.......Mike Roberts was still on the staff and didnt seem to be leaving with Dane sleeping on his couch.  Dane seemed to know who the 3rd coach was but didnt say.

I can attest its beautiful. I work downtown Naples but I live in Estero because the housing costs are astronomical...and I bought over a year ago before SW Florida became the hottest real estate market in the country. We have realters mailing us everyday asking us to sell and homes are selling 10-15% over asking price. I was told my house could fetch another 40k over what I bought it for last year (but where would I go??) It's wonderful that we basically haven't had all our freedoms destroyed and been almost entirely open since the pandemic started. Add the sun, the beach, probably more restaurants per capita than anywhere I've ever been and its pretty nice! I just hope all the people moving down here to get away from their high taxes and their govt overreach leave their politics back north with them so we can continue to live in the "paradise" we all came here for. If anyone knows of an IU hangout for game days let me know. I'd love to meet up with fun IU fans....once we are winning again.....for now I choose to watch at home where I can be miserable and complain all I want in peace.

Love it here buddy!  I live in North Naples.  There is an IU bar in Fort Myers Beach.  We will have to meet up for games.  FGCU can be a lot of fun too.  That Sweet Sixteen run was a blast.  Love that banner hanging in Alico Arena.

Moved to the Bradenton/Lakewood Ranch area last year and have had the same experience.

uh, yeah all of this makes me very jealous.  NC is ridiculous.  i'll see if my dad knows of anywhere, but i think all they have managed is a Colts bar to gather at.

Oh, there is a big IU alumni association in Naples!  Before COVID they met for games at Bokampers off Vanderbilt Beach Road. Just FYI !  I’ve lived here for 18yrs now.

Yeah....haven't gotten out much since I have a two year old but for sure when we start winning ball games I will show my face in IU gear again!

Yeah I'm off Corkscrew just down past Stoneybrook...very quick drive over to FGCU. I promised I would try to catch the Brown kid when Stetson plays them next year if he is getting playing time. In-laws moved up from Naples to Bonita a couple years ago to get a bigger house. Came down so they could be around their grand daughter all the time and then later on we could look after them when they need the help in a few more years. Let's hang another banner in the HALL soon!!

Hey, can you nice weather people just knock it off?  Here's a typical July day in my neighborhood.  We like to enjoy the balmy outdoors before the serious snow starts in September.

😄  I won't lie....several things I miss about Indiana......deer hunting, fall sports, and family. Scraping windows and shoveling driveways is not one of them lol!!

Not an alum...I got full ride to go to USI...well more than a full ride as I had so many scholarships etc I got paid to go there. My dad worked in Bloomington for over 30 years so I grew up around Bloomington and IU basketball was a religion in our home. But if they are open to a fellow Hoosier than I may have to go catch a game on my way home from work if my wife gives me permission. Or they have one of these in the bar. 😉

I don't know about any IU hangouts but I know when I stayed in Cape Coral there was a mostly Colts Bar right off of Santa Barbara. That's been about ten years ago so might not be there now.

My cousin is moving to Estero.  Could be your new neighbor.  Here's a picture.  Let me know if you see him around.

You sure he hasn’t come down already...I saw on the news there was a Florida man arrested for molesting a tree 🌳 the other day....might have been him!

Been there done that and paid my dues. Until last year, I lived my first 59 years in the Midwest, including in the snow belt of NE Ohio and the frozen tundra of Iowa. But mostly in central and eastern Indiana. Where I am now, the average high in Dec-Feb is 72, with average lows in the 50s. Plus the sun is out nearly every day. But I advise against anyone else moving here. 😀

No...I work for a financial institution downtown.

I will say this....I go over to Btown Banners to look for any recruiting news from time to time. Dang 90% of us would never make it on that site. They had like 1 off topic post in a thread and the admins come swooping in demanding everyone get back in line lol. Great IU fans...but dang they are like thread nazis over there lol.
