He also moved up 4 spots to be the #9 ranked SG in the nation. Now has a 0.9822 composite rating, up from 0.9788. Will have a good chance of being a 5-star in the composite when the new 2021 rankings from 247 come out. What a find. More importantly seems like a great kid.
Popular Post Between2Halls
Rivals ranks Bates to IU the top recruiting story of the week. A case can be made that Tamar Batessigning with Indiana is the most important story of the late period. Yes, more important than the No. 1 overall Chet Holmgren choosing Gonzaga. Yes, bigger than whatever ends up happening with No. 3 overall Patrick Baldwin Jr., the nation's top uncommitted player. What makes Bates-to-Bloomington so intriguing isn’t Bates’ massive upside or really anything to do with him as a prospect. Instead, it’s what his commitment says about the Hoosiers’ coaching hire. The main question surrounding Indiana’s decision to tag Mike Woodson as the program’s new leader was whether or not the 63-year-old coach with next to no college experience would want to do what it takes to recruit on the sport’s highest level. A few weeks later he answered such questions by landing Bates, a former Texas commit that chose IU over Oklahoma State, Kentucky, Illinois, Washington and others. One commitment won’t make or break the Woodson Era, but it’s hard to imagine a better start when it comes to putting knee-jerk criticisms to rest. Sometimes lazy narratives are easy to dispel. Bates didn’t land in Woodson’s lap by accident, after all. https://t.co/cLCGpOrig5 Edited April 23, 2021 by Between2Halls 10

Add in the unaccounted for xfers of XJ and MK and it makes for a serious addition of talent. https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/insider/story/_/id/31256464/2021-men-college-basketball-recruiting-class-rankings-chet-holmgren-boosts-gonzaga-no-2 Have to have ESPN+ to access I think. Also, Bates at #23 is higher than any in-state (IN) recruit Archie missed on (43rd is highest). I think we more than made up for our loss of talent and done so in a much more diverse and versatile way. A lot of potential on this team. Woody is setting himself up for some pretty big expectations...I like it!

KDB
The new 247Sports 2021 player rankings came out today. Tamar was one of the biggest risers moving from #60 all the way up to #26. Bates is the highest rated 4-star recruit on both ESPN and 247Sports.

Amazing to me how little fanfare this commit is getting. Minus Gordon, Romeo, and Cody....he's got to be the highest ranked recruit in 20 years. JJ was probably in there too.

Between2Halls
Bates is the newcomer I am most excited to see on the court. Landing him was huge in my opinion. The competition at the guard spots on this team is going to be very good for this season.

Depends on the service. Some yes and some no....but that's kind of my point with this kid. He's in that category (or better) and barely a blurp page wise yet someone else chooses another school who is a borderline Big 10 caliber player and we've got triple the coverage, coaches missed,etc.... Bates is a stud and I'll be happy to have him call Bloomington home for 2 years. 10

As soon as we sign a 5* peoples expectations get all out of whack. Just let this kid come in and find a role and turn himself into a valuable asset next year. It's a roster with a lot of experience. ESPN and 247 have him right outside 5* so 35th on rivals would probably move him closet to 5* but not quite there. He'll probably be a burger boy, though.

Top 20 in the nation recruits, in the last 20 or so years ago, in order from the top: Gordon Langford Vonieh Zeller DJWhite Blackmon Yogi Bryant Lander probably would have stayed in top 20 if he did not leave HS early Jeffries was also probably there but he signed a year or two before the cutoff for the 247 rankings I looked at.
