Miller Kopp to IU

I say this with all respect because I enjoy your posts and think you bring good insight.  But aren’t you the one who was saying the board had a bunch of “old guys” who got too negative?

Now for some reason you want to die on this hill of negativity?

Come on, Kopp is a good addition.  And the best part is we are no longer a program that’s going to sit around hoping guys get better.  We are going to get competition at all times.  That’s the way it should be.  We’ve gotten way too patient.   I’ve said since the day Woody started that I liked the urgency to win every year and not wait for guys to bloom.  We’ve wasted way too many years.  That may be over now.

Is it another Knightism??? @ss to brain.....When a player's @ss gets put on the bench a message goes off in their brain saying get me off here! We are going to have some kids put in a situation they've never been in before. They are going to have to fight like dogs to earn their spot. At first they aren't going to like it...but then if they are a true competitor they are going to man up and win their spot...win their time. If they don't why play them because they won't have the will to win against our opponents. Some might leave...and we will be just fine without them...others will stay and fight..and that is who I want going into battle (proverbial) with. Iron sharpens Iron...practicing against the best will make playing in a game feel like a breeze! I thank God that Woody seems to be bringing in competition for the players...IU has had too many pretty boys for several years. Guys have been WAY WAY too comfortable. They need to learn to fight...starting day 1 for their job...and throughout the year. They need that dog mentality...nothing promised everything earn. I want some dogs back at IU!! Which reminds me of my favorite YOUTUBE coach.....

I have no issues with adding Kopp, but shooting isn't everything in this situation - Todd Leary could shoot but there were legit reasons why he didn't play much. There are some concerns about what else Kopp brings to the table, and he gets to the line less than 3x/game on a team where he was a primary scorer so, while it's great that he shoots a high percentage when he gets there, he just doesn't get there that frequently.

I do like having the option of him combined with JH - they have different skill sets and abilities that will allow us to match up with different lineups, or to create match up problems for opponents.

Agreed....this is a complementary piece. He isn't here to lead the team in scoring. He is here to be "part" of the team...not carry it. Even if he ends up a specialist...we need his expertise. He gives us what we HOPE Leal will...but with more size and versatility. No doubt he will have to rebound and defend better if he expects to stay on the floor...but what I am trying to emphasize is this kid is here to play a role....and I think he fits it very well. We don't need another ball handler because we are loaded back there. We needed a kid that can come in and stretch the floor and hit jumpers. He has proven he can do that. I don't think anyone really expected us to bring in the next Kevin Love from the portal...at this point we are making tweeks...minor upgrades and filling in the holes in the roster...not wholesale changes...we've made those moves with Johnson and Bates adding to what Parker is set to bring us as well.

Ha ha no doubt!! All I kept thinking was how bad must Coastal Carolina pay their football coach if he lives on a street overrun by like 20 cats and he can't even afford to fix his screen door lol!!! but a lot of truth in that presser...and that was 10 years ago...it's even worse today with the way kids come in attitude wise.

How many times I've wished that we had a player like one of the Ahrens brothers (both 6'6") at MSU and OSU. Role player wings who can come in and sink a couple dagger threes.

Me too...I always thought that might be Anthony Leal as an upperclassman...

Oh...and another favorite of mine that is even more relevant given the recent events in Indy with the girls AAU game....

I could do press conferences all day long. Geno Auriemma's one about that they don't teach effort and hustle at UCONN is FANTASTIC.

I'm pretty "meh" on the Kopp commitment but I can't believe that Kopp vs Hunter is even a debate. From what they've shown so far in their careers I'd take Kopp over Hunter all day, every day.

Hunter just hasn't lived up to his HS ranking. It could be that after the injury he never will. Or it could be that it's just taking a long time and/or development under the previous coaching regime was poor. So he could improve vastly with time and the coaching change or not.

But right now, I'd take Kopp over him for sure.

Let's let Coach Woody do his thing....we may just get all 3. We may have landed an assassin and maybe we will develop one too. 🤞

Oh yeah...another good one!! Yeah I won't post anymore...we should probably start a thread for those though lol! I just thought because of that fight at the girls AAU tournament over the weekend I would post Martin. Sad what is becoming of the country.

Kopp will be our third leading scorer...

He very well could be - a lot of our fans are so off base on this it's amazing.

He led a Big Ten team in minutes played for a reason. He was shooting close to 50/40/90 through the end of January and then just went into a terrible slump.

Not only that, but I know Kopp’s decision making will be better and the mental lapses on D will not happen as often.

Yah, lets just not count 9 out of 20 games within the B1G.

That's not what I'm saying at all, but let's not throw away a career of data because of 9 games that seem like an outlier for his career. For his entire career, sans those 9 games, he is a .395% three point shooter on 3.8 attempts per game.

EDIT: Also, I see the confused react you gave to literal facts that he lead his team in minutes last year and was shooting close to 50/40/90 through the end of January. I'm assuming the confused react is because the numbers don't fit your narrative about him. The kid is a flat out shooter.

I'm excited about Kopp after watching that video.  He seems to have massive heart, work ethic and toughness.  He seems to get IT.  If he wants to be on the court, he has to outwork everyone else.  He has to go through the process to achieve his goal.

This team the past few years seems to have lacked that heart and toughness for the most part.  Players seemed like they felt entitled to minutes and to playing.  I'm not sure they respected the process like Kopp seems to.  I think his attitude and work ethic will drive the others on the team to meet his drive or they won't play.

He talks and sounds like a kid who played for Coach Knight.  I believe that is what Coach Woodson is looking for.  Maybe he isn't the most athletic guy on the team, but he is going to work so hard that you can't not play him.  And he will understand if he gets benched why it happened and he won't complaint.  That desire to not be there again on the bench will drive him to work even harder so that he can be in the game.  Very excited to have that kind of player on this team, the kind that leads by example and works his @ss off.

Hey.  I report, you decide.  LOL

I have no clue what it is using to make those determinations but hard for me to believe Race will be our 2nd leading scorer. Most of the numbers would likely be based on last years performances....on last years teams...when half the kids are playing on a new team and EVERYONE is playing for a new coach and in a new offense.

Plus I guess Geronimo and Leal and Duncomb are red shirting lol. I also think its pretty weird we will avg exactly the same amount of points per game as a team as last year according to this too. lol Count me out!

No i just like your ... he played the most minutes argument lol. Tom Pritchard played the most minutes in 08-09 season.

Without going back through this thread, i have a hunch not 1 single person said Kopp wasnt a good shooter.

You are trying to erase half of the B1G season for Kopp to fit your narrative. I am sure there are A LOT of players i can erase 1/2 the B1G season and make them godsends.

Again I do not believe ANYONE has said they are against this. I think for those who are not creaming their pants about it just think that their could have potentially been someone better. Who knows. I dont. Initial gut reaction was... this ....okaaaaay. Not a jump up and down screaming excitement.
