  1. One more thought: If you’re still one of those who hates on Deron Davis, it’s probably time to stop.

  2. Random thoughts after watching the game. - NW is better than we thought, though a little limited in that they have no point guard. - IU, while still good, is not as good at the moment as we hoped. Injuries have absolutely impacted that, but some key guys need to step up and become consistent for this team to reach its potential. It’s early and there’s is certainly time for that to happen. - That was one of the worst officiated games I’ve seen. It’s insane for a team like IU to get hosed that like at home I don’t care what the final foul numbers and free throw totals were, the refs certainly helped keep NW in that game. - This team desperately needs Justin Smith and Devonte Green to play better and more consistent. We really need a 3rd consistent scorer - We really need some shooters too. There’s an idea that maybe TJD can convince Isiah Steward to join the 2019 class, and while I’d never turn down another 5* big, I’m much more concerned about shooting and guard play for next season, especially if Langford leaves. - I’m a big Phinisee fan, think he has a great future, but like many said heading into the season, Devonte Green was going to be a big indicator of how the season goes, and this team could really use him stepping up and seizing the pg role. This team needs some scoring and consistency out of that spot. - Loved seeing Langford step up down the stretch, and as others have said, when Morgan went out it was like a switch went off for him. We need him to be that aggressive all the time. - Again, if Smith and Green can step up and be consistent, then the sky is the limit, if not we’re probably a middle of the pack Big Ten team squeezing into March as a 7-9 seed. - On Davis. I’m so happy to see him playing well. I’ve consistently said he’s a great kid and in the offseason social media you could see he loves IU. With that said, we weren’t “hating on him” during the offseason, it’s just that basketball has changed. Plodding centers aren’t the norm anymore and are much more easily exposed. There is definitely a role for him on this team, and I will absolutely admit and am happy that he’s playing much, much better than I thought. It’s great for him and it’s great for the team. Rambling done...

  3. Anyone notice Jerome Hunter coming off the bench to congratulate Romeo at the buzzer? He was not limping. No boot, either

  4. Not saying it will happen. But as of tonight, discussion is....don't be surprised if you see Juwan wearing a shin guard protection against PSU. Purely precautionary. Sunday, may bring a different result. However for now.... nothing to be concerned with.

  6. This may not be directly related to TJD. Romeo Langford is incredible. How many other one and dones are attending HS games the night before a game?! He’s not likely to be here when TJD puts on the Indiana uniform, yet that doesn’t keep him from supporting a fellow Hoosier and friend. Class act and incredible ball player—so happy he chose to spend his one year with us!

  8. Wow. Don't think this is the way to go about getting these guys to post. This approach is as smooth as sandpaper.

  9. This is a better Northwestern team than many expected...can’t look past a team like this. We started to find pacing more as the game went on...but, we are still playing too fast. We need offensive rhythm more than anything else. Our three point shooting, rushed. Our play development and movement away from the basketball has no continuity or relationship to the movement of the ball. With the guys coming back from injuries, we need to continue to improve...get accustomed to playing in real time with one another. It’s gonna be a good, fun season...we just need to try to be patient and watch the guys get better with reps.

  11. My takes..... Collins is a helluva coach. Northwestern is pretty damn good. Smith needs to watch from the pine for awhile. We can't guard the post. Romeo is a STUD. All I got.

  12. Penn State is rated #39 on kenpom. I haven't seen them play this year but that doesn't look like a bottom feeder to me

  13. Big difference between a shooter, and a guy who can shoot. We have a bunch of guys who can shoot, but only one shooter - Fitzner. (maybe Anderson too, but I don't think the rest of his game is ready to contribute) Considering our two best players are a post player and an elite slasher, I'd say floor spacing is of the utmost importance on this year's team. Offensively I think we are better team with Fitzner in there instead of Smith. I don't blame Archie for having the team low in 3PA given the rosters he's had at IU so far. But I do hope his teams in the future start taking and making more threes.

  14. I agree. Did you see Archie's postgame? He said he should have used De'Ron more in the 2nd half. We need De'Ron to battle the Nick Wards and Kaleb Wessons of the B10. I thought he played pretty well yesterday.

  17. The Movement (Yogi) in 4 years won 2 Conference Titles and 2 Sweet 16's which is equal to what Painter has done in 13 seasons at PU?

  18. This, I think, is going to be the diverging point of conversation about this year’s team. I think most would say they expected this team to compete for the conference championship because of Romeo. I have to admit I am among them. But, taken in with last year, this year is going to be a clear improvement over last year. And, when you take it in stride with last year, it’s much more palatable. The question is how patient people are going to be. Perhaps we need to stop viewing the team in a prism of conference champion of our own making and just appreciate the improvement of their ride. That will do me well, this season, for sure.

  19. If they don’t choke down the stretch as is historically their pattern, NW will be a tournament team. They were much better than advertised. There are things that are disappointing so far about this team, but can anybody make a valid, non-emotional argument that they are not vastly improved? There will be more bumps along the way, but look at what we are becoming. My biggest concern, and there is not much Archie can do, is having 1 healthy BIG body. DD is already wearing out, he is injury prone and has bad legs. To me, the Achilles heel, ( pun intended) of this team is guarding a big. Big bodies give Juwan trouble. Big, agile bodies give DD trouble. Fitzner cannot guard a 5. Archie and staff have done, in my opinion, the best job they can to over compensate for the problem, except I do agree with those who suggested we play some zone vs Duke. We still have a Roster management problem, and that was why most of us had issues with FCTC. As the great Mike Davis said, help is on the way. We are getting better, we will make a run later in the season, AND, it won’t be a complete shock to see Romeo stay one more. Relax, enjoy the process. We could very well be next year’s Duke. With mostly Indiana kids. I’m still pumped.

  20. We got off topic in the Brooks thread, so thought I would post this here: Looking at the numbers, it appears that Archie’s offensive philosophy is to shoot a relatively high 3P% on limited attempts. Here are his teams’ national 3P% and 3PA rankings going back to his time at Dayton: 11-12: 171st 3P% / 25th 3PA 12-13: 20th 3P% / 303rd 3PA 13-14: 54th 3P% / 104th 3PA 14-15: 116th 3P% / 78th 3PA 15-16: 182nd 3P% / 202nd 3PA 16-17: 38th 3P% / 193rd 3PA 17-18: 292nd 3P% / 310th 3PA 18-19: 117th 3P% / 290th 3PA His teams have only been in the top 100 for threes attempted twice, and one of those years was his first year at Dayton. From what I can tell, Archie runs a pretty regimented offense that’s focused more on scoring inside than out. His teams have also generally struggled at the free throw line (haven’t cracked the top 200 in FT% for the past five consecutive seasons). Thoughts? @StLHoosier

  24. I didn’t read his post as being offensive towards the insiders, but giving into those that are giving the insiders a hard time and not posting what they know. Also, he is saying that if the insiders quit posting on here, he will not waste his time checking on this board. If the insiders don’t post, most of the theeads are derailed from the original topic any ways.

  25. It’s called shooting woes, and it’s nothing the team or coaching staff is doing to cause it. Fitzner is a good shooter, and if you can’t tell that from his career statistics, I’m not sure what to tell you. To say “something we are doing has to change” is regards to a guy missing some shots is asanine imo.

  26. And yet, there is a team that has gone undefeated two years running and won’t have a chance to show whether they deserve to be in the playoffs. I detest the college football playoff system as it stands. Let at least 8 teams in and prove it on the field

  27. A disclaimer for anyone even thinking about giving Victor’s music a listen.....Don’t. Filthy filthy lyrics, and just a huge disappointment.( I was just wanting to hear what he sounded like) I don’t think I would have listened as a teenager. I was hoping for a Boyz to Men vibe... sounds more like something for Jerry Springer..Not something for a Sunday listen, either, lol. Love the kid, and he’s one of my all time favs. But the lyrics on the very first song were so bad... and just nasty.... I was not expecting. All I could do was laugh.

  29. My takeaways.... -Northwestern is a solid, well-coached team -FT shooting HAS to get better -Concerned this team is going to struggle all year from 3, which is going to make it tough to go deep in the tourney. -We have to get more out of Smith or we’re going to get abused in the post like we did today regularly. Unfortunately he’s lost in all aspects right now. -Proud of how this team found a way at the end without Morgan, especially Romeo. Kid is smooth, just needs to be stronger with the ball. -Continue to play hard on D, but we have to lock in 100% of the time, not just 75% of the time. -Not confident we’ll go to PSU on Tues and win.

  32. Amazing that they never discuss the $EC playing one less conference game. Let's assume Alabama plays Georgia on the road instead of the Citadel prior to the Iron Bowl. Any chance they lose one of those two games, as opposed to having a warmup scrimmage prior to their rivalry game?

  33. IU 1&0 in Big Ten while the pee yew smellermakers get clobbered by 19 points , start Big Ten play 0&1 after. losing their Second game in a row !! Gotta love it ! ?Hoping J Morgen' s injury is not too serious !!!!!!! PS . Come on Hoosoer nation. ! Northwestern was 6&1. After beating Virginia Tech (the team that beat the smellermakers 89 to 83!!!) The Wildcats have one of the B10's best players in Pardon ! A good win for the mash unit Hoosiers !!

  34. Congratulations! I have 3 grown children, and let me tell you, you're entering the most difficult yet most rewarding job of your life. Is this your first? I'll tell you what my Dad told me when my first was born..."You spend the first two years teaching them to walk and talk, and the next 16 telling them to shut up and sit down." 😁

  35. Hate to sound like a broken record... We started two kids who just played their first B1G game. Doesn’t matter who the preseason competition has been, the intensity of conference play is a step or three up for them. Rob and Romeo got their first taste of what they signed up for when they committed to IU. For that matter, we started two sophomores as well— kids with some experience but certainly not a ton. My point being, Northwestern started a pretty mature team. Seniors and grad transfers. Experience, especially this early in the season, makes a big difference. We survived. Young kids got a great learning experience. Hopefully, Morgan’s injury is not serious and hopefully we learn and improve because of this game

  37. I’m not sure he will make it through the end of the game before someone makes him an offer. I thought they would get blown out in this game, but if you look at his record there, he might be one of the best in college football. I would take him over the Purdue coach if I had a big time program in need.

  43. It’s clear as day. Romeo has to touch the ball at least once per possession. I’m still of the mindset he should be the #1 option every possession

  44. Northwestern has a legit squad. There will be no easy wins, either home or away this year, and with all of the injuries, I'm happy to take this W, ugly as it was. Some fans might think that this shouldn't have been this close, but this is the B1G. Any team can win anywhere on any given day. It's chaos season and this is why we love the game. Romeo did exactly what he was recruited for today, and that makes me pretty dang happy.

  48. No it's really sad. It's because of the critics you guys are not getting as much "intel" as before, or as much as you deserve. I have never considered myself an insider, yet I continue to get "intel" from some of our best insiders. In fact, I heard just a day ago from one of our greatest insiders, who had some very nice words to share with me. Maybe, just maybe.... the critics are gone for good. And our real insiders, will be willing to share as before. ________________________________ Lastly. Thank you Archie. For living up to your promise to lock down the state of Indiana. Promises made. Promises kept.

  49. Thank you for saying that. I did mention that he’s foreign, but I was cryptic. I’m certainly not anti-foreigner. I made reference to it only in the context that he is clueless of how the puzzle fits together. Now that you mention it, I regret that I said it, but please understand that I only meant it in the sense that he may not understand how the vitality of football and basketball are important since he did not grow up immersed in it. A university president can ensure that academics are at the forefront and develop a lead role in exciting new technologies and disciplines such as informatics. But, at the same time, you can ensure the sports programs excel, which by extension keeps alumni engaged (i.e., $$$), and brings visibility to the school, which can in turn attract talent, whether it be students, faculty, or administration. Peer institutions of IU’s can figure out how to do all of this simultaneously. Do a complete job, that’s why I referenced walking and chewing gum at the same time.
