  1. I’m done trying to figure it out. I’m sure there will be rumors about this being a massive cover up, and I wish it was but I just want to know what went wrong in the last minutes.

  2. Well I guess time to let my petty side come out that is a silver lining in all of this.... The Celtics lost to the Kings. Let me repeat the Kings by 11 and all the Celtics boards are asking IU to raise the price to get Stevens off their hands. Also Purdue lost to North Texas by 9 I believe. So silver lining about the gut punch tonight. Also thank you 0708 for all the insider info even if it turned out to be like an 18 year old that choose a different school than IU at the last minute. I will always support people willing to go out on a limb to help us IU junkies out cause I will say I am a nobody from New Castle Indiana that just loves IU basketball since I was a young kid inspired by my dad that was there during the glory days. So I appreciate any information I can get to satiate my thirst for IU basketball and over the past couple decades I have been super thirsty for something good to happen.

  3. Reason #12374 why I never want to hear anyone, especially a fellow IU fan, dog our fan base as being particularly awful ever again.

  4. Really, until someone raises the mic at the IU press conference, everyone is still on the table. In my opinion. How is this different than a corporate CEO situation? I’m saying this for a third time now, I believe the plan is unknown to everyone but those directly involved and that the CEO replacement is already in place. I could be wrong but I’m going to say it’s all timing and smoke.

  6. Here is what happened all the BS to IU stuff the last few days was an intentional leaf from the IU side to get all our fans excited to get people talking about Indiana during the tournament but it was all a big smokescreen to allow BS to come out and say he is Celtic loves Boston even a Patriot fan all just to get the Boston fans to be reassured all is well and to further tick off those that want him out. The IU fan base is deflated got our hopes up again and all of it was the master plan for him to give the middle finger to Boston and say I am a HOOSIER. All of this is the fictional ending to my screen play. Dreamed this last night, been thinking too much about the coaching search I guess

  7. I think it would be good for all of us if the Mods just locked this thread. The thread title alludes to something that is obviously not going to happen. And, having it open just gives us a venue to drown our sorrows. Taking away the temptation is the most effective way to recovery.

  8. Until he's not. People thought the same thing about Cal. Give a guy the right college coaching gig and he may hang around.

  9. WE did not dodge a bullet, he'd have been a great hire. He's a great dude, he made a comment that was a bit silly and rubs people in Indiana the wrong way. I'd hope we aren't going to throw out his 15 years in public life where he has been nothing but stellar because of one comment that wasn't even really that bad.

  10. I wasn’t “jacked.” Just taking it all in. Was hoping for a solid hire. It didn’t see anyone who had a “wow” factor. If no talk of stevens had come up, I would’ve probably seen a hire and sold myself as I did with Archie, and got a new shirt and said “let’s give it a whirl and be optimistic.” I don’t doubt any of the insiders were accurate in what they were hearing, it’s just an problem with it is that it lets all the air out of the balloon. Steven’s was the only grand slam hire. I think there are some triples and doubles remaining. But they’re not worth raising a flag in WI over. 😂 Hire Beard? Cool! That’s great! I’m pleased I’m not taking my shirt off and painting my chest with and IU. If we end up with Alford I crap in a brown bag and light it on my own porch.

  12. I'm not going to lie, I got sucked in over the last day or so, but that was always the one holdup for me. I couldn't imagine Stevens leaving the NBA for college. Why would you want to deal with boosters, donors, AAU coaches, recruiting 16-18 year olds and dealing with their people, worrying about college kids not getting grades, etc., etc. The NBA is just easier. I dont mean the actual coaching and game, but you don't have all that other nonsense. I just see Stevens as an NBA coach at this point, and that was always in the back of my mind.

  13. I'm 99.999999% sure the Celtics would have to formally announce it.

  14. I know we're all very disappointed that we didn't get Stevens. Any other coach seems like a let down. Bummer. But look at it this way: We almost hired away the successful head coach of one of the 2 or 3 most iconic pro teams in all of U.S. history. Yeah I know "close" only counts with hand grenades, atom bombs, etc. But Dolson and IU almost did something that pretty much all of the fan base, NBA insiders, media, etc. thought was impossible. If Stevens would have went to IU, that would be an all-time shocker. Combined with Dolson's handling of Archie's firing I'm real sure we have the right guy in the AD position (or VP of whatever). So the saga continues.

  15. @mrflynn03Not going to quote you because I hope you reconsider what you said above and edit your post. It's my opinion that it's those types of posts that sometimes cause people (coaching candidates included) to look at the IU fan base a little sideways.

  17. IU job aside... The raise rumors are strange to me. I find it hard to believe the Celtics are giving him a raise with a losing record. The ‘mass hole’ comment was the weirdest of weird. I’m a Celtics fan. Not as die hard as I am for IU but some of his comments were off putting. The whole ordeal is just strange. I’m still sure IU has its man. Someone was on the hook for this process to take place. I’m just hoping it’s someone that can get it done and not another epic failure. I was certain a guy like Beard could succeed here. Now, I’m not sure anyone will. I don’t think there is anyone that can come in and excite the fan base anywhere close to the same level as we’ve seen the last 48hrs or so. A less desirable name will be forgotten over the summer and when November rolls around, the first couple of losses are going to cause fans to question their fandom. That’s where a big name and proven coach would sell to recruits and fans alike creating hype to sustain a pair of back to back losses without already seeing pitch forks. After some thought, the only way I think IU is going to get back on track without a guy named Stevens or Donovan is to bring in Pitino to win fast. It may be short lived but can possibly jump start the Brand and point it back in the right direction. I can’t think of another coach with that capability. I can’t see any justification in the buyout $ and locker room uncertainty by bringing in Dane Fife or similar. I love Calbert and all that he’s been able to do but in my opinion, it’s too late to go that route. IU’s brand isn’t going to carry over much further unless the fans stay with it. The older generations see the brand differently than the younger folks. Similar to what Sage Steel tweeted a few days ago, got to get it right this time.

  18. Asked the owner of @celticsforum if he’s heard anything about Brad getting a big raise today and he said “Nope. Nothing”. Just FYI guys.

  20. More examples of how our fanbase is such a negative selling point for coaches. We need to take a lesson from historic programs like the Celtics. 🤨🙄

  21. Tom Allen has won me over so far because he is winning. Bill Lynch was a nice guy but he wasn't winning. All the LEO and enthusiasm is great, but to me that is secondary to winning. There are different personalities that can win, I am with Badgervol on all of that extraneous stuff anymore. I don't care who we bring in anymore as long as they end up being a winner.

  22. Wonder why this thread has stayed open— and yes, I realize I am contributing. Woke up this morning and nothing in my life changed. Sorry for y’all who got emotionally invested in the BS saga. Bottom line is that a guy who has no ties to IU other than once saying it was his dream job, turned us down. Lots of folks say one thing, and at the time they may truly believe it. People change. Circumstances change. If Stevens doesn’t want to coach IU now, more power to him. Thanks for listening, if he did, and time to move on. Hopefully, Dolson finds a guy whose heart bleeds cream and crimson. CTA has won over the football fan base because his love for his players, and IU is obvious and contagious. Certainly there is a basketball version of him just waiting to be asked to lead the program

  25. I get what you’re saying...and you’re right...but sorry I’m just being honest...as an IU fan surviving the past 20 years, I do NOT need another coach I need to “get on board with” or “have a good attitude about,” or “give them a chance,” or “this isn’t a bad hire,” need one I’m just plain jacked we got. but get the feeling it’s the same ole same ole. Silver lining...probably not going to have to worry about getting my priorities out of wake by being too emotionally invested in IU basketball.

  26. First and foremost I’m very grateful HSN is up and running, thanks for all the hard work! That being said, Stevens would have been epic, but just about any on the list we’ve been seeing is an upgrade over what Coach Miller have us the last 4 years. Keep your heart people, we may just rise from the ashes yet.

  28. This is exactly how I feel. This morning I was caught up in it so much I was an idiot and got on Amazon and told my wife “I need to update my IU attire!” I ordered several new pieces of clothing and a fresh clean IU flag to fly out of my house. After I got this news I canceled orders totaling $220. if I’m pleasantly jacked about whoever we end up with maybe I’ll go back and order a couple things. But I’ve got enough IU gear to support a mediocre program.

  29. It was more than 2 guys on a message board. Come on. This very obviously had some legs on the Indiana side. This was not a Donovan situation that never got further than fantasyland.

  30. I think Stevens was interested enough to give it a listen, and probably talked it over with his family. In the end, he made the choice that he thought was best for him. It's all that you can ask of a man.

  31. Maybe IU dodged a bullet. I mean Stevens can’t beat the Cavs or Kings these days!

  33. The only really specific thing about a new coach that Dolson has said is that he wants someone who will run a "cutting edge" offense. One that fans and players would like. The rest of his statement indicated he was talking about NBA offense. That would tell me that Musselman much more likely than Beard.
    3 points
  34. Regarding Musselman, the link below is a good read on his offense. Honestly, it sounds like what I like. Big emphasis on passing. That is huge for me. I always prefer moving the ball with the pass over dribbling. He emphasizes pace, but unlike Crean, he’s about doing so without committing many turnovers. If he can recruit at a high level, he might be a great match here. He’s got an NBA background and he’s got an attractive style of play so that might play well with recruits. I think you could get him. As the son of a coach, he “gets” Indiana basketball as he’s made clear in the past. https://www.arkansasfight.com/2019/4/7/18299368/what-eric-musselman-is-bringing-to-fayetteville

  35. Look at it this way. Two weeks ago, every single person here thought Stevens was a longshot. So, it didn’t happen. Now, we can pivot to a number of options that we were still touting on here. Musselman and Beard are two I’m intrigued by. Oats is out because of the buyout.

  39. For those interested, here’s an article on Beard’s defense. https://www.theringer.com/march-madness/2019/4/3/18293467/chris-beard-texas-tech-jarrett-culver-final-four-defense I really think Musselman and Beard are very intriguing names. We don’t know how high they are on Dolson’s list but we should know fairly soon. I will say both have recruited transfers well. What I like is they aren’t willing to sacrifice whole seasons. Whether they can use the Indiana brand and ratchet up the recruiting is a question. But we are talking about two highly competent coaches.

  40. This is probably the closest thing to the truth. I doubt he wants to deal with all the college baggage. At the end of the day we may never know if he seriously considered it but there did seem to be some real belief from the IU side.

  41. I can't think of a good reason why Musselman would turn us down.

  42. Brad's only 44. He figures he'll get five more chances to coach at IU.
