Hi, newby to posting who's been enjoying the site for several years.  I wanted to mention for the folks in the Southern part of the state - New Albany plays Centerville, OH and IU commit Gabe Cupps this Thursday in New Albany's gym at 6:00 for JV and 7:45ish for Varsity (Eastern times).  I thought some living near might want to see him play.  New Albany is 7-1, but not as good as that record would indicate.  I'm expecting a Centerville win.  I'm a 1980 NAHS grad (we had a really good team that year - undefeated until a loss in the state final game to Broad Ripple).

I forgot IU recruit Jonathan Powell also plays for Centerville.  Rabjohns says IU personnel should be at the game, possibly Coach Woodson.

Recruit watching: Gabe Cupps, Jonathan Powell, Dylan Harper, Rakease Passmore, Tyran Stokes and more (247sports.com)

  2. "Do you remember the 1973 champs with Julius Norman and Herman "The Helicopter"?

I remember the semi-final vs Franklin. I knew a few of the Franklin players... New Albany won in OT, then beat South Bend Adams (and one of the best players in the state in Jimmy Webb)... Great Final 4 that year... "

Yes, I was in elementary school, but remember the 1973 team.  Julius Norman, Norman Mukes, Bill Finley, Dale Slaughter, and the big guy Charlie Mitchell I believe were the starters.  Coming up on the 50-year anniversary.  Hopefully they will have a reunion.  I know Norman Mukes has passed. Thanks for sharing.

  3. Thanks for sharing!  I was there to witness that shot.  In the first semi-final New Albany beat Andrean and Dan Dakich in another nail-biter.  Stacey Toran was quite an athlete and played in the NFL for the Raiders.  He was killed at 27 in a car accident.  Broad Ripple also had a pesky little point guard named King Duke.  New Albany was favored to win the Championship.  It just wasn't meant to be.  For anyone interested, here's a good read on that tournament and what Indiana high school basketball meant to the town.
