With Sparks leaving I'm assuming that Woodson is now going to focus on playing a more modern style of basketball and Sparks wasn't in the plans for that. The issue is now we have no backup for Malik which I feel Sparks would have done well at.

Given that the staff said they would be looking for a rim protector in the portal, and Woodson recently doubled down on his belief that college BB is still played “from the inside out” I’m not expecting substantial or dramatic changes in the offense for the 2024-25 season.

So we probably need to come to grips with this. He's either turning it around or getting canned next year. That's on him, the staff, and the administration. I am sure everyone involved knows this. Will we reach Louisville and Michigan levels? I don't know, but either way those jobs are going to get interest from good coaches and IU's will too. Personally I would give T.J. Otzelberger the first call. He turned around a program that went 2–22 0–18, and uses the portal very effectively. He seems like the kind of guy that would thrive at IU. But I think they'll be a lot good candidates both young and old. I know Dolson is in the crosshairs (as he should be) but he hired a guy like Cig after Allen, so I think we'll see a similar about-face when the time comes.

IIRC Otz current contract runs through 2029 and his buyout next spring will be around $15 million

There are people that believe Woodson and Buckner plan on riding off into retirement together after next year and his approach to recruiting by living a dying with the portal tends to go along with that possibility.

fwiw I believe QB turns 70 this year and his term as BOT Chair expires on June 30 of 2025. If nothing else, in the event next season goes off the rails then perhaps he could recuse himself from the next coaching search (if there would actually be one).

well, and I don't disagree, just don't front yourself a "big IU guy" if you were to do that.

Not really saying he, himself, is doing that, but lord we have IU brethren that are... went as far as to say he has an "IU clause" in his contract? That doesn't seem very "IU" of him to take those jobs.

I would laugh at him for taking the UL job, though.

I think May possibly has an “IU clause” in his FAU contract, but I’d be surprised if UL or OSU would give him one.

And if May took either of those jobs and succeeded, I seriously doubt he would subsequently leave for IU then. At that point imo it would be too late, similarly to the situation with Brad.

It’s true that there’s no guarantee of success with hiring May, but that might be true of any candidate IU could hire next time around (likely 2025 at the earliest). It’s not clear to me that IU’s next search will have any “proven” or “sure-fire” candidates available to include in it.
