Realistically, the standards have dropped such that if Mike gets us into the tournament as any seed, under any circumstances he will not be fired.
A round of 64 loss and going 22-10 is a successful season now. And especially when the coach is a donor favorite. It’s just not going to happen.

First thing's first, congrats to the IU women on the 4-seed and hosting opportunity. Tough draw, but they call it madness for a reason. Secondly, love you guys and this community, but goodness you're not shy about using the private message feature. Sorry for ghosting many of you but easier to just post publicly.
And, now that I've effectively buried the lead, Woodson is back next year with a couple caveats and interesting details:
- Meeting Tuesday happened as scheduled and talk was future of the basketball program and specifically how Woody fits in that plan
- Though Dolson and BoT disagree about it happening now, consensus was that this isn't the bridge hire they'd hoped for and this is his last year barring some miracle B1G championship or FF run next year that would make for bad optics.
- Woodson was given the opportunity to retire and go out amicably but said no and that he thinks he can use the portal to put us in a better position to transition to another coach after next year.
- Dolson laid out expectations for portal results and win/loss results next season that would result in letting Woody go; just my opinion but it sounds like Buckner, boosters, etc. got him the 4th year but Scotty Dolson has his finger on the eject button and Woodson knows it. Fully expect him to announce a "planned retirement" next year so he can go out on his "own terms"
- For what it's worth, Dolson did put out feelers and got positive feedback on interest from 2 of his top 3 potential replacement candidates; think we can get May with a text message, Pearl has serious interest but wouldn't make a move if his team makes a FF run or wins a natty.
- I think we as a fanbase/board are higher on Dusty than the administration/BoT; sounds like they're only interested in a homerun hire, win now guy if they do move and risking a third straight miss isn't something they're willing to do and just because he has IU ties and made a good tourney run, feeling is May isn't a guarantee at this level.
That's what I've got that I'm able to share comfortably right now. Not what myself or anybody on this board probably wants to hear. Moral is one more year is 95% likely (everyone root for UCONN in the S16, and a miracle!) It's kind of messy internally and they're trying to move on to get IU back to a top tier program while letting Woodson ride into the sunset having left the program in a good place and "stepping aside" for the good of the program. ??

Yes. My point was more that I think the notion of Woodson departing after this year is fantasy. Osterman gets his info from Dolson, or someone close to him. Our only hope is Mike reading the tea leaves and stepping down.
Which, I actually generally like Osterman. Good beat writers aren't normally fans of the team they cover. It helps them be unbiased, in theory.

Osterman clearly had that pre-written, talking about recruiting and pivoting to next year. Mike is coming back folks.

I’m perfectly fine with what the players said last night. Honestly, it’d be damning for Woodson if they didn’t. And I understand their perspective. They are the ones putting in the literal blood, sweat, and tears.
But I reject the “true fan” garbage from Woodson. That’s like my kid saying “if you loved me you wouldn’t discipline me”. No, it’s because I love you that I do discipline you. If I didn’t love you, I wouldn’t.
Same thing goes for fans and the program. If we weren’t “true fans” and didn’t love IUBB, we wouldn’t mind watching it be mismanaged and would just stay quiet. The notion that fandom require silence or support in the face utter mismanagement and poor results is ridiculous.

XJ plays like absolute trash the first half and how does Woodson reward him? Starts the 2nd half. He’s been a complete negative on the game.

And that is why they are serious programs and we are not.

Not surprised.
Wanted it to be true I just never believed that the administration would have the stomach for letting him go after making the tournament his first two years when Archie got four years and never made it.

I just wish Mike would step down for his own legacy.

Well if we have to keep him, we might as well win the next two and then all of the BTT. Only hope is Purdue is caught looking ahead and loses before we play them.

As much as I want it to be true, no way Dolson actually has the guts to can Woodson after 1 bad year. I’d argue it’s obviously still warranted based on the performance this year and middling success with 2 NBA players last year and the bevy of recurring problems. We clearly are directionless, it’s time, but I just can’t see Dolson doing it. Hope to be wrong.

I didn’t even know there was a game today until a friend texted. Even under Archie that was never the case until the bitter end.
Email Dolson. It’s time to move on.

Wandered around assembly hall after the game. Probably 45 minutes after the buzzer Ware was shooting free throws in Cook Hall.

Woodson is a nice guy. And he’s IU royalty. But it is absolutely undeniable that he rode TJD’s coattails his first two seasons.
We have all the bad parts of having an NBA coach-no discipline, rotations, etc. with none of the good parts-high level offense, shooting, etc. It’s a joke. If we’re a serious program Woodson is asked to retire at the end of the year. If he won’t accept, fire him.

Earlier this season I half jokingly told my friend that I’d offer painter $8 million a year and then go up by 2 every time he says no. Now I mean it whole heartedly.
I know the March success is lacking, but it’s just a matter of time before they break through to the Final 4.

Huge win.
As has been stated, defensive rotations are much, much improved. Offensively We know what we do well and stay inside of ourselves, which will actually take a team really far.
Would love to see us start to run some sets for Gunn. If he can become a consistent 3 point threat, which I think he is obviously capable of, it’ll really help our offense. We’re never gonna be shooting 20 threes a game, but we need to be a threat.
Galloway seems like he’s aiming right now instead of just shooting. I think he’ll be okay, but a rough game for him offensively overall.

This is exactly what we should want out of coach. Coach Wilson had this edge to him, but wasn’t affable enough to sell it to the masses(though it’s clear to me that he raised the bar at IU, regardless of his record).
I love it. I love the confidence. IU will never be anything other than a doormat with any other attitude than this! Let’s go!!!

I mean realistically this was Tom Allen. Had he been successful I think he’d have been our guy for the next 15 years, just didn’t work out.

My somewhat realistic hope? Big Ten Champs, E8 or better.
My pessimistic guess? 5th in B1G, lose in second round as a 6 seed. Woody gets extended.
