Ok....for sure I want to go after them. I want Archie recruiting him. I don’t want him to not have a back up plan but I want in on him.

Now Do you understand that you or I make ZERO difference in this recruitment. Whether we think we can get him or not will not change a thing? I expect us to fail...and that won’t be the reason if we do. I expected us to get Trey and we failed. What we are saying is don’t get your hopes up on this one...while it can happen this is not a Bloomington South where we got Leal...or Indy where we got Trayce. This is Gary. It will be a monumental win...but betting odds would be very very long on it. So before we get people all worked up and turn this into a 200 page thread...let’s lower expectations. I might give Archie a hard time for losing a kid in our backyard that we went hard for...I’m not going to sweat him one bit losing out on this kid and hope people don’t either. Realistic expectations are just fine. Archie may shock us all but I won’t lose sleep if he can’t land the kid. That’s all.

My initial response wasn’t to you. It’s to the guy who doesn’t give us a shot and says he’s going to Purdue or Mich St definitively and the kid isn’t making a decision for another year. Lol

Of course Archie will give it a shot. I don’t get what you are saying because it makes no sense. Are you saying We think Archie shouldn’t recruit kids from say North Carolina or California...because no one has even hinted at that? Just saying we are cool on this recruit because of the percentages. We aren’t getting our hope up to high. Gary might as well be Lansing Michigan. I’m not going to worry about it too much because it’s a long shot. Like Caleb Love or Garcia etc. If we get him that would be awesome and quite an accomplishment but just because people are skeptical of landing a kid doesn’t mean we don’t want to go after him.

Let me try to explain it so you can understand ...

Archie landed Anderson and Phinisee from two spots recruits rarely are pulled within 4 months on the job. Add in Langford and Lander - he's proven he's got the recruiting chops esp for 5 stars. The "percentages"  don't carry the weight they once did. He's shown that right out of the gate.

My original response was to Hoosier Jax who said we should not recruit Washington.

If you expect to fail, you're going to fail.

    Does that make sense?

I don’t think it’s negative to expect to lose out on this recruit. It’s a very long shot. Like I said it might as well be an out of state recruit. It’s one thing for us to be all in and excited on Trey Kaufman who was in our backyard but it’s another for a kid from Gary. I mean I’m sure Rico will tell us how long it’s been since we landed one of those kids. If we temper expectations early maybe we don’t have to see the hysterics like we did over Kaufman. If we get him we will all be over the moon because it would be a huge get!

You’re not one of those “that’s the way we’ve always done it” guys are you? By your logic, Purdue should never expect to get Kaufman, Archie should never expect to get Phinisee. Coach said from the beginning his plan was to lock the borders. He’s a guy who does what he says and says what he means and the track record right now is pretty dam good. I’m definitely willing to give him a shot at it and not write off an in state 5 star recruit like some.

Edit: I’m not seeing the hysterics over Kaufman either. We didn’t get a top 50 guy. Life goes on

I might be wrong, but I don’t think so. If I remember correctly, he won’t even be 19 by next year’s draft. I think you have to be 19 AND one year removed from HS.

I don’t think he will but he actually could go pro in 2021. By rule, you must turn 19 at any point during the calendar year of the draft.

Excellent post, Billingsley.  I know you are dialed-in to the process really well.  I was tuned into the program pretty solidly at one point but have no information now.  But, between my prior connections and, having followed recruiting to the 1980's--pre-internet, I have a good understanding of the process and how it really works.  My take is that we see lots of pronouncements and they do not ring true from how things really work.  I don't know that there is a subject where people bat so poorly as it is with recruiting pronouncements at any point in the process, let alone 12-18 months from a decision.

The bottom line is that, until a decision is not made, it's not made yet.  It's that simple.  Promises and guarantees from some "player's classmate's, auntie's plumber who went to the same Church in the fifth grade with a guy who once talked to a player's dad at Kroger" isn't going to cut it.  That's how "conventional wisdom" builds and everyone is so off.  In reality, the kid doesn't know yet because a decision hasn't been made.

The other tell is when there is a guy who thinks he is well connected on every subject.  That's not real.  There are issues where you have varying degrees of knowledge, but nobody knows everything about everything.  That's not how it works.  Call B.S. on anybody who plays that card.

I personally don't like the use of the oversign.  I hate to see kids transfer, and hope that Archie would not push someone out like that/  With no logical NBA early entrants after the 19'-20' season, signing 5 for that class would cause me to worry about Jerome Hunter's status.

I don’t think he would over sign.  I think of it more of hearing of a transfer in the spring and tacking one more on to fill that void.

Eric Gordon got another $76 Million last night. No clue on career earnings but he has to be IU's all time earner so far, right? I'm sure Victor will surpass at some point....if he hasn't already. Kudos to Gordon.

If memory serves, I believe the numbers are $178M guaranteed $199M non-guaranteed according to Rabby

Thanks for the info on Franklin. I would say that would be a big stretch for him but I trust what you are saying in that he can buy a few minutes but I would be lying if I thought he could handle a college level full court trapping press or quickly get us in and out of plays but I will happily be wrong. Given that Archie has offered a long list of point guards I think he is also still looking for a true backup. It’s ok that Franklin has ability to help bring it up and facilitate...but I don’t think that will be his primary position.

As far as Lander...I think 2 years max...whether he should go pro after that I think we’ve seen plenty of kids go pro regardless if they need a year or two more. The elite athleticism is there...I think his vision and ball handling are solid...I think he has that something special that will translate...the way he breaks down defenses and delivers the ball right into the shooters pocket ready to shoot...kinda like Ja Morant does...I like him and I think NBA scouts will too.

Did you get to catch some Cathedral games or have you seen him live?  I’ve seen highlight reels of him scoring, but that didn’t give a real clear picture of his capabilities.  Intriguing to hear about that potential.

For sure, he has to keep recruiting.  But getting strung along by our top targets while we toss out a bunch of offers to “diamonds in the rough” seems like a movie we’ve seen before.

Our top targets have said they’d ideally like to have a decision made before their season kicks off.  Today is July 20th.  Nobody is stringing anybody along here.
